Natural Hazards In Mississippi: Regional Perceptions And Reality, Patrick Lee Threatt Dec 2007

Natural Hazards In Mississippi: Regional Perceptions And Reality, Patrick Lee Threatt

Theses and Dissertations

This study comprised of a survey of 807 students in geosciences classes at Mississippi State University to determine the perceived level of threat from eight natural hazards: hurricanes, hail, lightning, tornadoes, earthquakes, ice storms, floods, and wildfires. Responses were analyzed to detect spatial differences in perceptions of threats across the state of Mississippi for comparison. Actual occurrences of the natural hazards and preparations for dealing with these hazards were recorded by county and MEMA districts. Threat perceptions for hurricanes, ice storms, floods, and lightning showed spatial differences, whereas threats from hail, tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfire showed no spatial differences. All …

Effects Of Prescribed Burning And Herbicide (Imazapyr) On The Abundance And Diversity Of Selected Invertebrate Communities In Thinned Pine Plantations Of Mississippi, Raymond Bruce Iglay Dec 2007

Effects Of Prescribed Burning And Herbicide (Imazapyr) On The Abundance And Diversity Of Selected Invertebrate Communities In Thinned Pine Plantations Of Mississippi, Raymond Bruce Iglay

Theses and Dissertations

Prescribed fire and herbicides are 2 silviculture tools used by forest managers to control hardwood competition in pine (Pinus spp.) forests. I tested effects of prescribed burning and herbicides on selected invertebrate communities, including carabid beetles, and compared 2 invertebrate sampling approaches in thinned, intensively managed pine stands in Kemper County, Mississippi. I used 6 replicate stands containing 4, 10-ha treatment plots each that were randomly assigned treatments of burn only, herbicide only, burn/herbicide, and control. I suction-sampled invertebrate communities and pitfall trapped carabid beetles to examine treatment responses. Direct effects of burning and overall vegetation response influenced communities most …

An Examination Of The Implementation Of The Americans With Disabilities Act (Ada) In Mississippi Community Colleges, John Carter Arnold Dec 2007

An Examination Of The Implementation Of The Americans With Disabilities Act (Ada) In Mississippi Community Colleges, John Carter Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges face great challenges in dealing with students with disabilities. The purpose of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is to extend protection against discrimination to individuals with disabilities. Although the Americans with Disabilities Act is very general and does not address specific situations, the fact is clear that colleges are mandated to provide equal educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Proper implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act is necessary not only to assure compliance with the law but also to assure that every student is afforded equal opportunity to achieve success in college. The problem …

Economic Impacts Of White-Tailed Deer From Hunting In Mississippi, Micah Whittington Whiteside Aug 2007

Economic Impacts Of White-Tailed Deer From Hunting In Mississippi, Micah Whittington Whiteside

Theses and Dissertations

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are an important ecological, social, and economic resource in Mississippi. Studies have been conducted on expenditures by white-tailed deer hunters, but none have administered a research-based, economic impact assessment for white-tailed deer in Mississippi. The economic impacts and associated values of white-tailed deer in Mississippi through a selfministered mail questionnaire were examined to collect white-tailed deer hunter expenditure data during the 2003/2004 hunting season. Expenditures of white-tailed deer hunters were obtained from a mail survey (N = 1,257, 38.6% response rate) and were used in an input-output model to determine economic impacts for the State. Economic …

The Effects Of Changing Technology On Average Costs For Mississippi Cotton Producers: From 1996 - 2005, William Michael Thompson Ii Aug 2007

The Effects Of Changing Technology On Average Costs For Mississippi Cotton Producers: From 1996 - 2005, William Michael Thompson Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Row crop production can be characterized by constant change. Agricultural technology is responsible for most of the changes in productivity observed at the field level since the advent of mechanized farm equipment. Genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties have changed many aspects of cotton production in the United States. The advent of GM varieties has been the source of altered cropping practices in cotton production. The rapid adoption of GM cotton varieties in Mississippi has allowed producers to alter certain aspects of their farming operation because of added flexibility, increased yields, and other benefits of GM varieties. This study analyses the …

The Role Of Expectations On Waterfowl Hunter Satisfaction, Kevin D. Brunke May 2007

The Role Of Expectations On Waterfowl Hunter Satisfaction, Kevin D. Brunke

Theses and Dissertations

Hunter satisfaction has received extensive attention in the literature, but the role of expectations on satisfaction has been neglected. Consumer satisfaction researchers often use the expectancy disconfirmation paradigm (i.e., differences between expectations and reality) to address relationships between expectations and satisfaction. I used this paradigm to examine the relationship between expectations and satisfaction for waterfowl hunters in Arkansas and Mississippi. I found hunter satisfaction was a partial function of fulfilled expectations in both studies. Performance-only measures generally correlated more strongly with overall satisfaction than disconfirmations measured by a difference score. Conversely, disconfirmation of expectations for a season measured on a …
