Moonlight In Miami: A Field Study Of Human-Robot Interaction In The Context Of An Urban Search And Rescue Disaster Response Training Exercise, Jennifer L. Burke Sep 2004

Moonlight In Miami: A Field Study Of Human-Robot Interaction In The Context Of An Urban Search And Rescue Disaster Response Training Exercise, Jennifer L. Burke

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores human-robot interaction during a 16-hour high-fidelity Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) disaster response drill with teleoperated robots. Situation awareness and team interaction were examined using communication analysis. Operators (n=5) sought assistance from team members to compensate for difficulties building or maintaining situation awareness. Operator-team member communication focused on relating what was seen through the robot's eye view with prior knowledge and planning search strategies. Results suggest operators need a new cognitive mental model to filter and comprehend data provided by the robot, and that robot-assisted search is a team task rather than an individual one. USAR technical …

Addressing Barriers To Technology Integration: A Case Study Of A Rural School, Beth Ferguson Coghlan May 2004

Addressing Barriers To Technology Integration: A Case Study Of A Rural School, Beth Ferguson Coghlan

Theses and Dissertations

Despite research which found that using technology in teaching is beneficial to students, few teachers continue to use technology in their instruction. The research literature addressed four barriers to technology infusion by teachers: lack of tools, time, training, and support. Many teachers do not have the equipment to implement technology into their instruction and do not have the time to learn technology skills as well as implement technology into their lessons. Many teachers lack the training to use technology in their instruction and also lack the support from those in the school to infuse technology in their instruction. A case …

A Teacher's Approach: Integrating Technology Appropriately Into A First Grade Classroom, Loretta J. Phalen May 2004

A Teacher's Approach: Integrating Technology Appropriately Into A First Grade Classroom, Loretta J. Phalen

Master of Education Research Theses

How are first grade classrooms using technology? How are children using technology at home? Does the use of technology really improve academic achievement? An experiment was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using technology to teach a unit in Social Studies to first grade students. The study occurred in a Christian school in Lancaster, Ohio using thirty-seven first grade students. One class comprised the control group with Social Studies instruction taught in a traditional manner. The other class was the experimental group, which used technology such as the Internet, PowerPoint Presentations, and video and audio recordings to provide the instruction. …

Faculty And Teacher Candidate Computer Self -Efficacy And The Relationship Of Faculty Computer Self -Efficacy, Technology Professional Development, And Technology Use, Rebecca A. Callaway

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the possible relationship among faculty computer self-efficacy, technology professional development, and the extent of technology use in Louisiana's college and university classrooms. Additionally, faculty computer self-efficacy and teacher candidate computer self-efficacy were compared.

Participation was voluntary, involving higher education faculty and teacher candidates from the nineteen teacher preparation institutions within Louisiana. Faculty completed online surveys. A 30-item Likert-type scale was used to measure computer self-efficacy. Faculty also reported their involvement in technology training over the last five years and their technology use in the classroom. Teacher candidates completed either an online or …

Secondary Students Using Expert Heuristics In The Analysis Of Digitalized Historical Documents, Daniel W. Stuckart Mar 2004

Secondary Students Using Expert Heuristics In The Analysis Of Digitalized Historical Documents, Daniel W. Stuckart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In time, more historical documents have become accessible through various technological modes including the Internet, CD-ROMs, and local databases. Teachers are now able to infuse a rich variety of resources into lessons with relative ease. This study measured expert historian heuristics in secondary students engaged in analysis of technologically-enhanced historical documents relating to women in the early United States republic. Nine 10th grade Advanced Placement world history students from an urban high school in the southeastern United States were assigned randomly to one of three conditions: paper historical documents, HTML historical documents, and HTML historical documents with simulated, limited Internet …

Ip Traceback Of Denial Of Service Attacks Using Mobile Agents Technology, Ghada Magdi Hashem El-Keissi

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Denial of Service (DoS) attack is considered a critical threat to networks. A DoS is a destructive attack aiming at denying services to legitimate users. An attacker could create an attack that floods a network, disrupts a connection between two computers, or even crashes a computer. Accordingly, legitimate users will not be able to have access to services needed. DoS attacks could originate from a single attacker or it could originate from multiple attackers creating Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks towards a target victim. One of the main problems ofDoS attacks is the ability of an attacker to forge …

An Investigation Of The Proficiency Level Of High School Students With Autism And Mental Retardation Within Community-Based Job Settings: The Relationship Between The Use Of A Hand-Held Computer Compared To Staff Modeling For Accurate Novel Job Skill Acquisition And Student Learning, Kimberly Gen Spence-Cochran Jan 2004

An Investigation Of The Proficiency Level Of High School Students With Autism And Mental Retardation Within Community-Based Job Settings: The Relationship Between The Use Of A Hand-Held Computer Compared To Staff Modeling For Accurate Novel Job Skill Acquisition And Student Learning, Kimberly Gen Spence-Cochran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects and efficacy of two vocational instructional interventions - a Hand-Held Computer intervention versus a Staff Model intervention - as vocational instructional tools for high school students with autism and mental retardation. Specifically, the study analyzed the effects of these two treatments on the completion of authentic novel job tasks within a local department store. This research indicated the provision of specific technology as an instructional model positively influenced participants' ability to: accurately complete tasks, exercise increased independence during task completion, reduce problematic behavior during task completion, and lower necessary staff prompts during task completion. The …

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis Jan 2004

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis

Honors Theses

The name of the world's largest hydroelectric dam, Brazil's Itaipu Binacional, comes from an Ava-Guarani word meaning "singing stone." Before Itaipu became affiliated with dams it represented a smaller, but no less significant monument: a large rock formation in the middle of the Parana River that produced song when struck by water.₂ Today, neither the rock nor the Ava-Guarani tribe remain. In their place is a gargantuan hydroelectric dam that produces sounds more like a thunderous engine than song. When the Brazilian government, in conjunction with Itaipu Binacional officials, constructed the power plant, it not only silenced the singing stone, …
