Selecting Appropriate Product Concepts For Manufacture In Developing Countries, Danielle Johnson Dec 2003

Selecting Appropriate Product Concepts For Manufacture In Developing Countries, Danielle Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

There is a noticeable lack of production of indigenously engineered and manufactured products in Less Developed Countries (LDC's). Few products developed in these LDC's could be viable in competitive markets or even sold as components and supplies to other manufacturers of competitive goods. Assumintg that these less developed countries do not innovate and manufacture because they cannot, the next logical question to ask is why can they not?

This thesis looks at the problems of manufacture and design in LDC's from the standpoint of Product Development. It begins by looking at development theories, namely top down and bottom up and …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This descriptive study examined the current status of future planning preparation by caregivers for individuals with developmental disabilities, including mental retardation (DD/MR) in the State of Utah. Other descriptive variables identified areas of planning in which the caregivers required assistance, perceived barriers to future planning, and preferences regarding conveyance of planning information.

Persons with developmental disabilities were identified by the state computer system as either on the waiting list for or currently receiving services through the Division of Services for People with Disabilities. The targeted sample was narrowed to persons with developmental disabilities over the age of 20 years who …

"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener May 2003

"With A Joint View To The Entertainment And Information Of Mankind:" The Development Of Eighteenth Century British Tourism, Sarah Caroline Wegener

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Tourism in its current form did not exist until the nineteenth century with the emergence of the railroads. However, crucial developments in mid-eighteenth century Great Britain started the process leading to modem tourism. Over the course of the eighteenth century, the concept behind tourism expanded and its motivations were transformed. Early eighteenth century tourism was associated with wealth and class. United in their various interests by a common desire, tourists sought experience to assist them in their future life. By the end of the century a shift had taken place, and tourism took on a new face. Though this form …

The Zone Of Proximal Development In An Online Esl Composition Course, Jennifer Ann Paver Jan 2003

The Zone Of Proximal Development In An Online Esl Composition Course, Jennifer Ann Paver

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study investigated the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) in an online ESL composition course. The study analyzed the correspondence between three Koreans and one Russian participant with their instructor that occurred through the WebCT computer-mediated communication (CMC) software tools of asynchronous e-mail and discussion boards and synchronous chat. The results indicated that, (1) personal background issues, (2) personal views of the instructor, and (3) motivation, attitude, and personal awareness of tool utilization impacted the participants' use of the CMC tools and this in turn impacted the ZPD. The implications of the study are discussed in terms of the …

Development Of A Synthetic Route To Aminofluorohexenones As Precursors For Novel Caspase Inhibitors, Ping Xi Jan 2003

Development Of A Synthetic Route To Aminofluorohexenones As Precursors For Novel Caspase Inhibitors, Ping Xi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Apoptosis is a normal biological process in which cells commit suicide. In cancer cells, a family of proteases called caspases, is involved in one or more of the signaling pathways leading to apoptosis. To better understand this cellular mechanism at the molecular level, selective inhibition of each caspase would allow scientists to determine the exact function of that caspase in the overall pathway. The long term goal of this research project is the synthesis of new, highly specific caspase inhibitors that will be used to study the mechanism of apoptosis in certain cancer cells. The first step, and the primary …

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo(4)(-)) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N Golli Jan 2003

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo(4)(-)) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N Golli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Perchlorate not only blocks the body's ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands' internal stores of iodine. Many of the steps that regulate metamorphosis in amphibians are also triggered by thyroid hormones therefore we investigated the ability of perchlorate to interfere with the development and metamorphosis of Rana pipiens . Aquaria containing concentrations of 40 ppb, 400 ppb, and 4000 ppb perchlorate with a 0 ppb perchlorate control as well as a magnesium control (since magnesium perchlorate was used) to evaluate the growth and development of …

Development Of An Automated Gis Tool To Identify And Rank High Pedestrian Crash Zones, Vanjeeswaran Krishna Kumar Kannimangalam Jan 2003

Development Of An Automated Gis Tool To Identify And Rank High Pedestrian Crash Zones, Vanjeeswaran Krishna Kumar Kannimangalam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Pedestrian safety is an important concern on many urban streets in the United States. Identification of high pedestrian crash zones is an important component to help allocate resources to enhance pedestrian safety by reducing the number and severity of crashes in a cost effective way. High crash zones identify the locations that pose high risks to pedestrians. The main objective of this research is to develop an automated Geographical Information Systems (GIS) based tool to identify and rank high pedestrian crash zones. The tool identifies spatial concentration patterns and high pedestrian crash zones, extracts the crash characteristics and population details …

CS Online seeks to accomplish this by offering active learning experiences set in real-world contexts. The intended outcomes are increased interest in computer science as an academic discipline, increased enrollments in related courses, and increased achievement resulting from cognitive skills growth; The CS Online system generated data while 36 high school students solved programming problems, and questionnaires administered by the system were used to collect information about students' self-regulatory skills and …

Freedom As The Ends And Means Of Development: An Examination Of Garrison Communities And Their Effects In Kingston, Jamaica, Shemona Renae Simpson Jan 2003

Freedom As The Ends And Means Of Development: An Examination Of Garrison Communities And Their Effects In Kingston, Jamaica, Shemona Renae Simpson

LSU Master's Theses

This study applies and expands Sen’s concept of development as freedom using Jamaica as a case study. Using quantitative data acquired from the Center for Migration and Development’s case study on Urbanization During the Years of Crisis in the Caribbean (1993), this research analyzes the impact of the entrenchment of garrison communities on Jamaica’s overall development in terms of the freedoms allotted to individuals within society. The methodology used for testing the hypothesis that garrison entrenchment has constrained individual level freedom presents findings from a quantitative analysis of the relationship between garrison entrenchment at the community level and individual level …

Social Sector Participatory Development In Honduras: A Process Across Institutions, Culturesval And Continents, Denese Ashbaugh Vlosky

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research was conducted to determine whether our participatory process of curriculum development for vocational technical schools in Honduras was successful. This study analyzed program documents and correspondence to answer two questions: a) How did individual stakeholders perceive and negotiate the participatory process? and b) What factors --individual and environmental-- promoted and impeded the participatory process of development in this project? Participatory development concepts applied to Human Ecology Theory guided this research. Qualitative methodologies were utilized to develop the curriculum—Phenomenology-- and to evaluate the process of development—Grounded Theory and Matrix Analysis. An analysis of individual counterpart contacts revealed that stakeholder …
