Correlates And Predictors Of Employee Turnover Intentions In The Postal Industry! A Case Study Of The Omaha Hub Of United Parcel Service, Carla Y. Garay

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to identify the correlates and predictors of turnover intentions among manual laborers. The study was exploratory and used a modification of the Rusbult and Farrell (1983) investment model as its theoretical framework. Simple correlation analysis uncovered no significant relationships between the fifteen independent variables and turnover intention, with one exception; there was a significant correlation between intent to retire and turnover intention. Therefore, further analysis was conducted by testing each independent variable against each item of turnover intentions. The independent variables that were found to be significantly correlated with the items of turnover intentions …

Individuals With Disabilities As Parents And Their Earliest Connections To Systems Of Support, Mary Clare Schuh

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences of individuals with disabilities as parents, and the variables influencing the referral processes used by pre and postnatal care professionals to connect parents with disabilities to systems of family support. This process was examined through the experiences, beliefs, and attitudes of pre and postnatal care professionals as well as through the experiences and perspectives of parents with disabilities. Research objectives included both an increased understanding of the relationship between parents with disabilities and their earliest connections to systems of support and policy and practice recommendations for pre and postnatal …

Breaking The Norm: Family Characteristics Associated With The Avoidance Of Corporal Punishment, Wendy Ann Walsh Jan 2002

Breaking The Norm: Family Characteristics Associated With The Avoidance Of Corporal Punishment, Wendy Ann Walsh

Doctoral Dissertations

Corporal punishment (CP) is an acceptable and frequently used discipline tactic, with 94% of parents of 2- to 4-year-olds using it (Straus, 2001). Much of the parenting literature indicates that there are more positive ways to discipline a child (May, 2000; Sears & Sears, 1995; Spock & Parker, 1998). Yet, only a minority of parents raise children without CP.

Using Belsky's (1984) model of parenting, this study analyzed the 1985 National Family Violence Survey to compare this minority group of parents with those who use CP in order to understand the experiences and context associated with avoiding it. The extent …

Depressive Symptomatology Among Dominicans: Links To Acculturative And Economic Stressors, Skin Tone, And Perceived Discrimination, Teresita Camacho-Gonsalves

Doctoral Dissertations

Latinos have been identified as a population at high risk of developing mental health problems. However, studies on Latinos rarely address differences between subgroups. There are important social and cultural differences between subgroups that are likely to be reflected in differential expressions of depressive symptoms. The fast growing Dominican community in the United States is one subgroup of Latinos that has been understudied and underserved.

The objectives of this dissertation were to explore among Dominicans: (1) the direct and indirect effects of sociodemographic factors and skin tone on psychological distress; (2) the relationships between various stressors (economic, perceived discrimination, and …

Child Welfare Reformers, Academic Psychologists, And The Dependent Child In Progressive Era America, Phyllis Ann Wentworth Jan 2002

Child Welfare Reformers, Academic Psychologists, And The Dependent Child In Progressive Era America, Phyllis Ann Wentworth

Doctoral Dissertations

This study explores what was being done on behalf of dependent children during the Progressive Era, drawing connections between the reform movement and theories and figures from academic psychology. Chapter One is a detailed overview of the 1909 White House Conference on the Care of Dependent Children, with an emphasis on discussions that stress reformers' attitudes toward proper care of dependent children. Chapters Two, Three and Four take up individual themes that emanate from the Conference and correspond with current gaps in the historical literature. Chapter Two explores both the majority position opposing congregate asylums and the minority position supporting …

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Making Change In Early Head Start, Patrice W. Hallock Jan 2002

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Making Change In Early Head Start, Patrice W. Hallock

Doctoral Dissertations

This is a field study of families and home visitors in Early Head Start. Its purpose is to understand the social context of infants born into poverty and to understand the home visiting relationship when families receive intervention services from home visitors who are socially and economically different. Two questions were posed: First, how do socially and economically diverse families perceive infant well-being? Second, what is the experience of families who participate in Early Head Start? The study used interviews, participant observation, and cultural interpretation to understand the perspective of participant families.

The study provided evidence that economically and socially …

Juvenile Justice Reform: A Tale Of Two Systems, Erika Gebo Jan 2002

Juvenile Justice Reform: A Tale Of Two Systems, Erika Gebo

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines two juvenile justice reform efforts in one state. The first initiative, a detention risk assessment tool, is embedded within the second initiative, a family court pilot project. Detention screening tools have been developed primarily to alleviate detention center overcrowding and to reduce disproportionate minority confinement in those centers. The instrument under analysis limits discretion by judges in the detention decision making process. The second reform effort, family court, is premised on the rehabilitative ideal. In these courts, judges are presumably given wide latitude in deciding cases in order to meet the individual needs of each offender. These …

Social Capital And Socio-Economic Status As Determinants Of Physical, Mental, And Self-Rated Overall Health In Canada., Lisa Katherine. Smylie Jan 2002

Social Capital And Socio-Economic Status As Determinants Of Physical, Mental, And Self-Rated Overall Health In Canada., Lisa Katherine. Smylie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Studies have shown that various aspects of the social environment are useful predictors of individual physical and mental health. A large body of epidemiological literature has documented the nature of the relationship between social class, or socio-economic status (SES) and health. Recently, however, the benefits of resources inherent in the structures of social networks, or "social capital", for preventing illness or disease and for achieving health, have been the focus of contemporary epidemiological research. The purpose of this study is to investigate social capital and SES as frameworks for understanding the influence of individual social context on adult health. The …

Technologies Of Governance: The Convergence Of Risk And Discipline In An Open Custody Facility For Young Offenders., Dale A. Ballucci Jan 2002

Technologies Of Governance: The Convergence Of Risk And Discipline In An Open Custody Facility For Young Offenders., Dale A. Ballucci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper expands current debates on governance within corrections by examining the relationship between rationales and technologies deployed in the governance of young female offenders. A detailed examination of formal corrections policies, policy manuals, and interviews with administrators and primary counsellors challenge the notion that there is a pre occupation with risk in contemporary penal practice and that risk rationales and technologies have displaced discipline as dominant strategies of governance. It is certainly true that the logic of risk is present in both discourse and practice and that their development has added a new dimension to the governing process. However, …

Human Capital, Social Capital, And Income Attainment In Canada., Daniele. Cerri Jan 2002

Human Capital, Social Capital, And Income Attainment In Canada., Daniele. Cerri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses the 1989 General Social Survey of Canada in an effort to investigate the potential influence of social capital on income attainment for full-time members of the Canadian workforce. As well, it evaluates the comparative effects of social capital and human capital. More specifically, the analysis investigates whether social capital provides an alternative explanation to human capital for income attainment in the context of ethnicity/race, gender, and immigrant status. Other variables that have been shown to influence income are controlled for, including age, occupation, employment sector, and region. The analysis reveals that both human and social capital have …

Alcoholism, Native And Non-Native Treatment Technologies And The Discourse Of Difference., Kelly Lynn. Henley Jan 2002

Alcoholism, Native And Non-Native Treatment Technologies And The Discourse Of Difference., Kelly Lynn. Henley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the establishment of government-sponsored alcohol treatment facilities for Native people in Canada. An examination of treatment approaches suggests that Native recovery programs are a reflection of other existing treatment technologies. The development of government-sponsored programs represents negotiated territory between "self-determination" and the government's effort to re-define citizenship. The following sources of information were included in this project; face-to-face interviews with staff members from different treatment facilities, a review of websites outlining the treatment programs in Native facilities, an analysis of documents on Alcoholics Anonymous and a review of literature that outlines Aboriginality and "governable spaces." Seven interviews …

Women In Transition: Discourses Of Menopause., Sue. Mcpherson Jan 2002

Women In Transition: Discourses Of Menopause., Sue. Mcpherson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discourses of menopause are varied and complex, just as the lives of women themselves are diverse and multifaceted. For this study of menopause and women's lives, using life story methodology I have gathered information, anecdotes, poems, and personal revelations through interviews conducted with ten women. Drawing on the stories of their lives, I have explored the ways women think about their experience of menopause and related aspects of their lives. The feminist poststructuralist framework I have used consists of two elements, poststructuralism and feminism. The poststructuralist framework uses theories of language and concepts of discourse, dualisms, subjectivity and consciousness, power, …

Learning To Conform: Globalization, Governance And Unesco's Basic Education., Christiana Maria. Gauger Jan 2002

Learning To Conform: Globalization, Governance And Unesco's Basic Education., Christiana Maria. Gauger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the body of international development literature there are critiques of the homogenous agenda that can be a part of the process of globalization. Globalization can be a means of forwarding a particular agenda on to the world's stage---for example capitalism or human rights---an agenda that may include a single set of criteria to be followed by those involved in it. But can universal standards exist such that they may be unproblematically applied to all peoples, in any place? Some global organizations have built themselves upon the premise that universal standards are not only viable, but that they are necessary …

Governing The Politics Of Consent: Gender, Expert Knowledge, And Bill C-49., Marcia Leanne. Oliver Jan 2002

Governing The Politics Of Consent: Gender, Expert Knowledge, And Bill C-49., Marcia Leanne. Oliver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bill C-49 was enacted in the Canadian Criminal Code in 1992. For the first time in Canadian legal history this new legislation provided a definition of consent as it applies to sexual assault offences. The enactment of Bill C-49 by Parliament was clearly aimed at resolving problems that emerged within legal proceedings dealing with sexual assault. Bill C-49 was therefore enacted to govern the legal proceedings of sexual assault cases and actors of the juridical field. The courts, in turn, have adopted complex heterogeneous ways of dealing with, and managing their relations in light of, the legislative amendments of Bill …

Affirming The Voices Of Teen Mothers: Exploring The Influences Of The Reconstruction Of The Welfare State On Teen Mothers In Ontario., Treena L. Clift

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the influences of the reconstruction of the welfare state on teen mothers, a marginalized population in Ontario. It examines how the introduction of the LEAP programme, (learning, earning and parenting), a programme for teen parents on social assistance in Ontario, has influenced the identity of teen mothers. The analysis of this study shows how the teen mothers who have participated in the LEAP programme have experienced structural and ideological influences. These influences were determined through the voices of the teen mothers as they experienced both the power of the state and resistance.Dept. of Sociology and Anthropology. Paper …

Street Crime, Casino Windsor, And The Theory Of Routine Activities (Ontario)., Lauretta. Loong Jan 2002

Street Crime, Casino Windsor, And The Theory Of Routine Activities (Ontario)., Lauretta. Loong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A casino is often assumed to be an irresistible target for motivated offenders because it attracts a large number of tourists. The current study is an inferential time-series analysis of crime in which space (distance from a casino) serves as a measure of capable guardianship. Person, disorder and property offence rates constitute the dependent variables. Conducted with data on eight enumeration areas in Windsor, Ontario, for the period between January 1993 and December 2001, the current study attempts to answer two main questions regarding crime in Canada: (1) What effects do physical and socioeconomic structures have on subcity-level crime rates? …

Social Status And Computer Use: Sophisticated Computer Use As A Cultural Capital?, Daniel James. Holland Jan 2002

Social Status And Computer Use: Sophisticated Computer Use As A Cultural Capital?, Daniel James. Holland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Use of the microcomputer has expanded to almost routine utilization in Canada. Past research on computer use has promulgated the idea that access and use of the microcomputer is the privilege of those who are highly educated, hold prestigious occupations, and earn above average incomes. Other social status factors such as ethnicity and gender have also been demonstrated to have a bearing upon computer access and use. This research puts these findings to the test, by controlling for the primary forms of computer use in the contemporary era, such as word processing, computer programming, and internet use. This research has …
