To Be Almost Like White: The Case Of Soon Ja Du, Augustina Jhi-Ho Chae
To Be Almost Like White: The Case Of Soon Ja Du, Augustina Jhi-Ho Chae
Student Work
This is a case study of Korean Americans’ prejudiced attitudes toward African Americans. To discuss this attitudes, I chose to examine the case of People of the State of California v. Soon Ja Du. On the morning of March 16, 1991, Latasha Harlins, a fifteen-year-old African American high school girl was shot in the back of the head by Soon Ja Du, a fifty-one-year-old Korean liquor and grocery store owner after a fight. This fight started by Soon Ja falsely accusing Latasha of shoplifting. In many ways, Soon Ja Du’s negative attitudes represent a typical Korean American’s prejudice.
Fighting Jim Crow In Post-World War Ii Omaha 1945-1956, Kathleen Mary Davis
Fighting Jim Crow In Post-World War Ii Omaha 1945-1956, Kathleen Mary Davis
Student Work
Blacks in Omaha developed new approaches to fight Jim Crow practices in the post-World War II era. As a result, substantial gains were made in the areas of public accommodations, employment, residential segregation and education. The Omaha Star, a black newspaper, was instrumental in reporting civil rights abuses to its readers, while constantly urging them to unite and fight for their rights. Civil rights organizations played a crucial role in these efforts. The NAACP chapter was established as early as 1918, but after an initial burst it was relatively ineffective until the 1950s. The local Urban League, however, which dated …
Chief For Life: Harold Breier And His Era, Ronald Howard Snyder
Chief For Life: Harold Breier And His Era, Ronald Howard Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
Harold Breier served as Milwaukee's Chief of Police from 1964 until 1984. His tenure occurred during a time of cultural upheaval in the United States, marked by the turmoil of the civil rights movement, the peace movement, and a youth rebellion against traditional societal values and norms. Many people perceived Breier as an opponent of cultural or political change. He was accused of tolerating excessive police force, especially when minority citizens or counterculture youth were involved, and presiding over a racially segregated police department. Others credited him with making Milwaukee one of the safest cities in the country and protecting …

Texas School Finance Equalization And Student Performance, Christopher Duque
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The thesis examines which factors or school district inputs, i.e., financial, socio-economic, and administrative have a significant effect on student performance in Texas' school districts. The thesis is divided into five chapters, the introduction and the legal history of school finance reform, the history of Texas school finance policies and the current school finance policy, the literature review, the hypothesis and methodology, and the findings and conclusion of the thesis. The percentage of economically disadvantaged students was found to be significantly related to student performance in the thesis. And the thesis concludes that the state's school finance equalization policy has …
Niobrara National Scenic River, 1985-2000: Old Arguments, New Compromises, James A. Roeder
Niobrara National Scenic River, 1985-2000: Old Arguments, New Compromises, James A. Roeder
Student Work
In May 1991, President George H. Bush signed into law the Niobrara Scenic River Designation Act, which gave federal scenic-river designation to a 70-mile stretch of this northern-Nebraska river. The successful effort to protect this river was a protracted, often acrimonious battle, pitting Nebraska neighbors against each other. Interested parties found themselves on opposing sides of a seemingly insurmountable divide, either believing that this river resource should be given federal protection to preserve it unimpaired for future generations, or arguing that the local people should be allowed to determine the fate of “their” river without federal interference. The twentieth century …
Community, Fortitude, Satisfaction, And Loyalty: Tests Of Oliver's Proposed Frameworks, J. Martin Fraering
Community, Fortitude, Satisfaction, And Loyalty: Tests Of Oliver's Proposed Frameworks, J. Martin Fraering
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This paper discusses tests of two competing loyalty frameworks proposed by Richard L. Oliver. The cognition to action (CTA) loyalty model specifies four phases: cognitive loyalty, affective loyalty, conative loyalty, and action loyalty, a framework originally discussed by Oliver. The fortitude-community (F-C) loyalty model argues that loyalty is a function of the degree of personal fortitude and the extent to which customers feel that they are members of a community of consumers. In both of these models loyalty is posited to arise from customer satisfaction. Research hypotheses are formulated that assert positive relationships between satisfaction and various loyalty constructs. The …
The Impact Of Apartment Complexes On Property Values Of Single-Family Dwellings West Of Lnterstate-680 In Omaha, Nebraska, Lesli M. Rawlings
The Impact Of Apartment Complexes On Property Values Of Single-Family Dwellings West Of Lnterstate-680 In Omaha, Nebraska, Lesli M. Rawlings
Student Work
The literature concerning land use exhaustively describes why homeowners dislike apartment complexes, but fails to analyze the problem quantitatively. The objectives of this thesis were to determine if the selling price of single-family dwellings increased with increasing distance from the apartment complex and to determine if the selling price of single-family dwellings decreased with increasing structural density of apartment complexes in Omaha, Nebraska. Fifty apartments built in the year 2000 or before, and 1,665 single-family dwellings, which sold in 1999 and 2000 within 914.4 meters of an apartment complex, were geocoded by address. Data needed to test the hypotheses were …
Stock Return Volatility In Emerging Equity Markets: The Relative Effects Of Country And Global Factors, Benjamin Adam Abugri
Stock Return Volatility In Emerging Equity Markets: The Relative Effects Of Country And Global Factors, Benjamin Adam Abugri
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The rapid growth of capital markets in developing countries has come as a major event in recent financial history. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), portfolio flows to emerging countries has kept rising since the early 1980s and the trend has continued even after a number of financial crises (IFC, 2000). Probably one of the most commonly known characteristics of these markets is their high volatility compared to the more developed markets. But results of studies on volatilities in these markets are often based on estimates of the variance of market indexes or asset returns over relatively long periods …
R&D, Advertising And The Market Value Of Internet Firms, Damir Tokic
R&D, Advertising And The Market Value Of Internet Firms, Damir Tokic
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this study is to explain the valuation of Internet firms during the valuation “bubble” period from 1996 to 2000. The theoretical foundation of the study is the investment opportunities approach to the valuation of growth shares. Consistent with predictions of the investment opportunities approach, the results show a positive and statistically significant relationship between the market value of Internet firms and investments in R&D and advertising in each year of the sample period. These findings strongly support the view that R&D and advertising are intangible assets. The investment opportunities approach also predicts a positive relationship between market …
The Prairie Grass Dividing: The History Of The Saunders County Farmers' Alliance, 1889-1897, John A. Sautter
The Prairie Grass Dividing: The History Of The Saunders County Farmers' Alliance, 1889-1897, John A. Sautter
Student Work
The Farmers Alliance was one of the most important agricultural organizations in late nineteenth century America. This thesis traces the history of the Alliance movement in Saunders County, Nebraska, where it was one of the strongest in the state between 1889 and 1892. In addition, it examines the emergence of third party Populist politics, as they relate to this farm organization. Saunders County, located in eastern Nebraska, developed a strong Alliance movement culture, that included cooperative ventures, an educational program and social activities. Several producer and consumer cooperative ventures were started by members after they joined the organization. In some …

A Comparison Of Physical And Performance Characteristics Of Ncaa Division I Football Players: 1987 And 2000, Craig A. Secora
Student Work
Few studies have established normative data on performance variables of football and fewer exist that compare results from one decade to the next. In 1985, Olson and Hunter compared the data from 1974 and 1984 on 13 Division I team's. Berg, Latin and Baechle (1990) collected normative data on 40 Division I teams and made comparisons to rankings, offensive vs. defensive players, position comparisons, and major conferences. However, this research is outdated and no current research has assessed the changes in performance variables over time for Division I football players. The purpose of this study is to compare normative data …
Antidumping And The Business Cycle: Filing Behavior And Itc Decision Making, Ke Yang
Antidumping And The Business Cycle: Filing Behavior And Itc Decision Making, Ke Yang
Student Work
Since the first national antidumping law was established in Canada in 1904, antidumping policy has evolved constantly as a legal trade restriction under General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) provisions. This paper studies the determinants of antidumping filings by U.S. industries from 1980 to 1995 using panel count regression analysis. The paper also investigates factors that influence the International Trade Commission’s (ITC) injury determinations over these cases. Considerable support is found for the importance of the business cycle in driving antidumping filings and affecting the ITC’s injury determinations. Other important determinants include industries’ capacity utilization ratio, industrial trade deficit, …

Working Class And Working College : A Case Study Of First Generation, Working Class, First Year, White Male College Students., Robert Michael Longwell-Grice 1955-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a case study involving four, first generation, working class, college students. The dissertation study chronicled the experiences of these students during their first semester at the college. In order to more effectively focus on the aspects of social class and first generation status, the study was restricted to white males. First generation, working class students must negotiate a difficult transition from their working class culture to the culture of academia, in order to be successful in college. This transition typically requires significant re-negotiation of relationships with family members and friends, who are not always supportive of their …
An Exploratory Analysis Of Mexican-American Parental Involvement Perspectives On Home, School, And Community Collaboration, Lisa Kay Hall-Irby
An Exploratory Analysis Of Mexican-American Parental Involvement Perspectives On Home, School, And Community Collaboration, Lisa Kay Hall-Irby
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
When schools consider their relationship with families as a partnership wherein the home and school contribute to children's educational and social development, the results are increased levels of parental involvement. This exploratory analysis involves a study of Mexican-American parents and their perspectives on how they perceive themselves in the home, school, and community collaboration process. This study seeks to explore the traditional parental involvement model and uses existing theory that challenges the traditional model to create a new re-conceptualized model of parental involvement. Using qualitative case study methodology parental involvement data were gathered by using five focus groups and a …
The Art And Myth Of The Coyote And Related Folk Tales From The South Texas And Northern Mexican Border, Esau Rubio Pena
The Art And Myth Of The Coyote And Related Folk Tales From The South Texas And Northern Mexican Border, Esau Rubio Pena
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This paper will examine the relationship between the myth of the coyote and the folk tales that are indigenous to the South Texas/Mexican border. Moreover, I intend to explore several common folk tales pertaining to the coyote and how I have chosen to synthesize them into my artwork. In my paintings, I have become cognizance that the coyote possesses many identities. In one instance, the coyote can appear as a wild animal, a rogue of nature; however, in another instance I have learned that the coyote is a highly adaptive creature capable of being a protector of the natural world. …
Troubled Waters: A Reprisal Of Sea Power And Maritime Importance In The Turbulent Years Of The Texas Revolt, Andrew Reynolds Galloway
Troubled Waters: A Reprisal Of Sea Power And Maritime Importance In The Turbulent Years Of The Texas Revolt, Andrew Reynolds Galloway
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The first section shall deal with the role the sea played following Mexican Independence. In the foreign colonization of Texas, Stephen F. Austin developed and designed his colonies similar to the agricultural communities of the American South that were built around nautical transportation from 1821–1829. The second area will deal with Mexican Texas from 1829 through 1832. By 1829 Mexico attempted to reinstate authority over Texas. Reaction to Mexican limitations was unified action through civil disobedience. As their rebellion brought the desired freedoms for the Texicans, they were encouraged to continue. The third discussion is the revolutionary period from 1832 …

Four Case Studies Of Hispanic Children's Responses To A Videotaped Language Sampling Procedure, Adelaida E. Saenz
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This investigation was an examination of four Hispanic children's responses to a videotaped language sampling procedure, and was designed to determine bilingual (English/Spanish) and monolingual (English) children's expressive language development. Participants consisted of four normally developing Hispanic monolingual and bilingual males from the Rio Grande Valley between the ages of 8–6 and 9–2 years. Language samples were evoked using a videotape appropriate for children entitled Frankenweenie © . Following viewing of the videotape, children participated in a controlled conversation to explain what they had seen and to complete a twenty-one-item survey to measure their attitude toward the videotape. Total word …
Correlates And Predictors Of Employee Turnover Intentions In The Postal Industry! A Case Study Of The Omaha Hub Of United Parcel Service, Carla Y. Garay
Correlates And Predictors Of Employee Turnover Intentions In The Postal Industry! A Case Study Of The Omaha Hub Of United Parcel Service, Carla Y. Garay
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to identify the correlates and predictors of turnover intentions among manual laborers. The study was exploratory and used a modification of the Rusbult and Farrell (1983) investment model as its theoretical framework. Simple correlation analysis uncovered no significant relationships between the fifteen independent variables and turnover intention, with one exception; there was a significant correlation between intent to retire and turnover intention. Therefore, further analysis was conducted by testing each independent variable against each item of turnover intentions. The independent variables that were found to be significantly correlated with the items of turnover intentions …
Mexican American Women: Unique Superintendents In Texas, Maria Cristina Quilantan
Mexican American Women: Unique Superintendents In Texas, Maria Cristina Quilantan
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The number of Mexican American women educators is disproportionate to the number of Mexican American women in administrative positions, especially at the superintendency level. During the school year 2001–2002, there were 1,175 superintendents in the State of Texas; 939 male, 66 Mexican American males; 159 White females, and 10 Mexican American women. The stereotypical sex-role expectations are evident among Mexican American women; these expectations are governed by a value system that follows tradition and culture in which docility and passivity are inculcated at a very early age. The organizational structure of the public school system also marginalizes the involvement of …
