UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Nature Preserve at the Clark County Wetlands Park is a constructed wetland that has the potential to produce new mosquito habitat. This thesis evaluates the potential for the development of a mosquito problem at the newly constructed wetland system by assessing the population dynamics of mosquitoes within the Nature Preserve. Based on data collected from May 2001 through January 2002, I describe fluctuations in mosquito genus and relative abundance during the first summer through winter period of wetland development.

Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley Jan 2002

Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Several methods of analysis were used to test the robustness of sea level signals recorded in Middle to lower Upper Cambrian shallow-water carbonate rocks in the southwestern United States and to refine stratigraphic correlation of this interval. Embedded Markov chain and cycle architectural analysis define the high-frequency accommodation signal, whereas cycle grouping pattern and facies proportions analysis reveals low-frequency sequence stratigraphic accommodation changes. Gamma analysis and Fischer plots were unsuccessful in deciphering the signature of high or low frequency signals; Six low-frequency accommodation events are present in the Middle to lower Upper Cambrian Highland Peak Formation. Each sequence is bounded …

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn Jan 2002

Pricing And Eminent Domain Takings: A Case Study Of Residential Property In Las Vegas, Nevada, William C Kuhn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This case study tests whether compensation for eminent domain takings equals estimated market prices for residential property located near McCarran Airport in Clark County Nevada. The hedonic model provides evidence that takings compensation was often less than estimated market price, a discount was paid to owners of smaller homes, and a premium was paid to owners of larger homes. Although data constraints, estimation issues and lack of previous studies hamper broad conclusions, the robust data set, consistency of model specification results, and the explanatory power of economic thought is evident in these results. The results are somewhat surprising in that …

Gis For Source Water Assessment And Nonpoint Source Modeling In The Las Vegas Valley, Marcelo Reginato

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis develops a better understanding of issues related to surface water contamination and protection of drinking water sources in the Las Vegas Valley. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to identify source water protection zones and to estimate nonpoint source loads for the entire watershed; The extent of the source water protection zones is represented by the valley's dry weather flows. After source water protection zones were defined, field work and GIS defined the potential contaminant sources and land uses within the protection zones; The GIS nonpoint source model shows that roads account for approximately 25% of the …

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker Jan 2002

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines power and political processes involved in the decision to construct a second commercial airport for Las Vegas, NV and the southern Nevada region. Using interview data and document analysis I argue that the organizational capacity of the state and its relative autonomy enabled state actors to dominate the airport's development process by defining the need and setting the agenda for the project. Additionally, state officials acquired the land for the project by circumventing established mechanisms for public participation and involvement. The findings support a state-centered approach to understanding who wields power and how in political processes. Ultimately, …

The planning and development of this pilot program "The Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids" focused on teaching life skills and character development, such as getting along with others, respect for oneself and others, initiative, the ability to communicate, problem solving, perseverance, and goal setting …

Bacillus Anthracis Spore Concentrations At Various Carcass Sites, Pamala Rose Coker Jan 2002

Bacillus Anthracis Spore Concentrations At Various Carcass Sites, Pamala Rose Coker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of the disease anthrax, is a bacteria of great importance, both in the past and today. Despite this importance, many questions remain regarding defending against its use as a biological weapon, the bacteria's variation in virulence, and its epidemiology in nature. Using Etest strips (AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) to measure the MICs, 25 genetically diverse isolates of B. anthracis were tested to determine their susceptibility to seven clinically relevant antimicrobial agents. Using the NCCLS MIC breakpoints for staphylococci, three isolates were found to be resistant to penicillin and negative for beta-lactamase production. From a group …
