Assessment Of Groundwater Resources In Selected Areas Of Al Ain In The U.A.E., Fatma Abdullatif Al Shahi

Theses

The sustainable development of any region depends on the availability of water resources. In arid and semi-arid regions, the shortage in freshwater resources constitutes the major constraint against the expansion in agricultural and industrial activities. Therefore, every possible effort should be made to assess, develop and sustain the limited freshwater water resource in such regions.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is located in an arid region, where the climate is harsh and the renewable freshwater resources are very limited. Despite the severe shortage in water resources, water is misused and sometimes wasted. The per capita daily consumption in the UAE …

Inflation, Financial Development And Growth, Hishame Gamal Khedr Jun 2002

Inflation, Financial Development And Growth, Hishame Gamal Khedr

Archived Theses and Dissertations

All throughout the economic tradition, economists have been interested in studying the positive effects of inflation. However, recent empirical research has found strong evidence that inflation has negative effects on economic growth. This thesis, "Inflation, Financial Development and Growth", is concerned with the degree of development of the financial markets and how these markets transmit the inflation effects. How that the availability of money alternatives allows the households and firms to escape inflation tax, and consequently results in social losses? How that the exchangeability of inside and outside money transmitted inflation effects? The main findings of this thesis are that …

Framework For A System To Model Casino Development, Benjamin Harold Mammina Jan 2002

Framework For A System To Model Casino Development, Benjamin Harold Mammina

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to develop a system to model casino development without the user's need for information from architects, contractors or consultants. The target user would be a casino executive who had business experience, but minimal real estate development experience. Successful modeling would be based upon a favorable ratio of developmental costs to income projections known as Return on Investment (ROI). In this study factors used to calculate ROI for casino development projects were analyzed by examination of actual ROI calculations that were previously performed by experienced casino executives who had support from architect, contractors and consultants. …

This thesis presents a scheduling algorithm for production planning, which involves the management of resources like equipment, tools, personnel, materials etc. The scheduling algorithm implements some of the principles of Just-In-Time manufacturing and hence has a combination of finite and infinite scheduling algorithms. It works with database such as MS Access, SQL server or Oracle etc. and has proven to reduce the total production time. In the case tested, the production time for an order of 750 Apron Hooks, the production time was reduced by 36 machine hours (4 days) from 224 hours to 188 hours. A test bed has …

The Development And Optimization Of A Hydrogen-Fueled Internal Combustion Engine, Troy M Braithwaite Jan 2002

The Development And Optimization Of A Hydrogen-Fueled Internal Combustion Engine, Troy M Braithwaite

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Conventional internal combustion engines modified to burn hydrogen fuel offer a good transition mode to a hydrogen economy for transportation applications. Details are given about the development of one such approach. This effort starts with a conventional 454 cubic inch Chevrolet V-8 engine that is then modified in various ways to accommodate the use of hydrogen; including specially formed intake and exhaust passages, modified cam, and fuel injection. Because the application is for constant speed application, tuned intake and exhaust is used.

Community College Faculty Attitudes On Professional Development Attendance And Incentives, Patricia T Laflamme Jan 2002

Community College Faculty Attitudes On Professional Development Attendance And Incentives, Patricia T Laflamme

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The full-time teaching faculty of the Community College of Southern Nevada responded to a survey designed to gather their views on internal professional development activities coordinated by the Faculty Center for Learning & Teaching (FCLT). The survey items elicited what types of activities or attitudes interfered with faculty attendance at such activities and what potential incentives or rewards were attractive to them in return for their participation in the activities; Significant findings for reasons that faculty do not participate in professional development primarily revolved around the faculty demographic characteristics of gender or teaching area (vocational or academic). This was true …

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper Jan 2002

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Notostraca) were reared under normoxic (19--21 kPa O2), moderate (10--13 kPa O2) or severe (1--3 kPa O2) hypoxic conditions to investigate the effects of developmental Po2 (partial pressure of oxygen) on adult metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. Growth rates were independent of developmental Po2, although adult body size was significantly smaller in tadpole shrimp reared under severe hypoxic conditions relative to those reared under normoxic conditions. Most organisms increase respiratory surface area in response to hypoxic exposure. Yet growth of the epipodites (proposed respiratory structure) relative to mass (Y = aMb) was significantly reduced …

Rage In The City Of Angels: The Historical Development Of The Skinhead Subculture In Los Angeles, Pete George Simi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the historical development of the racist skinhead subculture in Los Angeles. The skinhead subculture is a highly diverse network of gangs that has experienced significant changes over the last twenty-five years. I use an in-depth case study approach that relies upon extensive observation of and interviews with current and former skinheads to explain how and why L.A. skinhead gangs have changed over time. I argue that the Los Angeles skinhead subculture has moved through three phases of organizational emphasis which I characterize respectively as social, political, and economic oriented gangs. My aim is to analyze how skinheads …

Hypoxanthine Phosphoribosyl Transferase And Early Embryo Development, Michael Gerard Collins Ii Jan 2002

Hypoxanthine Phosphoribosyl Transferase And Early Embryo Development, Michael Gerard Collins Ii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The objectives of the first experiment were to ascertain if there were any differences between two mouse areola and adipose tissue cell lines. These cell lines differed only in the presence or absence of the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) gene. It was found that the cell lines were similar for all parameters. The objectives of the second experiment were to determine if the HPRT gene had an effect on the development of preimplantation mouse embryo. To test this transgenic mouse lines were created. The embryo sex and genotype ratio, the embryo diameter, and the embryo developmental patterns, using a Collin-Ryan …

Sorority Rituals : Rites Of Passage And Their Impact On Contemporary Sorority Women, Mari Ann Callais Jan 2002

Sorority Rituals : Rites Of Passage And Their Impact On Contemporary Sorority Women, Mari Ann Callais

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Very little research has been conducted to assess the effects of sorority membership on undergraduate sorority women. While there have been numerous studies conducted concerning fraternity men, there has been limited research concerning sorority women only and no studies that explore the effects of ritual on the sorority experience. Does ritual have an impact on the values and behavior of contemporary sorority women? Addressing this question requires an in-depth understanding of the role of the sorority experience and examination of the experience to determine if it provides to its membership what it is intended to provide. Based on research conducted …

Development Of Low-Fat Sugar-Free Orange Sherbet Containing Soy Protein, Jonathan Aaron Walker

LSU Master's Theses

Consumer interest in healthy eating and self-medication is not just a passing fad. Soy-based products have become increasingly popular and gradually moved into the mainstream market. Many consumers associate soy with a healthy consumption pattern. Development of frozen desserts that indulge consumers’ eating desire, yet provide potential health benefits, is a challenge. Product appraisal to identify specific sensory attributes driving product acceptance is vital to the introduction of this new product. This thesis research was designed to develop low-fat sugar-free orange sherbet products containing soy protein and to determine the consumer sensory profile driving product acceptance and purchase intent. Two …
