Multiracial Social Identities And Self-Esteem: How Physical Appearance And Heritage Affect The Categorization Self And Others, Estrella Aurora Ramirez

Student Work

One’s self-concept is comprised of both personal and social identities. This study will focus on the racial/ethnic component of social identity for the multiracial population: individuals with heritage from two or more different racial/ethnic groups. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the racial identity process for multiracial individuals and how this process is impacted by the relative status of racial/ethnic groups that comprise one’s heritage and the perceived physical appearance of an individual. Of central concern is how multiracial individuals racially self label as well as how multiracial and monoracial individuals racially categorize other multiracial individuals. Secondly, …

Positive Violations Of Procedural Justice: Effects On Organizational Citizenship Behavior Intentions, Eric Rowlee Jul 1999

Positive Violations Of Procedural Justice: Effects On Organizational Citizenship Behavior Intentions, Eric Rowlee

Student Work

The present study examines the relationship between perceptions of procedural justice and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) intentions. Specifically, it adds to the current literature by studying positive violations of procedural justice. Positive procedural justice violations are defined as violations that give the recipient an undue advantage. Negative procedural justice violations are defined as violations that disadvantage the individual. The study first reviews the existing literature regarding distributive justice, procedural justice, the reciprocity norm, and OCB. Connections between these constructs are identified to explain the relationship between positive violations of procedural justice and OCB intentions, situational satisfaction, and supervisor approval. It …

Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee Jul 1999

Trust And Ethics In International Business Negotiations: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Mohammad Niamat Elahee

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The growing interdependence in the global economic and political arena is resulting in accelerated growth in cross-national commercial relationships. Since some form of negotiation precedes most commercial activities and relationships, the topic of cross-cultural negotiation is of crucial importance to academicians, practitioners, and policy formulators. Despite its importance, research on cross-cultural business negotiation has not been very systematic and most of the empirical studies lack the explanatory power that is necessary for theory building. This study attempts to overcome this shortcoming by systematically linking different dimensions of national culture with different types of negotiation behavior.

This dissertation studies the relationship …

Spillover Effects On Latin American Equity Markets: The Case Of Adrs And Non-Adr Firms, Roberto Jairo Curci-Berrio

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The development of the American Depositary Receipt (ADR) market allows investors desiring to diversify in Latin America to follow three diversification strategies. First, they may invest in Latin American firms traded through ADRs in the U.S. equity market. Second, they may invest in the underlying stocks of Latin American ADRs traded in Latin American stock exchanges. Third, investors may invest in Latin American firms not cross-listed; hereafter called non-ADR firms, and traded in Latin American stock exchanges. This dissertation contributes to the current literature by investigating whether U.S. and Latin American investors improve portfolio performance by investing in ADR or …

The Best Of Its Kind In The West: A History Of Columbus, Nebraska, 1900-1910, Lori Brdicko May 1999

The Best Of Its Kind In The West: A History Of Columbus, Nebraska, 1900-1910, Lori Brdicko

Student Work

The first decade of the twentieth century marked Columbus, Nebraska’s transition from a frontier town to a small midwestem city. During those ten years, the population increased from 3,522 to 5,014, the labor force composition changed, and residents, goaded by Columbus Weekly Telegram editor Edgar Howard, began to think more about the appearance and sanitary condition of the town. The rapidly growing community was soon hard-pressed to provide its citizens with fuel and electrical power to operate an expanding residential and street lighting system. Promoters tried to harness the Loup River’s current to provide that power, but economic conditions did …

Altering The Nebraska Landscape: Tecumseh And Johnson County, 1854-1900, Rebecca L. Howard May 1999

Altering The Nebraska Landscape: Tecumseh And Johnson County, 1854-1900, Rebecca L. Howard

Student Work

The history of a people, be they Native Americans or pioneer settlers, can be uncovered in their landscape. The Euro-American settlers who moved onto the prairies of Nebraska and the Great Plains faced an environment unlike the wooded regions of the East. Native American traditions and land use patterns were replaced by those of the settlers. Nebraska’s Native landscape was altered under the hand of this new dominant culture. Physical alterations included the breaking of the prairie sod for farming and the construction of towns and railroads. Johnson County, Nebraska, which sits among the southeastern counties of the state, was …

Effects Of Labor Unions On Regional Economic Development In Mexico, Rafael Otero May 1999

Effects Of Labor Unions On Regional Economic Development In Mexico, Rafael Otero

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this research is to help determine the net effect of trade unionism in Northern Mexico (Matamoros, Nuevo Laredo, Juárez, and Tijuana). The maquiladora industry is used to empirically test union regional economic effects because there are different union structures along the regions where maquiladora firms are located. The results of the investigation regarding the relative changes in wages in the maquiladora and non-maquiladora sectors for the four cities in the study are consistent with the hypothesis that the real wage growth in a region's maquiladora sector relative to the non-maquiladora sector is associated with the strength of …

The KPSS Model is an investigative model (that includes a set of inter-related concepts, definitions, and propositions) which presents a systematic view of family kinships by specifying relationships among culture and family social systems, care-giving and socialization, and psychosocial development for the purpose of providing researchers with a means for explaining and predicting psychological and social phenomena related to the expression and enactment of family kinships.

Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen Mar 1999

Historians And John C. Calhoun: One Hundred And Fifty Years Of Historiography, John Gregory Jacobsen

Student Work

In a public career spanning forty years, South Carolinian John C. Calhoun served in a variety of offices from state legislator to United States vice president. A central antebellum figure, he presents something of an enigma. Historically, Calhoun has been identified with the South and slavery, both of which he defended vigorously. Yet his significant, if challenging, contributions to American political and constitutional thought have proven to be his most enduring legacy. In the century and a half since his death, he has been the focus of a vast number of historical works ranging from multi-volume biographies to narrowly-focused interpretive …

Curriculum And The Holocaust: Competing Sites Of Memory And *Representation., Marla Beth Morris Jan 1999

Curriculum And The Holocaust: Competing Sites Of Memory And *Representation., Marla Beth Morris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Curriculum theory is a call to understanding. My call as a curriculum theorist is to attempt to understand work around the Holocaust. This study examines the ways in which the Holocaust gets represented in texts written by historians as well as texts written by novelists. I argue that memory is the larger category under which history is subsumed; history is the systematization of memory. Although historians draw on archives and are constrained by their discipline, nevertheless they operate out of their own memories. Psychological transference, repression, denial, projection and reversal shape historians' memories and therefore determine, to a certain extent, …
