The goal of this thesis was to develop a program for the UNLV Residence Hall Recycling & Reuse Program for Move-In and Move-Out that would collect unwanted and unneeded materials from the residents and put them to use. Move-In collected cardboard boxes for recycling while Move-Out collected usable items such as shoes, clothes, food, bedding, and school supplies for resale. In order to have a good collection turnout, a combination of advertising and resident and staff education was conducted. Letters were sent to Resident Assistants (RA’s) and Complex Coordinators and posters and other advertisements were placed in high traffic areas …

Factors Affecting Participation In Senior Center Programs, Betty J. Jefferson

This study investigated whether the factors of relationships, recreation, relatedness, and reward would affect participation in senior centers. Demographic variables of age, sex, and socio-economic status and enabling variables of health, transportation, and income were also investigated. Data were collected from a sample of 57 older adults (aged 55 and over) from three Las Vegas Senior Centers using an instrument developed by the investigator. Findings revealed that relationships, recreation, and relatedness contributed to reasons for participation. Rewards did not seem to affect participation. In terms of demographics, more participants tended to be older, female, and educated. Enabling variables revealed participants …

The Las Vegas Monorail project is the first and quite possibly the only private sector endeavor to construct mass transit grade transportation at no cost to the taxpayer, and with no public sector investment, subsidy, or guarantee. Examining Specialized Drug Courts: An Evaluation Of The Las Vegas Drug Court Treatment Program, Erin Nicole Reese

Developed in response to overcrowded jails and backlogged court dockets, drug courts use comprehensive treatment and graduated sanctions to deal with drug offenders. This study evaluates the Las Vegas Drug Court in terms of its effectiveness in reducing recidivism by comparing data for drug court cases with drug cases not processed in the drug court. The results indicate that recidivism rates for drug court participants are significantly higher than for non-drug court participants. These findings suggest that further research should be conducted about the impact and utility of drug courts.

Permits allowing qualified citizens to legally carry a concealed weapon ("CCWs") in public have become increasingly popular. Nevada adopted more lenient CCW standards in October of 1995, and an unprecedented number of legally armed citizens in the public has resulted. Supporters of CCWs claim the right to self-defense with less crime resulting. Room oversupply is a recent concern for Las Vegas gaming industry. The purpose of this research is to quantify this problem and try to determine whether room oversupply exists and if it does, how serious the problem is in the lodging market of Las Vegas casino hotels (the subject market). A room inventory model is developed for estimating the optimal room inventory of the subject market. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between weight oriented job pressure and bulimic symptomatology among female Las Vegas production show dancers. Surveys were distributed to approximately 100 dancers at the professional level in the Las Vegas area at the professional dance and Pilates studios as well as backstage at two of the shows. The surveys measured perceived weight oriented job pressure, body dissatisfaction in response to weight oriented job pressure, and differences in self-reported attribution between symptomatic bulimic and non-bulimic dancers. Problem gambling behaviors among the adult population in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada are analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Responses to problem gambling questions from 1992 and 1995 telephone surveys are examined. On the 1992 survey, which focused on lifetime problem gambling behaviors, 5.8% of local residents indicated that they had a gambling problem. On the 1995 survey, which inquired about past-year gambling problems, 6.6% of the local population indicated that they had a gambling problem. The observed concentrations of the monoaromatic hydrocarbons and aldehydes show significant correlations within the various monoaromatic hydrocarbons, and within the various aldehydes as well as between the two groups of compounds. Moderate or good correlations between observed concentrations of target analytes, monoaromatic hydrocarbons and aldehydes, and other pollutants, CO, NO, NO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} were also found. These observations are consistent with vehicle emission as a major source of monoaromatic hydrocarbons and a primary source of aldehydes in ambient air; CO normalized concentrations were used to infer the occurrence of photochemical reactions in atmosphere. By researching legalized prostitution in Las Vegas from an economic and social standpoint as opposed to just a moral perspective, a broader picture emerged to show the changes that occurred. This study is an empirical test of Durkheim's theory of suicide. Durkheim's 1897 theory holds that suicide is caused not by environmental or physiological forces, but by social forces, which either push to the individual to take his or her own life, or fail to prevent suicidal behavior; The population from which the data were gathered for this study was the Las Vegas homeless population. The lack of social bonds and social integration, which Durkheim found to be related to suicide, are generally present in homeless persons.
