Effects Of Student Self-Management On Generalization Of Student Performance To Regular Classes, Lloyd Douglas Peterson May 1999

Effects Of Student Self-Management On Generalization Of Student Performance To Regular Classes, Lloyd Douglas Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of a student self-monitoring and self-rating/teacher matching strategy to assist generalization of social skills use and decrease off-task behavior of five inner-city at-risk middle school students was investigated. A multiple-baseline design was used to assess the effects of the intervention in up to six different class settings. Results indicated that the self-monitoring and self-rating/teacher matching intervention led to an increase in correct social skills use and a decrease in off-task behaviors with all five students. These data add to the existing literature, suggesting self-monitoring with self-rating/teacher matching is an effective procedure to promote generalization of behavior. Implications for …

Regional Economic Effects Of Wilderness Designations In Six Western States, Marca L. Hagenstad May 1999

Regional Economic Effects Of Wilderness Designations In Six Western States, Marca L. Hagenstad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the existence of impacts on per capita incomes from the designations of wilderness areas. It developed one model to explain county-level per capita incomes in the six western states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, and Wyoming. This model examined effects of various factors believed to affect incomes, such as the industry mix of an economy, population densities, unemployment rates, government expenditures, and the existence of colleges, Indian reservations, and wilderness areas.

The analysis indicated that per capita incomes in these states did not fall by an increase in wilderness lands. In fact, counties in Utah, …

Effects Of Perceived Sugar Or Chocolate Intake On Self-Reported Food Cravings, Mood States, And Food Intake: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study, Lara J. Schultz May 1999

Effects Of Perceived Sugar Or Chocolate Intake On Self-Reported Food Cravings, Mood States, And Food Intake: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study, Lara J. Schultz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many dieters and compulsive overeaters report that sugar and chocolate are the most commonly craved foods. Further, many individuals have proclaimed themselves to be "addicted" to sugar or chocolate. It remains unclear, however, what factors lead to report of specific food addictions. A number of researchers have suggested that highly repetitive consumption of sugar and chocolate may result from various physiological processes (e.g., neurochemical imbalances, glucose/insulin malfunctioning). However, there is also considerable evidence that psychosocial factors (i.e., expectancies, classical, and operant conditioning) play the major role in the development and maintenance of excessive sugar/chocolate intake. Empirical studies examining factors that …

The Effects Of Gender And Behavior On Elementary Teachers' Attributional Assumptions About Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Lisa Rollins May 1999

The Effects Of Gender And Behavior On Elementary Teachers' Attributional Assumptions About Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Lisa Rollins

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Questionnaires compromised of (a) a description of a child (either male or female) exhibiting attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) behaviors (either predominately hyperactive/impulsive or predominately inattentive) and (b) 13 questions about the description were completed by 562 regular elementary education teachers in the state of Utah. The questions, which offered teachers a range of responses on a 5 point Likert scale, were designed to assess the extent to which the gender and behaviors of the child described affected the extent to which teachers were able to identify the child as being representative of a child with ADHD, teachers' attributional assumptions …

Living Expressions And Their Effects On Primary Recipients, Dana Lynn Galbavy Jan 1999

Living Expressions And Their Effects On Primary Recipients, Dana Lynn Galbavy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

"Living Expressions" are formal events where appreciative feelings are disclosed to a living recipient by friends and/or relatives. Effects of events on the self-esteem of recipients and recipient's relationships with disclosers were studied. Self-esteem and self-disclosure are components of personal and relational health. Living Expressions were expected to enhance self-esteem and personal relationships through self-disclosure. Living Expressions have semblance to ideas contained in eulogies, Gestalt and other therapies and group theories. Self-enhancement and self-consistency theory conflicts were considered. Social penetration theory and self-disclosure studies were reviewed. Eleven recipients were subjects in this multi-case, qualitative study. The combined self-enhancement/self-consistency theory and …

The Effects Of Catastrophizing And Labeling On Pain Tolerance, Sensation, And Affect, Otto Pedraza Jan 1999

The Effects Of Catastrophizing And Labeling On Pain Tolerance, Sensation, And Affect, Otto Pedraza

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of labeling on pain tolerance, sensation, and affect for individuals who are high or low pain catastrophizers, as measured through the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). Pasticipants completed the PCS and were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 labeling conditions: A maximizing, a minimizing, and a neutral label condition. All participants then took part in a cold-pressor test. The cold-pressor measure of pain tolerance, as well as visual analog scales of sensory and affective ratings of pain, provided the dependent measures. Participants also completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) and the Somatic Amplification Questionnaire (SAQ). …

Claiming Identity: The Effect Of The American Myth On Human Relationships In David Mamet's "American Buffalo", "Glengarry Glenn Ross", And "Speed-The-Plow", Lyn Sattazahn Jan 1999

Claiming Identity: The Effect Of The American Myth On Human Relationships In David Mamet's "American Buffalo", "Glengarry Glenn Ross", And "Speed-The-Plow", Lyn Sattazahn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

David Mamet's American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, and Speed-the-Plow explore the damage American business has done to the human spirit. The frontier myth has evolved into exploitative capitalism where competition becomes an obstacle for community and friendship. The characters in these plays try to establish and define their identities by their particular status within the business hierarchy. Unfortunately the nature of competition creates an environment in which the characters use each other's needs and vulnerabilities for their own gain. To openly express the need for love and community in this climate is to expose weakness. Fear of revealing such vulnerability …

Rodent Effects On Shrubs In A Mojave Desert Shrub Community, Steven Schuyler Vrooman Jan 1999

Rodent Effects On Shrubs In A Mojave Desert Shrub Community, Steven Schuyler Vrooman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The mounds created by many species of Dipodomys (kangaroo rats) are long-term modifications of the the soil chemical and physical environment which have been shown to increase both the diversity and abundance of annuals in the deserts of the Southwestern United States. I characterized shrub distribution and soil parameters on and off rodent mounds in a Coleogyne ramosissima community in Lucky Strike Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada and performed several experiments to investigate rodent effects on seedlings and seeds of C. ramosissima. Rodent mounds were found to be long-term modifications of the soil physical and chemical environment which support a …

Leakage Gate Current In A Heterostructure Field Effect Transistor, Amit Ranbir Mahajan Jan 1999

Leakage Gate Current In A Heterostructure Field Effect Transistor, Amit Ranbir Mahajan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical formulation for the leakage gate current in a heterostructure insulated-gate field effect transistor (HIGFET) is presented. Three important components of the leakage gate current, namely 2-D tunneling, 3-D tunneling and thermionic emission current, are considered. The conduction band edge profile of the HIGFET is obtained by a self consistent solution to the Poisson and Schroedinger equations. The transmission coefficient for 2-D and 3-D tunneling currents is obtained by solving the Schroedinger equation; The leakage gate currents are obtained as a function of the gate voltage for the AlI-nAs/GaInAs and AlGaAs/GaAs based HIGFET structures. For the AlInAs/GaInAs system, the …

Thirty-six rats were divided evenly into six groups. Two groups were surgical controls, two groups had the tibialis anterior ablated, to hypertrophy the extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and two groups the gastrocnemius and the plantaris ablated, to hypertrophy the soleus. One of each of these groups had their diet supplemented with creatine monohydrate. The size of the EDL and soleus were measured following surgical removal of the synergistic muscle and a 5-week supplementation period. Peak force, …

Pro-Social And Anti-Social Effects Of Television Viewing On Adolescents: Speculations Based On Family Situation Comedy Content, Eunette Gentry Jan 1999

Pro-Social And Anti-Social Effects Of Television Viewing On Adolescents: Speculations Based On Family Situation Comedy Content, Eunette Gentry

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Researchers theorize that verbal insults within television family interactions may create images of dysfunctional families that serve as a paradigm for young viewers. This study conducted a content analysis of television programming and speculated about the possible development of antisocial behavior in adolescents due to television viewing; "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne" were chosen in this research sample because previous research finds that family oriented situation comedies are among children's favorite television programs. Ten episodes of each series were recorded and analyzed for their anti-social verbal content. The brother-sister sibling relationship was analyzed within each episode and coded using eight …

Garfield County Resident Perceptions Of The Indirect Effects Of The 2002 Winter Olympics, Cary Michael Deccio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined rural resident perceptions of a nearby mega-event. Tourism leaders can gauge resident perceptions and thereby plan development in conjunction with the local people, not in spite of them; It is anticipated that the 2002 Winter Olympics will have some impact on Garfield County, Utah. Using social exchange theory, the study sought to better understand public sentiment regarding the upcoming mega-event. Certain resident values were examined in relation to tourism; The results show that some residents perceive that the Olympics will bring opportunities, but most residents do not anticipate any impact from the event. Residents who are economically …

United States Business Travelers' Response To Price Changes And Overbooking: Its Effect On Intentional Loyalty In The Hospitality Industry, Nicholas Jee Gordon Jan 1999

United States Business Travelers' Response To Price Changes And Overbooking: Its Effect On Intentional Loyalty In The Hospitality Industry, Nicholas Jee Gordon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Companies that have highly perishable inventories have used yield management quite extensively over the past decade. The process helps to maximize revenues based on demand. The airline industry was the first to adopt the process into a business setting and has seen varying results along the way. Much of the existing research is geared towards examining the revenue producing potential of the system. There has been little research however, to examine how this process of shifting price to manipulate demand effects customer loyalty; This research attempts to evaluate what the effects actually are when price is used as the major …

Exploring The Role Of Service Process And Its Effect On Guest Encounter Satisfaction, Karl Joseph Mayer Jan 1999

Exploring The Role Of Service Process And Its Effect On Guest Encounter Satisfaction, Karl Joseph Mayer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The dissertation empirically investigates the area of service process using a hospitality research setting. The concept of process has previously been identified as a key element in the marketing of services. However, the area of process design has had a reduced status in services, with the result that detailed service planning remains an unexplored research area. Similarly, no empirical research appears to have been conducted that defines the dimensions of the service delivery process. This study addresses that gap by developing a general model that identifies the key dimensions of service process. The model proposes that service process can be …
