The purpose of this study was to describe the moral purposes of successful teachers. Moral purpose was defined as the values and beliefs associated with serving society and serving individuals other than oneself Key informant interviews were conducted with the 18 finalists for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Interviewees, were asked four basic questions: (1) Why did you choose teaching as a career? (2) How would you describe your moral purpose in teaching? (3) Has your moral purpose changed over time? Reflections Of Reflections Of Reflections: A Multi-Case Study Of Women Educators' Callings To The High Arctic, Judith Knapp Edd

This study examines the stories of six women educators who were called to teach in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northwest Territories, Canada, from 1970 to 1985. Placed within a historical context, I set out to understand what called each educator to teach in a cultural context so different from her own in Canada's Arctic. In order to arrive at a deeper, more intrinsic understanding of her career decisions, I explored each educators calling through three, increasingly deeper levels of reflection. Success as a school administrator strongly depends upon the complex interplay of teacher cognitive style, teacher satisfaction on the job, and the effectiveness of the principal's administrative management style. Nonetheless, the supervision of teachers within their cognitive style has had little research or attention given to it. According to the literature, administrative management style greatly influences teachers perceptions of satisfaction on the job. This study focused on the learning to teach process of a beginning kindergarten teacher in the area of literacy through the investigation of her pedagogical content knowledge. Shulman (1986) described pedagogical content knowledge as "the ways of representing and formulating the subject that make it comprehensible to others" (p. 9). The purpose of the study was to explore how this teacher transformed her knowledge of literacy into pedagogy for the diverse students she taught. The focus of this study was to explore the changes in literacy practice that occurred as two intermediate teachers attempted to implement an intervention model within their literacy instruction. There were two participants in this study, Mrs. Bailey, a fourth-grade teacher in her twelfth year of teaching, and Mrs. Cook, a third-grade teacher in her twenty-eighth year of teaching. Multiple data sources including interviews, observations, descriptive self-report items, reflective journal entries, lesson plans, and exit slips and evaluation forms were collected. The degree of validity of various teacher evaluation systems in the Church Educational System (CES) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been questioned. Despite several administrative and scholarly attempts, there has been an absence of an accepted set of dimensions for such measurement. In an effort to specify the desirable attributes and practices of religious educators, CES administrators have defined six CES values and seven principles of edification. This qualitative study explored a different type of leadership by investigating leadership among peers in a California School Leadership Team (SLT). Using a phenomenological approach, the researcher asked ten teachers to describe their experience as members and as leaders in a schoolwide change team. The teachers characterized the SLT as: a positive force in the school, a vehicle for communication, and a support group. They described the experience as: eye opening, unique, challenging, and transforming.
