This study investigated the impact of cocurricular activities on leadership development. College graduates recognized as community leaders were selected from three communities in Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Through survey and interview techniques, the leaders were asked to reflect on high school and college experiences that led to their development as leaders. The study included a focus on differences in experiences of male and female leaders. Developmental influences such as family, mentors, global experience, and the cocurricular activities engaged in during high school and college were explored. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the nature, scope, and consequences of drug and alcohol use by students enrolled at three southern Appalachian community colleges: Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) in Virginia, Northeast State Technical Community College (NSTCC) in Tennessee, and Southwestern Community College (SCC) in North Carolina. In the study, the population of educators in 21st Century Classrooms across the State of Tennessee was surveyed to determine teachers' satisfaction with 21st Century program implementation and associated changes in instructional practices. During fall 1998, six hundred of the 4,800 21st century classroom teachers were surveyed using the Technology Use Questionnaire. Three hundred two completed surveys were returned. Frequency rates and percentages were calculated for each of the 33 questions and the 8 demographic items. The media during the past ten years has given considerable attention to the workplace violence in factories, service organizations, and the public school systems throughout the United States. This study compared patterns of workplace violence in the 23 member institutions of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) with the patterns of workplace violence in selected for-profit service and manufacturing employers in Virginia, to determine if workplace violence incidents occurring in the VCCS's member institutions reflect the workplace violence incidents experienced by business and industry within each member institution's service region. The purpose of this study was to portray the experiences of African-American tenured female faculty employed within Historically White, public institutions of higher education in Virginia. This study is a portrait of the career paths, teaching experiences, institutional experiences, community and personal activities, work life, and the future of African-Americans. The study focused on personal experiences and provided a grounded recording for other African-American female faculty members employed within comparable institutions of higher education. This study examined assistant principals' perceptions regarding their beliefs concerning actual involvement and ideal involvement with competencies identified by the Tennessee State Department of Education as evaluative measures for principals and assistant principals employed in public schools in the State of Tennessee during the 1996-1997 school year. This study examined the attributes contracting managers perceived to be most critical in effective contracting officers. Questionnaires were used to gather relevant data from managers in the operational, specialized, and systems contracting specialty areas. The resultant data was classified and weighted in accordance with the formula defined in the methodology. Additionally, some respondents provided comments via the follow-up interviews. This study examines the effectiveness of the Circle of Friends (COF) program in improving social skills of elementary students using 3 case studies. Social skills groups utilized a cognitive-behavioral approach and problem solving sessions. Groups were heterogeneous in nature, including regular education and special education students. This chronic illness requires continuing medical care and education to prevent acute exacerbations and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. The study looked at the teacher attitudes of job satisfaction, job adjustment, and socialization into the profession of teaching. This study examines the effects on third grade urban students when taught the social studies curriculum integrated with discipline-based arts curriculum. Three students were randomly chosen to represent high, moderate, and low ability levels. This is a qualitative research project using a triangulation of data, namely observation, interview, and analysis of products. The findings suggest that the integration of a discipline-based arts curriculum with a social studies curriculum enhances student learning, interest, and production. This method also allows students and teachers to identify learning styles and specific intelligences.

This study investigated sixth-grade students' academic and personal responses to self-selection in the spelling curriculum. Student participants were from a public elementary school classroom located in a Midwest urban school district. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods of a non-emergent design was used. The students were considered as one group using an A-B-A research format, and as eleven independent case participants.
