Investigation Of Biodegradation Processes In Solid Waste Landfills, Philip A. Colborn
Investigation Of Biodegradation Processes In Solid Waste Landfills, Philip A. Colborn
Theses and Dissertations
Greater demands on landfill capacity, stricter regulations intended to minimize landfill environmental impacts, and the economic potential associated with landfill operations have shifted the emphasis of landfill disposal toward methods concerned with the long term performance and capacity of landfills. Two opposing philosophies have emerged in constructing and managing landfills: the dry tomb and the wet cell. The key to managing a landfill from the wet cell viewpoint is first understanding the biodegradation processes occurring within the landfill. This thesis attempts to determine the fundamental processes responsible for the degradation of solid waste by employing a system dynamics approach. A …
Endogenous Alkylglycerol Functions As A Mediator Of Protein Kinase C Activity And Cell Proliferation, Fritz G. Buchanan
Endogenous Alkylglycerol Functions As A Mediator Of Protein Kinase C Activity And Cell Proliferation, Fritz G. Buchanan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To explore the possibility that 1-O-alkyl-sn-glycerol (alkylglycerol) may serve a regulatory role in the control of cell proliferation or PKC activity, we examined the ability of alkylglycerol to influence PKC activity and subcellular distribution as well as the ability of alkylglycerol to effect cell proliferation. MDCK cells grown to confluence show a loss of PKC activity associated with the membrane, as reported in fibroblasts. Preconfluent cultures of MDCK cells have a high level of PKC activity associated with the membrane. However, treatment of preconfluent cultures with alkylglycerol causes a reduction of PKC activity. A similar inhibition was observed with alkylglycerol …

Reductive Precipitation Of Uranium By Free And Immobilized Cells And Cell Fractions Of Facultative And Anaerobic Bacteria., Boyce Lamont Clark
Reductive Precipitation Of Uranium By Free And Immobilized Cells And Cell Fractions Of Facultative And Anaerobic Bacteria., Boyce Lamont Clark
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the interaction between two genera of bacteria and the biochemical reduction of uranium. The bacteria studied are the obligate anaerobe, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, and the facultative aerobe, Escherichia coli. Preliminary experiments established the pH, cell concentration, substrate concentration, and type of substrate that favored reduction of hexavalent uranium in aqueous solutions. Uranium reduction is most complete at pH 7 and 9, with cell concentrations of at least 33.5 mg/ml (dry cell weight). Whole cells of D. desulfuricans were found to reduce uranium in the presence of lactate and hydrogen whereas in E. coli, reduction was achieved only in …
Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva
Cloning, Sequencing And Regulation Of The Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemh Gene., Ekaterina Vladislavova Kanazireva
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacterium, synthesizes four tetrapyrrole end products: heme, bacteriochlorophyll, siroheme and vitamin B$\sb{12}$ via the common tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway. The biosynthesis of tetrapyrroles in R. capsulatus is a complex and precisely controlled process which has been under extensive investigation. In order to study the regulation of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, the R. capsulatus hemH gene was cloned by complementation of an E. coli $\Delta hemH$ mutant and sequenced. The enzyme ferrochelatase, encoded by the hemH gene, catalyzes the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX, thus producing heme. The consensus ferrochelatase signature sequence was found in the …
