This is a biography of Reverend William Hamilton, Presbyterian missionary to the American Indians for over fifty years. Female-Made Order In The Works Of Kaye Gibbons, Lee Ann Dugan Mar 1994

Female-Made Order In The Works Of Kaye Gibbons, Lee Ann Dugan

Honors Theses

Kaye Gibbons, a contemporary Southern writer, attracted almost immediate attention with the publication of her first novel Ellen Foster in 1987. Awarded the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters' Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, Ellen Foster was warmly received by both the critics and the public. According to Alice Hoffman, readers trust Ellen Foster even though her misfortunes border on the Gothic, and they anxiously follow her adventures because Gibbons "focuses on Ellen's strengths rather than her victimization, presenting a heroine who rescues herself" (13). Telling her story as if she were "her own maker and redeemer," …

Upon my arrival on earth. Mother forbad me from doing two things: going to K-Mart and talking to my Uncle Ike.

Ironically, the first word I learned to read was "K-Mart.” Mother pointed out the store every time we drove past. She told me many times of the evil that could befall a person if he entered its doors. I reckoned she knew all about K-Mart because she claimed to have gone there twice before I was born. Based on the two visits, Mother decided that the voice of the blue-light special masked some sinister, subliminal message. While everyone else …

Palmerston, Parliament And Peking: The Melbourne Ministry And The Opium Crisis, 1835-1840., Glenn Paul Melancon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

"Palmerston, Parliament and Peking" is a revisionist work designed to challenge the prevailing economic interpretations of the first Opium War, 1839-1842. Orthodox historiography considers early nineteenth-century Britain as a modern, industrial society and argues that its Government needed to respond violently to the Chinese authorities' suppression of the opium trade in order to protect and expand a lucrative endeavor. Indian opium sales generated revenue for the British-run government in Bengal and paid for Chinese tea, a highly prized commodity in Great Britain. British industrialists demanded war to end the Chinese Government's restrictions on trade, known as the Canton system, thus …

"A Handsomely Improved Place" : Economic, Social, And Gender-Role Development In A Backcountry Town, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 1750-1810, Judith A. Ridner

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

As a social history of the town and people of Carlisle, Pennsylvania from 1750 to 1810, this dissertation traces the evolution of communal identity in the early American backcountry. By focusing on the growth and development of one urban community, this work details not only how and why one group of backcountry inhabitants took pride in their town's outward accomplishments and material prosperity, but also explains how Carlisle's evolutionary growth prompted the town's people to see themselves as key players in an economic and social universe that stretched far beyond the geographic boundaries of their localized realm.;Using state and county …

The Alien World Within: The Political, Cultural And Geographical Marginalisation Of Northern England In Shakespeare's Second Tetralogy, Graham Cattle

Theses : Honours

This paper considers Shakespeare's representation of the north of England in his second tetralogy of history plays. In this study, I argue that the plays are not only a representation of the past, but an expression of the political, cultural and geographical divisions within England in the era of their production. Drawing on contemporary reports from the region, official papers, ballads and various modern histories of the age, I will suggest that there exists a direct correlation between Shakespeare's representation of the region and the concept of the north as the alien element within Elizabethan England. Reading the plays as …

Iowa's Wolf In Populist Clothing: Norman Baker, 1925-1936, Eric Scott Juhnke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During the depression years of the late 1920s and 1930s, Muscatine, Iowa's Norman Baker stood as both a powerful and controversial figure in rural eastern Iowa. Baker's successful business empire, which at its height included a radio station, mail order enterprise, newspaper, magazine, and a cancer quackery hospital, earned the Muscatine tycoon millions of dollars in revenue over the course of a decade. Despite this business success, Baker's brash personality, vituperative broadcasting style, and fraudulent medical claims were subjects of constant controversy.

Considering both Baker's suspect reputation and the poor agricultural conditions of the day, the question remains: How did …
