The Impact Of The Global Economy: An Analysis Of Foreign Language Study In The United States., Kazumi Kimura Nov 1993

The Impact Of The Global Economy: An Analysis Of Foreign Language Study In The United States., Kazumi Kimura

Student Work

An examination of global forces helps us to understand how school curricula in a nation are shaped. This emphasis on global forces is important especially when we deal with foreign languages as a school subject, because the study of foreign languages, unlike other school subjects, is more likely to be influenced by world political and economic situations. This study is designed to examine what impact the emergence of the new economic order, or global economy, has brought on language study in the United States. The impact of economic transformation will be measured by analyzing language enrollments at various educational levels, …

Conflicting Partial Paradigms: An Analysis Of Stratification Articles, 1953-1990, Kaj E. Williams May 1993

Conflicting Partial Paradigms: An Analysis Of Stratification Articles, 1953-1990, Kaj E. Williams

Student Work

This thesis addresses the relevance of paradigms to the field of social stratification. Social stratification articles appearing in the American Sociological Review and the American Journal of Sociology from the years 1953-1990 are analyzed. The results provide evidence for a multiplicity of paradigms within the field. A life cycle model for paradigm development is proposed to account for the changes exhibited by the paradigms. I suggested that paradigms go through four stages and that movement through each stage is caused by interactions between the paradigms. Similarities and differences to Kuhn's original paradigm concept are emphasized, and suggestions are provided for …

Adapting To Retention: A Naturalistic Study Revealing The Coping Resources Of Nonpromoted Students And Their Parents, Robbie J. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to uncover the feelings and reactions of students and their parents in regard to the nonpromotion experience. Families with children who had been retained at least once in grades one through eight were purposefully selected as units of study from one of four area school systems. A total of 52 family members from 22 family units participated in 46 separate, qualitative interviews. The information collected from the interviews was inductively analyzed. Building upon Schlossberg's theory for human adaptation to transitions, seven factors or coping resources emerged from the data that affected the adaptation of …

The Sociology Of Plants, Julie L. Welch Stuehser Feb 1993

The Sociology Of Plants, Julie L. Welch Stuehser

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of this research is to assess the link between plants, people, and performance. Several studies have suggested that plants in a social environment will change the behavior of the people in their vicinity (Relf, 1990, 1992; Bryant, 1992).

An Analysis Of North Sea Oil Development And Scottish Island Youth: Postmaterialism As An Identifiable And Measurable Dimension, John Alan Anderson Jan 1993

An Analysis Of North Sea Oil Development And Scottish Island Youth: Postmaterialism As An Identifiable And Measurable Dimension, John Alan Anderson

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines opinions and attitudes of high school age youth living in the Shetland and Orkney islands and explores aspects of rapid growth associated with North Sea oil development. Only a minimal amount of research regarding post-impacts and rapid growth appears in the literature. Studies that do exist lack in theory and methodological consistency. This study draws ideas from mainstream sociology, Social Impact Assessment (SIA), Quality of Life (QoL) and Inglehart's materialism/postmaterialism to develop a working theory of social values and rapid growth. This study further reviews and applies six methodological considerations useable in future SIA, QoL, or boomtown …

The Social Construction Of Occupational Opportunity In Canada: A Case Study Of Chinese Graduate Students At The University Of Windsor (Ontario)., Qingping. Bai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary objectives of this research were to (1) examine perceptions of the Chinese graduate students from mainland China, at the University of Windsor, about the openness of the Canadian occupational structure; and (2) examine the factors that contribute and shape these perceptions. In order to understand the characteristics of the perceptions about Canada formed after the subjects have resided in Canada for a while, the perceptions about Canada as imagined prior to their arrival and perceptions about China were also examined. It is argued that the results of the research show that the willingness and the ability to interact …

The Split Of The United Automobile Workers Union And The Study Of Bureaucratic Organization., George Arthur. Johnson Jan 1993

The Split Of The United Automobile Workers Union And The Study Of Bureaucratic Organization., George Arthur. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical development of the bureaucratic structure of the United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers International Union (UAW) and its relationship with its Canadian arm. In doing so, particular emphasis is placed on the manner in which the American union bureaucracy exercised dominance and control over the Canadian sector of the UAW. The majority of the working class, in a condition of bureaucratic control, will always be under the dominance of a small minority of leaders. The analytical framework used in this work is constructed around an understanding of industrial trade unions as a social force …

Worksite Health Promotion In America: The Impact Of Organizational Context On Corporate Wellness Programming., Neller Ree Simpkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to examine the factors associated with corporate wellness programming in contemporary U.S. business organizations. First, I construct an ideal-type of wellness program components in order to profile varying arrays (i.e., number and types) of health and fitness activities across corporations. Then, I detail the extent of health promotion programming in business organizations and in major corporations, using the National Survey of Worksite Health Promotion Activities and the Worksite Health Promotion Program Survey of Fortune 500 companies. The central research task of this study is to explore the factors that account for the diversity observed …

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner Jan 1993

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Lower-track high school students' combination of poor reading comprehension, present time orientation and shortened temporal integration is an area that has been identified in a range of divergent literature, but little studied in terms of educational practice. Previous research into time orientation and temporal integration has failed to investigate a connection with reading comprehension. Purpose. The purpose was to determine if there is a relationship between time orientation, temporal integration, reading achievement/high school track level and reading comprehension. Procedures. Two measures, a Time Orientation Questionnaire and a Cloze Test of Reading Comprehension, previously identified and pilot tested, were employed. …

A Q Method Study Of How Women Of Chinese Descent Construct Themselves In Relation To Popular Stereotypes Of Chinese Women., Terry S. C. Chow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the self-perception of Chinese women, with respect to two popular stereotypes of Chinese women (the "China Doll" and the "Dragon Lady"), in the context of their most recent dating experience with a white male and how these women feel their dating partners perceive them with respect to the same stereotypes. Through the use of a Q sort study, 38 volunteer subjects sorted into four factors and one opposing view of how Chinese women perceived themselves and how they felt their dating partners perceived them. Differences among perceptions were analyzed using SPSSx (1986). Of the 38 Q sort …

The Violence Of Capitalist Development And Underdevelopment: The Impact On Poor Women's Lives In India., Gurwinder. Chaggar Jan 1993

The Violence Of Capitalist Development And Underdevelopment: The Impact On Poor Women's Lives In India., Gurwinder. Chaggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The deterioration in the life conditions of poor women in India, particularly in rural areas, is often dismissed as the lack of 'modernity', their experiences being subsumed under 'modernization/integrationist' perspectives. The view taken in this thesis is that the destruction of self-sufficient and self-sustaining means of production under British colonial rule and the post-colonial State has impoverished small-scale peasant households. Under such conditions poor women are bearing the brunt of poverty because they must often undertake various types of work and services in order to ensure the day-to-day survival of their families. The intensification in their workburden, inadequate nutrition, and …

Is This Sticky Stuff Really Love? A Q-Methodological Study Of How Teenage Females In The 1990s Create Meaning And Understand Sexuality., Jennifer Berdine. Airey Jan 1993

Is This Sticky Stuff Really Love? A Q-Methodological Study Of How Teenage Females In The 1990s Create Meaning And Understand Sexuality., Jennifer Berdine. Airey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how a local group of 15 and 16 year old young women understand and give meaning to their own, as well as other teenage females', sexuality. Two distinct views are featured. First, the specific value system of the analysts of a 'deviance' approach to female teenage sexuality which depict female teenage sexuality as wrong, deviant, dangerous, and in need of control. And second, the social constructionist view which questions these values and depictions of sexuality as well as the myriad of values and behaviours that also exist. This research agrees with the theory of social constructionism that …

Development, Culture And Cattle (Re)Production In The Context Of Neoliberalism: A Case Study From Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica., Brian. Hilbers Jan 1993

Development, Culture And Cattle (Re)Production In The Context Of Neoliberalism: A Case Study From Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica., Brian. Hilbers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I examine household (re)production within the framework of the neoliberal economic and political policies as they have been, and continue to be experienced by small and medium sized cattle ranchers within the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. In so doing, this analysis moves away from purely macro, structural and economic analysis of development, which have long been held as the principle unit of discourse within the various attempts to come to grips with theories of development. To do this I argue that by placing an analysis of culture and hegemony within the wider framework of development theory …

Issues In Native Policing: A Critical Examination (Native Canadians)., Tonio. Sadik Jan 1993

Issues In Native Policing: A Critical Examination (Native Canadians)., Tonio. Sadik

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the development of Native policing in Canada. Through a combination of archival and field research, it: (1) demonstrates the degree to which Native communities have been obliged to rely on the "crime control" model of policing; and (2) underscores the need for such communities to find alternatives to this model which does not adequately meet their needs. A critique of the contemporary model of policing (termed "crime-control"), and an examination of the four primary models used in regard to Native policing, provides the foundation for a specific inquiry into one Native community's struggle towards autonomy in policing. …

The Dynamics Of Collective Farming: A Case Study Of Fish Farm Cooperatives In The Prefectures Of Butare And Gikongoro, Rwanda., Alphonse Rubagumya Jan 1993

The Dynamics Of Collective Farming: A Case Study Of Fish Farm Cooperatives In The Prefectures Of Butare And Gikongoro, Rwanda., Alphonse Rubagumya

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cooperative fish farming not only insures a wider distribution of land and fish farming technology resources to larger segments of the population, but also makes possible the integration of limited individual resources into sizable and economically more viable production and marketing units. On the basis that more efficient internal organization can lead to greater cooperative performance, the purpose of this study is to identify organizational attributes and practices associated with effectiveness of fish farming cooperatives in Rwanda. Data for the study were obtained from a sample of 200 fish farm groups selected in the prefectures of Butare and Gikongoro, Rwanda. …

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah Jan 1993

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah

Digitized Theses

The dissertation aims to tie together the empirical, theoretical and policy oriented aspects dealing with the dynamics of morbidity and mortality in Africa. On the theoretical aspect, scholars are arguing that the epidemiologic transition theory which provided the framework for understanding African mortality in the past, is actually part of a broader health transition theory which also includes a health care transition. In this theory, the overemphasis on biomedical interventions is down-played. To understand African mortality, it is argued, we have to consider the social and cultural determinants. Also we have to consider morbidity and its relationship to mortality. This …

Relative Risks And Tempo Of Childbearing In Early Birth Intervals: A Comparative Study Of The Dominican Republic And Trinidad And Tobago, Bernard Godfrey St

Digitized Theses

This study explains and compares the variations in the relative risks and tempo of first, second and third order births among women from the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago. In Trinidad and Tobago, Indians have unique cultural traditions that are known to affect their fertility behaviour. Thus, the study also focuses on the Indian and Non-Indian women from Trinidad and Tobago.;Data are obtained from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) that were conducted in the Dominican Republic during 1986 and in Trinidad and Tobago during 1987. A standard core questionnaire permitted comparisons between the fertility behaviour of women from …

The results of this study are based on the experiences of five married couples. The specific focus of this research study is: To what extent do the husband's reactions to his wife being sexually assaulted, help or hinder her recovery from the assault? As such, the primary goals within this examination are: First, to discover what the marriage relationship was like prior to the sexual assault; second, to articulate both the husband's …

Differentials And Determinants Of Fertility Behaviour In Bolivia, David Ernesto Vidal-Zeballos Jan 1993

Differentials And Determinants Of Fertility Behaviour In Bolivia, David Ernesto Vidal-Zeballos

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines differentials and determinants of fertility behaviour for the Bolivian population, focusing on the biological, behavioural, economic, social and cultural factors that directly and indirectly affect reproductive behaviour among the three ecological strata (Highlands, Valleys and Lowlands) and two spatial contexts (Urban and Rural). Moreover, the measurement, description and explanation of these factors at the individual and aggregated levels, and the link between the two levels of analysis has been attempted to examine the interrelationship among proximate determinants, microeconomic variables--cost regulation and motivational cost--modernization and cultural variables, and to understand the differentials in fertility. To do this study, …

Determinants Of Early Childbearing Among Young Female Adults In The Gambia, Momodou S. Jeng Jan 1993

Determinants Of Early Childbearing Among Young Female Adults In The Gambia, Momodou S. Jeng

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the determinants of childbearing among young Gambian women aged 13 to 24 and ranks the respective components (or groups of variables) in order of importance. An empirical analysis is done using bivariate and multi-variate statistical techniques. Based on these analyses, it is found that the factors of the empirical model (combining the reference group theory and a Bongaarts-type framework) vary in their effect on the fertility of young women. The most important of the socioeconomic, demographic and cultural (SEDC) variables are educational attainment, employment status, looking for work, area of residence, age, number of siblings, rank of …

The Quantum And Tempo Of Childbearing In Iran, Before And After The Islamic Revolution, Mohammad Karim Mansoorian Jan 1993

The Quantum And Tempo Of Childbearing In Iran, Before And After The Islamic Revolution, Mohammad Karim Mansoorian

Digitized Theses

This study presents an analysis of demographic, socio-economic and environmental characteristics that may influence the quantum and timing of first, second and third births among Iranian women. This study focuses on the role that these variables played in influencing the fertility behaviour before, during and after the Islamic Revolution. The birth history data gathered by the 1988 Pars Province Growth Rate Survey-Iran are used in this study. An in-depth fertility questionnaire permits comparisons before and after the Islamic Revolution. The sample contains 2511 ever married women aged 15 years and above. Since these women have different marriage experience that can …

Educational Attainment And Timing Of Childbearing Among Recent Cohorts Of Canadian Women, Wit Margaret De Jan 1993

Educational Attainment And Timing Of Childbearing Among Recent Cohorts Of Canadian Women, Wit Margaret De

Digitized Theses

This research examines factors associated with the timing and risk of first and second births in Canada, focusing primarily on the role of women's educational attainment. A major theme is that fundamental changes in recent years, not only in the duration of education, but also in the content and social significance of formal schooling, have resulted in changes in the strength and nature of the basic association across successive birth cohorts of women. The Accelerated Failure Time Model (AFT) is applied to data from the 1984 Canadian Fertility Survey (CFS) in order to determine how educational attainment, estimated as closely …

Reproductive Individualism And Divorce: An Examination Of Attitudes And Marriage Dissolution In Canada, David Roy Hall Jan 1993

Reproductive Individualism And Divorce: An Examination Of Attitudes And Marriage Dissolution In Canada, David Roy Hall

Digitized Theses

In documenting the dramatic increase in divorce in recent decades, several observers have uncovered strong empirical associations between religiosity and marriage dissolution. As well, many studies show a substantial relationship between premarital cohabitation and the risk of divorce.;What is it about religiosity and cohabitation that explains these statistical links to divorce? The main objective of this inquiry was to answer this question by placing marriage dissolution within a sociological framework. Building on concepts and ideas developed in the sociological theory of Anthony Giddens, it was argued that the recent proliferation of "expert systems" of knowledge and technology in the area …
