Teacher Training And Certification: A Comparative Analysis Between State And National Licensure Procedures And The Impending Effects Of The Proposed National Certificate, Paulus R. West

Student Work

Today, public confidence in our educational system has eroded to a very low level. Many people do not believe that education in America serves its purpose. Some believe American education leaves vast room for improvement. Like any other service-orientated entity, schools are constantly battling dilemmas like budget-cutting, scandals of mismanagement, and tales of political cronyism. Success stories, especially in public education, seem to be the exception rather than the rule. This is evidenced as parents flock to place their children in institutions publicized as being above the norm. Endless news reports of declining test scores and higher illiteracy rates often …

The respondents were 66 department chairs and 156 faculty from 12 comprehensive institutions in the South. Data on faculty readiness were …

The purpose of this study was to examine the academic leadership as portrayed in the American academic novel from 1950 to 1990. Leadership positions from higher education (president, vice-president, dean, and chairperson) were examined in this analysis of 40 academic fiction novels. The leader behavior of the selected characters was classified, using the following categories: autocratic (telling), democratic (selling), participative (participating), delegative (delegating), situational (varying) and "other" (unclassifiable due to lack of information or criteria variance). The finding was that the majority of academic leaders, in the novels studied, behaved using an autocratic (telling) leadership behavior. Also, the majority of …

The Relationship Between The Formal Study Of A Second Language And The Geographic Knowledge Of High School Students, Cynthia L. Berve Nov 1991

The Relationship Between The Formal Study Of A Second Language And The Geographic Knowledge Of High School Students, Cynthia L. Berve

Student Work

The geographic skills and knowledge base of many Americans are not as strong as reported by several major geographic knowledge studies in the past few years. (Barrows, 1981; Boyer, 1983; The Gallup Organization, 1988.) Geographic knowledge is one component of the cultural emphasis of second language learning. therefore, one place to examine geographic knowledge is with second language students. The hypothesis tested is that there is a significant difference in geographic knowledge between high school students who study a second language and students who have not studied a second language.

Personnel Staff Attitudes Toward The Employment Of Persons With Physical Disability, Mental Retardation, Or Mental Illness, Karol Ruth Oldenburg

Student Work

This thesis describes a measurement of personnel staff attitudes and perceptions toward the employability of disabled job applicants. More specifically, direct comparisons among three types of disability categories were made using Osgood's Semantic Scaling Method. Sixty employment professionals of the Lincoln Human Resources Management Association rated a job applicant with physical disability, with mental retardation, and one with mental illness on the basis of 15 paired opposite adjectives. These adjectives described a variety of attributes which could be grouped into evaluative, potency, and activity dimensions of semantic space. Respondents completed a four-page questionnaire which rated physically disabled, mentally retarded, and …

Canadian Federal Policy Towards Indian Education Since Confederation: Policy Making And Its Philosophy, Ling Yang Aug 1991

Canadian Federal Policy Towards Indian Education Since Confederation: Policy Making And Its Philosophy, Ling Yang

Master's Theses

Canadian Indian education is a complex problem in Canada's history. For the native people, education is the only way to preserve their cultural tradition. For the government, it has been the main means to assimilate the natives into the mainstream of the society. Because the majority culture has dominated Canadian society for more than two centuries, the Canadian federal government's policy and its making are the keys to understanding Indian education. Based on research in official records in the National Archives of Canada and field-research in Canadian Indian Reserves, this thesis shows that the federal government did not accept "Indian …

Elementary Teachers' Concerns About Teaching Science Using The Hands-On Method, Michael A. Foyt May 1991

Elementary Teachers' Concerns About Teaching Science Using The Hands-On Method, Michael A. Foyt

Student Work

As we move into the 90's, recent studies have made it very clear that the United States is falling behind both national standards and international norms in the effort to make its youth literate in science. When viewing studies that compare our students internationally, we rank near the bottom in science (Project 2061, 1989). Very few elementary teachers have an adequate science background (Stefanich & Kelsey, 1989). As a consequence, elementary science teachers teach science infrequently and often emphasize the memorization of answers rather than learning exploration skills. This type of instruction and over dependence on textbooks can actually impede …

Scheduling In The Middle School: The Effects Of Transition From A Junior High School To Middle School On Scheduling, Larry Cusic

Student Work

Middle level education bridge's the gap between elementary school and high school. The term is used to describe all programs that deal with a combinations of grades 5-9 and youngsters from 10 to 14 years of age. The effectiveness of middle level education depends upon the degree to which the schools respond to the developmental needs and characteristics of students at that age. These are the "prime" years, the years during which one's value system, one's behavior, and one's self esteem are consolidated. When the adolescent leaves the middle level school, his or her personality and personal values are largely …

This paper will examine the positive effects of indepth course work on ethnic and cultural minoritites as experienced by educators. These positive effects benefit both the educator and the student population as a whole. Racial and cultural minority students will benefit from a more positive learning environment, thus affecting self-concept and ultimately achievment. …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Magnet School Student Selection On Student Achievement And Student Attitudes Toward School, Suzanne Mrzlak Melliger Apr 1991

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Magnet School Student Selection On Student Achievement And Student Attitudes Toward School, Suzanne Mrzlak Melliger

Student Work

Magnet schools appear to be one alternative to the question of how society can desegregate the public school systems. The need to desegregate became apparent in 1954 when the Supreme Court ruled in the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education 347 US 483, 74 S.Ct. 686, 98 L.Ed. 873 (1954) landmark case that separate is not equal and public school systems must be desegregated. The magnet school is a means to achieve desegregation through voluntary choice. School systems officials charged with the task of creating alternatives, could create an attractive magnet school that was more appealing than sending children on …

Student Work

The gross percentage of Guaranteed Student Loan defaults, in 1986, was more than 20 per cant at 2,190 of the institutions participating in the Guaranteed Student Loan program. These 2,190 institutions represent more than 30 per cent of institutions participating in the program. These 2,190 institutions enrolled some 30 per cent of Guaranteed Student Loan borrowers, and these borrowers accounted for some 57 per cent of the total amount of money in default [Wilms, 1987]. Research studies have tried to offer characteristics of students who have a higher default rate on their Guaranteed Student Loans.
