The Tongue's Worth: The Use Of Language To Preserve Culture In Havelok The Dane And The Mabinogion, Robin Davidson Smith
The Tongue's Worth: The Use Of Language To Preserve Culture In Havelok The Dane And The Mabinogion, Robin Davidson Smith
Theses & Honors Papers
Most Americans are unaware of how far back the cultural dichotomy goes, its source, or how significant it is in determining our behavior. Therefore, the use of language to preserve culture in Havelok the Dane and The Mabinogion is examined. The Mabinogion and Havelok the Dane are quite different in provenance, style, and purpose; yet, there are similarities. Each work has pathos, humor, excitement, and human emotion. Most importantly, each explores the questions of who we are, what we are, what we might become, and why we are, with seriousness, sympathy, and an occasional chortle at the ridiculousness of us …
The Eucharistic Theologies Of Nineteenth Century Anglican And Lutheran Repristination Movements Compared, Jonathan Charles Naumann
The Eucharistic Theologies Of Nineteenth Century Anglican And Lutheran Repristination Movements Compared, Jonathan Charles Naumann
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The measure of congruity achieved by the independent efforts of these Lutherans and Anglicans of the nineteenth century, as they tried to repristinate purity of doctrine and orthodoxy, may constitute a superior model for modern-day ecumenical endeavours. This is especially the case if the route to Christian unity via a tolerance of contradictory doctrines around the eucharistic table threatens to collapse under the weight of its own implausibility.

Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir
Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir
Honors Papers
The first significant evidence of Blake's influence on Yeats was the three volume edition of Blake's works published by Bernard Quarich and edited by Richard Ellis and W. B. Yeats in 1893. Within the history of Blakean criticism, the volume is unique. It is the product of Ellis and Yeats's occult viewpoints combined with enthusiastic but imperfect scholarship. The first two interpretative volumes of the edition, entitled "The System" and "The Meaning," include extreme restatements of other nineteenth-century interpretations, as well as several disposable ideas that reveal more about the editors' viewpoints than Blake's own. Among the most outlandish is …
Role Duality As Represented In The Antiabolitionist Speeches Of James Shannon., Barry Cole Poyner
Role Duality As Represented In The Antiabolitionist Speeches Of James Shannon., Barry Cole Poyner
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The dissertation alleges that a speaker may juggle roles in a given rhetorical situation, what may be termed role duality. Role duality refers to a speaker's attempt to effect multiple intentions while fulfilling or partially fulfilling multiple role expectations. A purpose of this dissertation was to speculate further on the nature and function of role duality by analyzing the speeches of James Shannon. Correspondingly, another purpose was to evaluate through rhetorical criticism the pro-slavery, anti-abolitionist speeches of Shannon. Shannon (1799-1859), an evangelist in the Churches of Christ and an influential educator, delivered two principal speeches in defense of slavery: (1) …

The Anatomy Of A Best-Seller: The Making Of "Come In Spinner", Marilla North
The Anatomy Of A Best-Seller: The Making Of "Come In Spinner", Marilla North
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Although I had, like many female readers of my generation, read and re-read Come In Spinner as a teenager in the late 1950s, the book first actively engaged me in 1978 when I assisted in setting up the methodology for a market research project aimed at establishing its viability as a twentieth century film. I went on to research the biography of Florence James, one of the book's co-authors, a task I have been engaged in more intensively since late in 1986. The tentative title of that biography is The 'Spinner Years, for I became increasingly fascinated by the strong …
