Effects Of The Great Depression On Private Higher Education: Impact On Private College And University Planning, J. Michael Hostetler Dec 1989

Effects Of The Great Depression On Private Higher Education: Impact On Private College And University Planning, J. Michael Hostetler

Dissertations

Private higher education has suffered a loss of dominance in enrollment over the last four decades. Increases in tuition escalated making private higher education distinctly more expensive than options in the public sector. A sharp decline in the birth rate during the 1970s indicates there will be fewer high school graduates for private higher education to recruit. Some private colleges have already been forced to close, while others appear threatened by enrollment decline in the 1990s and beyond.

The Great Depression of the 1930s was a challenging period for the country and the academic community. To discover how private institutions …

Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams May 1989

Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Surprisingly, the importance of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries has received little attention from modern scholars. Susan Glaspell: Feminist Playwright, Anna Katherine Wiley Apr 1989

Susan Glaspell: Feminist Playwright, Anna Katherine Wiley

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Susan Glaspell, a "new woman" of the second decade of the twentieth century in America, left a valuable legacy for the feminists who would follow her. Her life and writings are examples of what women are capable of doing when given the opportunity. In both she sought to prove that women could participate in life fully--and on their own terms. A woman should not only expect Virginia Woolfs "room of her own," but should be allowed to use a mind of her own.

The event occurred in 1858, twenty-five years after Oberlin's founding. This incident was instrumental in "putting Oberlin on the map," it helped to precipitate the abolition of the Fugitive Slave Act. The legend has been associated with the better known story of the John Brown Rebellion, a contemporary historical tale that also has Oberlin origin.
