Rhythmic Out-Of-Phasedress In Olivier Messiaen's "L'Ascension Suite", Movement I, Anthony Aipperspach

Student Work

The purpose of this research is to apply the analytical technique of A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, by Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, to Olivier Messiaen's L'Ascension Suite Movement I (1934) for Organ. Application of this technique will test the working hypothesis of "Do these out-of-Phase gestures work efficiently in a conventional meter setting?"

Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams May 1989

Music And Plato In Shakespeare's Henry Iv, Part I, Kenneth R. Williams

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Surprisingly, the importance of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries has received little attention from modern scholars. Much has been written on the music which would have affected Shakespeare, but no one has focused his or her attention on Shakespeare's use of music as a dramatic device, i.e., as an aid to intensify and forward action, convey meaning, portray characters, and create atmosphere, such as a mood of mysticism or awe. In Henry IV, which I shall consider here, music as a dramatic device supports the Platonic concept of unity and the tripartite structure of both the …

An Instructional Sequence In Music Education Using Vocal And Instrumental Music Of Five World Cultures., Sophronia Lois Thomas Jan 1989

An Instructional Sequence In Music Education Using Vocal And Instrumental Music Of Five World Cultures., Sophronia Lois Thomas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The music of five non-Western cultures was incorporated in an instructional sequence for elementary grades (K)1-6. Traditional music of the Australian Aborigines and the Akan and Ewe tribes of Ghana, classical music of India, the music of the Indonesian gamelan, and Gagaku music of Japan were examined for the presence of musical concepts, the way each culture handles the concepts that are present, and the interrelationships that exist among the concepts. The music is described in terms of the musical concepts of dynamics, timbre, texture, rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. All of the concepts and their related percepts are organized …

Symphony No. 1. (Original Composition);, Mickie Denver Willis Jan 1989

Symphony No. 1. (Original Composition);, Mickie Denver Willis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal in composing this Symphony was to produce a large scale work which would have the power, impact, and audience appeal of a late Romantic orchestral work but which employed some twentieth-century techniques. The effort was to produce a composition which would not only display accomplished compositional craft but, upon performance, would generate immediate audience enthusiasm. A great deal of idiomatic diversity was used in the piece to produce a broad and varied sound experience. In much the same way that a film score is composed, this piece was crafted using whatever tonal, orchestral, or stylistic treatment would produce …

Johann Kuhnau's Hermeneutics: Rhetorical Theory And Musical Exegesis In His Works, Lora L. Matthews Jan 1989

Johann Kuhnau's Hermeneutics: Rhetorical Theory And Musical Exegesis In His Works, Lora L. Matthews

Digitized Theses

The theological changes of the Reformation were paralleled by an increasing reliance on the literal meaning of Scripture and an examination of passages in authentic languages in order to find the full resonance of each word to achieve the greatest possible emphasis; this emphasology was the principal function of the interpretation, founded on a pluralistic meaning of the text. Lutheran hermeneutes developed a common method of interpretation and format of presentation. The hermeneutical treatises written by German authors in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries have been virtually ignored by scholars of all disciplines, partly because they did not …

The Anthems Of Thomas Ford (Ca. 1580-1648)., Fang-Lan Lin Hsieh Jan 1989

The Anthems Of Thomas Ford (Ca. 1580-1648)., Fang-Lan Lin Hsieh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The twenty anthems of Thomas Ford which are kept in Oxford, Christ Church Library (Mss. 56-60 and Mss. 736-738), provide the primary material for the present study. Fourteen of those pieces are full anthems written for three-voice chorus of contratenor, tenor, and bassus. Four three-voice verse anthems are incomplete because of missing instrumental parts, and the two six-voice anthems (one is a verse anthem, the other one is full anthem) are also missing bassus parts. Ford's brief biography and a survey of his works, found in Chapter I, provide a context for the study of his anthems. Chapter II contains …

Anton Von Webern's String Quartet In A Minor (Ca. 1907), M.121: A Reconstruction., Edwin Lyle Haugan Jan 1989

Anton Von Webern's String Quartet In A Minor (Ca. 1907), M.121: A Reconstruction., Edwin Lyle Haugan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Webern's String Quartet in A Minor (ca. 1907), M.121 has survived in fair-copy performance parts for violin II and cello and twenty-six pages of sketches. In this study, the score has been reconstructed on the basis of those sources. This intensely expressive composition, which, with 269 measures, is one of Webern's most extensive movements, exhibits great motivic concentration, richly polyphonic texture, and sections in which tonality is suspended. Evidence suggests that it was played under Webern's direction. In Chapter I, the nature and extent of the problems encountered in reconstructing the score are described. Autograph sources are incomplete for some …

A Survey Of Alabama Band Directors Regarding Marching Band Competitions And Music Performance Achievement., Byron Leroy Dawes Jan 1989

A Survey Of Alabama Band Directors Regarding Marching Band Competitions And Music Performance Achievement., Byron Leroy Dawes

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to survey Alabama band directors regarding marching band competition involvement and music performance achievement of high school concert band students as measured by concert competition ratings at the district and state level. The study was a descriptive survey which involved a mailed questionnaire sent to Alabama public high school band directors. Concert band ratings were obtained from the state bandmaster's association which sponsors the concert competitions. Results indicated that although certain aspects of band program related to marching competition involvement appeared to have some relationship to concert band, marching competition involvement apparently neither enhanced …

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider Jan 1989

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider

Honors Capstones

In this thesis, I have attempted to describe the arts, music, and literature of the Napoleonic Age. In doing so, I have included England, France, and Germany. In order to understand the mind and manner of Napoleon, I have included historical background and pre-existing styles of this age. In order to fully understand the Napoleonic Age, I found it necessary to include important information about Corsica, Napoleon’s birthplace, Josephine and Marie Louise, Napoleon’s wives, and Napoleon himself. This information helps give the reader a common reference point concerning why Napoleon would act in a certain way. My research included extensive …

The Effects Of Music And Metronomic Beat On Heart Rate, Ratings Of Perceived Exertion, And Physical Endurance Prior To A Heart Rate Cut-Off, Cheryl Ann Louie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effects of music and metronomic beat on heart rate (HR). ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). and physical endurance in healthy females ages 18 to 30. Volunteers were screened via a health questionnaire and the Astrand Work Test on a Monark bicycle ergometer. yielding a predicted aerobic working capacity (V02) of 28 mililiters or more. The 30 subjects were then randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions (music or metronome group) for a cycling test at 75% capacity. HR and Borg RPE were measured repeatedly, with a posttest measure of physical endurance (kilometers travelled). No significant …
