Building The Meat Packing Industry In South Omaha, 1883-1898, Gail Lorna Didonato Aug 1989

Building The Meat Packing Industry In South Omaha, 1883-1898, Gail Lorna Didonato

Student Work

An article by Gregory R. Zieren was brought to my attention as I was completing this study. I Dealing with recently published works on the packing industry, it critiques books that have been my constant companions over the last two years. Zieren writes, "Despite the local focus [Chicago], none of the works is parochial in its scholarly concerns, and all of them broaden our understanding of the urban and social history of one the nation's quintessential working-class districts." Chicago was the environment for the development of the modern industry and, for almost a century, was the world's leading packing center. …

The Society Of American Indians: Too Many Chiefs And Not Enough Indians, Gwin E. Gover Jun 1989

The Society Of American Indians: Too Many Chiefs And Not Enough Indians, Gwin E. Gover

Student Work

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Indian reform groups were church-centered and were run by whites who had long been involved in the formulation of Indian policy. These people, whom one historian has labeled "old campaigners," thought of themselves as the "Friends of the Indian," and their individual interests focused on specific facets of national Indian policy. Founded in 1879, the Boston Indian Citizenship Committee sought political advancement for Indians. In 1882, the Indian Rights Association emerged to protect Indians1 legal rights. A year later, the Women’s National Indian Association was founded to build missions and promote …

Washington State History: The Early Years, Margo M. Buchan Jan 1989

Washington State History: The Early Years, Margo M. Buchan

All Graduate Projects

The High School Completion Lab setting for Washington State History students, whose pre-project assignment for two hours a day, three days a week, involved reading the selected text, Northwest Heritage by William Scofield, and answering Chapter Questions, met state requirements but seemed unnecessarily sterile. It was hoped that the production of videotaped lessons which could be presented either to groups of H.S. 016 students or to individuals would, if well-made, provide the class with an enriched perspective of Washington State History.

Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell Jan 1989

Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the development of the doctrine of "conspiracies in restraint of trade" in the labor market by means of an application of two models of economic regulation. As heuristic devices, these models are utilized to explain the formation of English and American labor law in three different eras. The market failure model posits that labor market regulators seek to remedy unequal bargaining power and asymmetric information so as to achieve economic efficiency. This model's 'liberty and virtue' component emphasizes the normative end of character formation. According to the interest group model, organized labor …

Pro Bono Publico: New Orleans Politics And Municipal Reform In The Progressive Era, 1912-1926. (Volumes I And Ii)., Terrence Walter Fitzmorris Jan 1989

Pro Bono Publico: New Orleans Politics And Municipal Reform In The Progressive Era, 1912-1926. (Volumes I And Ii)., Terrence Walter Fitzmorris

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Social prejudice and moral consideration did not form the basis of city politics and municipal reform in New Orleans during the Progressive Era. The Regular Democratic Organization, the so-called political machine and the civic reformers of New Orleans were more concerned with issues of expanding and centralized municipal authority, regulation of private and public corporations, completion and expansion of public services, "living wages" and decent working conditions for organized labor, equitable taxation and assessment rates for property holders, and city planning and development. Admittedly, the principal leadership of the municipal reform movement came from the "upper crust" of New Orleans …

The Dismantling Of De Jure Segregation In Louisiana, 1954-1974. (Volumes I And Ii)., Carroll Joseph Dugas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the two decades between 1954 and 1974, the State of Louisiana progressed from a closed, white-dominated society to an open, multi-racial society with legal safeguards in place to assure equal protection and equal opportunity for all residents regardless of race or color. Prior to 1960, the vast majority of blacks were unable to vote, serve on juries, buy homes in decent neighborhoods, use publicly-owned facilities or frequent hotels, restaurants and other public accommodations. In addition to these humiliations, they were required to utilize inadequate "separate but equal" public parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, schools, waiting areas and correctional facilities until …

Paul Volcker's Monetary Policy In Retrospect, Michelle C. Pisut Jan 1989

Paul Volcker's Monetary Policy In Retrospect, Michelle C. Pisut

Honors Capstones

Monetary policy is a key factor in determining the course of economic history. Paul Volcker, who held the office of Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board from 1979-1987, left his mark by adamantly fighting inflation throughout his term. He amply filled his role as an inflation fighter by using tight monetary policy to tame the rampant inflation of the late 1970s. Then he led the country into prosperity by implementing an expansionary policy from mid-1982 until the end of his term, still without re-inflating the economy. He stepped down from his office on 1987, leaving Alan Greenspan to lead perhaps …

Agriculture In Ancient Ugarit And The Old Testament, David Alan Thompson Jan 1989

Agriculture In Ancient Ugarit And The Old Testament, David Alan Thompson

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to examine agriculture as it is found in the literatures of Ugarit and early Israel. Much work has been done in the field of Ugaritic and Old Testament studies which attempts to draw parallels and offer reconstructions of the relationship between the Old Testament and the Ras Shamra texts. This paper does not claim to offer new material in this direction, but rather to classify and analyze existing observations within the parameter of agriculture. This is done in an effort to better understand an aspect that was so fundamental to the experiences of early …

From Plantation Laborers To Ardent Nationalists: Koreans' Experiences In America And Their Search For Ethnic Identity, 1903-1924., Young Ho Son

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is a study of pioneer Korean immigrants from the beginning of the "mass immigration" in 1903 to the passage of the Oriental Exclusion Act of 1924. The main emphasis is upon their background and experiences, and in particular upon their struggles to maintain their ethnic identity and to create for themselves an American identity. In addressing these themes, this study focuses on three major questions. First, in order to understand why conservative, land-bound Koreans left their home country for an unknown land, this study analyzes historical, socioeconomic, and political forces which worked together in both Korean and American …

Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore Jan 1989

Race Relations And Community Development: The Education Of Blacks In New Orleans, 1862-1960., Donald E. Devore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Throughout the history of the United States individuals and groups have used education as a means to improve their status in America--economically, politically, and socially. When slaves gained their freedom between 1862 and 1865, they, too, looked to education as a way to ameliorate the harmful effects of over two hundred years of slavery. In New Orleans freedmen and those free before the war viewed education almost as a panacea to the many problems within the black community. Black New Orleanians realized, of course, that the gains derived from education would take time to filter throughout the entire community. During …

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider Jan 1989

The Arts, Literature, And Music Of The Napoleonic Age, Anne Elizabeth Schneider

Honors Capstones

In this thesis, I have attempted to describe the arts, music, and literature of the Napoleonic Age. In doing so, I have included England, France, and Germany. In order to understand the mind and manner of Napoleon, I have included historical background and pre-existing styles of this age. In order to fully understand the Napoleonic Age, I found it necessary to include important information about Corsica, Napoleon’s birthplace, Josephine and Marie Louise, Napoleon’s wives, and Napoleon himself. This information helps give the reader a common reference point concerning why Napoleon would act in a certain way. My research included extensive …

For People Who Like To Smoke (A Brief History Of Cigarette Advertising), Willard W. Waller Jan 1989

For People Who Like To Smoke (A Brief History Of Cigarette Advertising), Willard W. Waller

Honors Capstones

The advertising of cigarettes has been controversial subject for many years. The purpose of this report has been to provide a somewhat brief examination of cigarette advertising from it's origins to the present day, inclusive of all media. Through research in the field of cigarette advertising, ads and other promotions from the entire period covered were examined, and works regarding government policy and consumer behavior relating to the advertising of cigarettes were examined as well. Although it was not initially planned to be as such, the paper presents an argument for the abolition of all cigarette advertising through evidence about …

The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley Jan 1989

The Development And Failure Of Historic Agricultural Communities Of Utah: A Case Study Of Johns Valley, Utah, Wayne R. Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

Many agricultural communities have developed in Utah since the first settlement, but many no longer exist today. Some of these early communities experienced a "boom and bust," while others struggled for several years and were eventually abandoned. Johns Valley is a good example of these historic communities, as it experienced rapid growth and times of success and prosperity, yet it struggled and was eventually abandoned.
The situation in Johns Valley, from its early settlement to its demise, demonstrates the hope of the people who settled there and their efforts to make Johns Valley a productive and successful area. History also …

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton Jan 1989

Saints In The Secular City: A History Of The Los Angeles Stake, Chad M. Orton

Theses and Dissertations

Beginning in 1847 and continuing to the turn of the century, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were encouraged to gather to Utah, where they formed communities seperated from the evils of the world around them. While Mormonism continues to be closely associated with Utah, in 1989 it is a world-wide church with nearly seven million members, most residing outside of Utah, and many of these in major urban areas. Nevertheless, few studies have been made of how the Church has developed outside of Utah.

When the Los Angeles Stake was organized in 1923, it …
