Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr Jan 1989

Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation uses Sir John Hicks' concept of income as a guide to integrate environmental factors into the concept and measure of national income. Chapter 1 introduces Hicks' concept of income as the maximum amount which one can consume in a given period and still be as well off at the end of the period as he was at the beginning. This basic idea of sustainability requires accounting for the net depletion of all capital consumed in current production. Chapter 2 documents recent trends in natural resource use to demonstrate that exclusion of the depreciation of environmental capital from NNP …

Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate Jan 1989

Mechanism Of Toxicity Of 2-Thiotriazone (Ttz) In Rats., Twintillia Murphy Tate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The mechanism of action of 2-thiotriazone (TTZ) was evaluated in adult and immature rats of both sexes. TTZ produced marked pulmonary toxicity in rats that was both age and sex-dependent. It was highly toxic in male rats (oral LD50 of 4.6 mg/kg and ip LD50 of 1.4 mg/kg). Female rats were more resistant than males and immature rats (30-40 days of age) were totally resistant to TTZ toxicity. Gross and histological examination of lung tissue from rats exposed to TTZ showed severe pulmonary edema, effusion and mottling of the lungs. Significant increases in lung weights were also observed. Diethylmaleate (DEM) …

Ambiguity And Sexuality: The Effects Of Advance Organizers On Memory Of An Ambiguous Text., Cathy Orman Castille Jan 1989

Ambiguity And Sexuality: The Effects Of Advance Organizers On Memory Of An Ambiguous Text., Cathy Orman Castille

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thematically ambiguous written text was presented to 269 subjects in an examination of the role of cognition in sexuality. Information in the form of a title and a descriptive sentence (advance organizer information) was varied according to experimental condition, and this information reflected either a sexual or a non-sexual theme. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 9 experimental groups, which varied in the amount and type of advance information given prior to the story. After reading the story and performing an intervening task, subjects completed two memory tasks. Both recall and recognition memory tasks were utilized to determine the …

Prospect Theory In Governmental Accounting: Implications For The Budgeting Process At The Local Level., Karen Sue Mckenzie Jan 1989

Prospect Theory In Governmental Accounting: Implications For The Budgeting Process At The Local Level., Karen Sue Mckenzie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Small local governmental units are responsible for allocating resources on behalf of a substantial portion of all United States citizens. The research reported here investigates the effects of presentation format (or framing) on decision preference in a governmental resource allocation context. The subjects represent a population of governmental units which has not received prior research attention--small local governments. Budget preparers were asked to choose among objectively identical alternatives, which differed in presentation formats. The cases used to investigate the effects of presentation were modelled after Kahneman and Tversky's (1979) seminal work in prospect theory, which addressed violations of expected utility …

Queueing And Stability Analysis Of Buffered Csma/Cd Local Networks., Young Keun Yoon Jan 1989

Queueing And Stability Analysis Of Buffered Csma/Cd Local Networks., Young Keun Yoon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation develops a joint probability generating function for the message quene lengths in a slotted p-persistent CSMA/CD (Carrier-Sense Multiple-Access with Collision Detection) system with a finite population of buffered users. Each user is assumed to have an independent and identical process of packet generation and an infinite buffer for storing outstanding packets. A closed form formula is obtained for the generating function in case of a two user system. Analytic formulas for the stability condition of a p-persistent CSMA/CD system are derived using the generating function. The range of the transmission probability p that leads to stability is examined …

Persuasion Via Audiovisual Transmission: Is The Persuasiveness Of A Message Affected By Whether The Audience Believes The Message Presentation Is A Videotaped Recording Or Is An Unrehearsed Live Telecast?, Charles Laurier Dufour Jan 1989

Persuasion Via Audiovisual Transmission: Is The Persuasiveness Of A Message Affected By Whether The Audience Believes The Message Presentation Is A Videotaped Recording Or Is An Unrehearsed Live Telecast?, Charles Laurier Dufour

Doctoral Dissertations

One hundred and fifty-nine university students participated in a study examining the effect on persuasion of believing that an audiovisual message presentation was a videotaped recording or was an unrehearsed live telecast from an adjacent room. Participants were also assigned to one of two other groups, one instructed to focus its attention on the information being presented (i.e., a centrally focused group), the other instructed to focus on the message source's physical appearance (i.e., a peripherally focused group).

A 2 (Believed Live vs. Believed Recorded) x 2 (Centrally Focused vs. Peripherally Focused) Analysis of Variance was performed on the data. …

The Concept Of Conscious Pleasure In The History Of Modern American Psychology, David C. Devonis Jan 1989

The Concept Of Conscious Pleasure In The History Of Modern American Psychology, David C. Devonis

Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of pleasure is acknowledged by historians of psychology as one of psychology's principles. Because the details of the concept's development are not well known, however, diverse views of pleasure's place in the history of psychology arise. Some historians see pleasure or hedonism as issues which were important only in psychology's distant past. Others believe that pleasure, understood as a conscious and valuable personal experience, vanished from psychology's conceptual vocabulary during the behaviorist period. Some have equated pleasure only with behavioristic theories and with psychoanalysis, two systems which have characterized pleasure as unconscious. These views, along with tendencies within …

The Dynamics Of A Nudibranch-Hydroid Predator-Prey Association: Cuthona Nana And Hydractinia Echinata, Nadine C. Folino Jan 1989

The Dynamics Of A Nudibranch-Hydroid Predator-Prey Association: Cuthona Nana And Hydractinia Echinata, Nadine C. Folino

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to document the biological interactions in a predator-prey relationship involving a nudibranch and hydroid, respectively. The predator is a hermaphroditic opisthobranch mollusc with direct development, Cuthona nana. Cuthona nana feeds specifically on the colonial hydroid Hydractinia echinata.

Population patterns of predator and prey were documented by collecting hermit crabs with hydroid-covered shells. Results indicate a subannual life cycle for C. nana with juveniles and egg masses present throughout the year. Hydractinia echinata colonies reproduce in the spring and are more abundant in late summer and early fall.

Field and laboratory observations indicate that adult …

The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs In Personal Computer Utilization, Ronald Lawrence Thompson Jan 1989

The Role Of Attitudes And Beliefs In Personal Computer Utilization, Ronald Lawrence Thompson

Digitized Theses

A two-phased study investigating the role of attitudes and beliefs in the use of personal computers was conducted in 9 organizations. During the first phase a questionnaire was administered to 278 knowledge workers within one organization. The measurement scale items were tested and revised slightly, and the research model tested also. In the second phase, the revised questionnaire was administered to 364 knowledge workers (80% gross response rate) in 8 diverse organizations. The measures and research model were tested using Partial Least Squares. Nine of eleven hypothesized relations were supported statistically, and 38% of the variance was explained in the …

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard Jan 1989

Regeneration And Politics: Buber's Idea Of Nationhood, Janet Catherine Menard

Digitized Theses

The dissertation explores Martin Buber's conception of Jewish nationhood, in particular his idea of "regeneration", which, applied to Israel, involves as much divine and universal dimensions as it involves secular and particular dimensions, such as the biblical idea of cosmic mission and chosen nationhood, on the one hand, and return to labour on the land and the formation of communal socialism, on the other. Chapters I-VII discuss this attempted synthesis. In addition, they touch upon Buber's views on national development and autonomy within the context of international relations and the reality of Palestine--a reality distinguished by the presence of an …

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice Jan 1989

The Morphology And Contractile Function Of Skeletal Muscle In Aged Humans, Charles Leslie Rice

Digitized Theses

Muscle strength and morphology were investigated in four studies in elderly men and women between the ages of 62 and 102 years. The purposes were to: (1) measure the voluntary strength in several limb muscle groups from an 'older' elderly population, (2) measure and compare the amount of muscle and non-muscle tissue (NMT) in the arms and legs of older (65 + years of age) and younger (25 to 38 years of age) males using computed tomography (CT) scans, (3) compare the CT results with measures of anthropometry in the same two groups of males, and (4) measure the electrically …

Consumption And Asset Returns In Artificial Economies, Richard Tiffany Macklem Jan 1989

Consumption And Asset Returns In Artificial Economies, Richard Tiffany Macklem

Digitized Theses

This study examines the ability of dynamic, stochastic equilibrium models of consumer behavior to simultaneously mimic the salient features of U.S. consumption and asset return data.;Part one of the investigation focuses on the interaction between consumption choices for durable and non-durable goods, the real interest rate, and the rate of return on equity. A dynamic, stochastic, two-good general equilibrium model of consumer behaviour is constructed, and equity and a risk-free asset are priced in this economy. A discrete state space version of the model is then calibrated to U.S. data and solved numerically. Examination of the model's statistical properties are …

Dynamic Stochastic Analysis Of A Small Open Economy, Estrada Enrique Mendoza Jan 1989

Dynamic Stochastic Analysis Of A Small Open Economy, Estrada Enrique Mendoza

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of four essays that study the dynamic stochastic behavior of a small open economy. In the framework studied here, rational individuals formulate optimal intertemporal plans in an environment where domestic capital and foreign financial assets are used as alternative vehicles of savings, and where random disturbances affect the production technology or the international terms of trade. As demonstrated in the papers, the separation of savings and investment decisions that characterizes the individual's optimal plans in open economies has important implications for the evolution of macroeconomic aggregates.;The main contribution of this work is that it undertakes a quantitative …

Subcapsular Splenic Microcirculation Quantitatively Analyzed By In Vivo Microscopy, Douglas Michael Ragan Jan 1989

Subcapsular Splenic Microcirculation Quantitatively Analyzed By In Vivo Microscopy, Douglas Michael Ragan

Digitized Theses

The objective of this work was to improve in vivo microscopy of the splenic microcirculation to obtain quantitative data such as velocity of RBCs, diameters and volumes of vessels, and to study possible mechanisms controlling redistribution of blood flow.;Illumination limitations necessitated using small spleens. Young rats (27-89 g) were the predominant species studied, although mice were occasionally used. Inverted microscopy and oblique illumination were key elements in obtaining high quality video images for quantitative analysis. Still photographs were obtained from video images by exposing film to several successive fields.;The splenic volume occupied by capillaries, reticular meshwork and sinuses is 0.16%, …

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek Jan 1989

Reality And Knowledge In Voegelin's Political Philosophy. (Volumes I & Ii)., Seung-Hyun Baek

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the primary aim of this dissertation to draw attention to Voegelin's political philosophy and to place it at the center of the conduct of political inquiry, by criticizing positivistic political epistemology. Though scientism had become a dominant commitment, it does not provide an appropriate approach to political knowledge. Making reality dependent on methodology, it neglects important political existence, and fails to ask deeper questions about the truth-content political reality. However, there is an extra-spatio-temporal reality, that we can know, albeit imperfectly, and not discovered by the modern scientific methods. By means of the restoration and "retheoretization" of the …

Islam And Political Development: The Tunisian Experience., Najoua Kefi Handal Jan 1989

Islam And Political Development: The Tunisian Experience., Najoua Kefi Handal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contrary to many theories attempting to explain "political development" in the contemporary world, the recent experience of the Middle East indicates that religious values, principles, and institutions have to be taken into account in any adequate understanding of political processes in developing nations. This dissertation is an attempt to identify and analyze in detail the specific contribution of the Islamic religious tradition in the political development of Sunni Tunisia in comparison and contrast to three selected case studies: Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. These four nation-states were chosen for examination because they provide evidence illustrating patterns or "models" of mosque-state …

The Macroeconomics Of Presidential Popularity., Susan Katherine Washburn Jan 1989

The Macroeconomics Of Presidential Popularity., Susan Katherine Washburn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines several issues dealing with the public's social preference function between inflation and unemployment. First, the preference function is estimated as a nonlinear function. Second, the thesis analyzes the ability of a presidential administration to improve its popularity level by exploiting a short-run Phillips curve. Finally, preference functions disaggregated by sex, race, political party, and geographical region are estimated. Presidential approval levels are proxied by monthly Gallup Poll approval data. Chapter One serves as an overview of the current body of literature. While theoretical analyses of macroeconomic policy have traditionally assumed that the public's social preference function is …

Computerized Performance Monitoring And Control Systems: Impact On Canadian Service Sector Workers, Rebecca Anne Grant Jan 1989

Computerized Performance Monitoring And Control Systems: Impact On Canadian Service Sector Workers, Rebecca Anne Grant

Digitized Theses

Corporate survival in the competitive service sector demands continuous improvement in employee productivity. Thus, managers of labor-intensive businesses are always searching for new tools to increase productivity. One tool gaining popularity, and notoriety, is the computerized performance monitoring and control system (CPMCS). Proponents say that CPMCSs increase the consistency, accuracy and fairness of performance measurement, and improve productivity. Opponents argue that productivity improves at the expense of customer service, quality of work life, and employee health. Despite the importance of these issues, few researchers have studied the effects of computerized performance monitoring.;This two-stage research study examined CPMCS impact on service …

Beyond Virtue And Honour: Montesquieu And The Problem Of England In The "Spirit Of The Laws", Donald Anton Desserud Jan 1989

Beyond Virtue And Honour: Montesquieu And The Problem Of England In The "Spirit Of The Laws", Donald Anton Desserud

Digitized Theses

This thesis attempts to resolve the problematic nature of Montesquieu's analysis of the English constitution. It is argued that in the Spirit of the Laws Montesquieu presents England as a mixed regime composed of republican and monarchical elements. Further, England is able to protect the liberty of its citizens from unwarranted intrusions into their private lives by governments, and permits them to pursue a natural desire for commercial activity. England is able to avoid corruption, or at least the effects of corruption, by limiting government power, and by nurturing the interests of the citizens in participating in politics. Hence liberty …

Analyzing The Organization Of Animal Behavior: The Application Of Nonsymmetric Multidimensional Scaling Techniques, Linda M. Sorensen Jan 1989

Analyzing The Organization Of Animal Behavior: The Application Of Nonsymmetric Multidimensional Scaling Techniques, Linda M. Sorensen

Digitized Theses

Several multidimensional quantitative approaches have been applied to the analysis of the organization of behavior. These include chi square, lag sequence analysis, and non-symmetric multidimensional scaling techniques. Transition matrices are generally asymmetric and this is a problematic feature for the first two techniques noted above. Hence is is argued that non-symmetric multidimensional scaling (MDS) techniques are the most appropriate for the analysis of such data sets.;To illustrate these three techniques and to evaluate non-symmetric MDS as a valuable new tool which has been underutilized by ethologists, observational data were collected in a focal animal study of two members of a …
