An Analysis Of Institutional Approaches For Management Of Common Rangeland Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa, Mohale Gabriel Sekoto

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this report is to address the issues that are relevant to the management of common rangeland resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. I feel that the issues presented here are among some of those which are important and need to be considered in order to understand the kind of performance perceived about the efforts to develop the range and livestock in pastoral societies. In this report, three case studies have been reviewed, regarding institutional approaches tried to manage common rangelands. These case studies are about group ranches in Kajiado District, Kenya and in Upper Volta and the Sehlabathebe Grazing …

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu Apr 1989

Automatic Meshing Of Free-Form Deformation Solids, Ssuta S. Hsu

Theses and Dissertations

Development of computer models and subsequent finite element analysis, are important aspects of modern engineering design. In this process, the geometry creation and finite element analysis software are well developed; however, the process of discretizing a geometry into a proper finite element model is time consuming and tedious. The work presented here uses the free-form deformation method to create smooth solid models, and invokes a solid subdivision and transition method to generate the hexahedron finite elements. The combination of these two techniques provides an automatic mesh generator that is easy to use, creates acceptable hexahedron elements for finite element analysis, …

Dynamic Analysis Of Rotating Fan Structures By The Finite Element Method, Mohamed Said Rouas Jan 1989

Dynamic Analysis Of Rotating Fan Structures By The Finite Element Method, Mohamed Said Rouas

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Finite Element Method is used to determine the fundamental mode shapes and frequencies of fan structures. The analysis is performed on five fan structures, having different geometries, under static conditions and under centrifugal forces at various angular velocities. The results of the analysis are correlated with experimental data. The Southwell Coefficient, which takes into account the effect of centrifugal stiffening/softening, is determined for each fan and used for the prediction of its dynamic response and critical speeds. The research led to a study of the influence of riveted spider-to-blade connections on the vibration response of propeller fans; This thesis …

Drinking-Driving And Social Control: An Analysis Of Peer Intervention, Michael David Collins Jan 1989

Drinking-Driving And Social Control: An Analysis Of Peer Intervention, Michael David Collins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The present study contends that legislative sanctions, regardless of severity, cannot sufficiently curb the drunken driver unless they are met with the concern of an equally sanctitive public (Formby and Smykla, 1984). The explicit goal of research presented here is to report the extent and power of peer sanction surrounding potential drinking and driving situations. This goal consists of the following components: (1) to discern whether individuals are at all inclined to attempt intervention in situations of potential drunken driving, and if so, to ascertain the types of intervention techniques attempted as well as intervention settings; (2) to determine which …

The Dynamic Response Of A Flexible Three-Link Robot Using Strain Gages, Lagrange Polynomials, Fourier Series, And The Finite Element Analysis, Robert Frank Marceau Jan 1989

The Dynamic Response Of A Flexible Three-Link Robot Using Strain Gages, Lagrange Polynomials, Fourier Series, And The Finite Element Analysis, Robert Frank Marceau

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents theoretical and experimental methods for determining the static and dynamic response, in three dimensional space, of a flexible three-link robotic manipulator. The Links are designed to deform elastically under static and dynamic loads. Lagrange polynomials are derived to determine the defected shape of the robotic links. All coefficients of the Lagrange polynomials are functions of the elastic strain at three specific locations on each link. Strains are converted to voltage differentials and are read into a micro-computer through an A-to-D board system, where they are converted to digital strain values. Coefficients defining the damped response of the …

Community Health Decisions: An Analysis Of A Grassroots Venture Into Citizen Participation In Health Care Policy Prioritization Issues, Michele Bonnee-Nichols Jan 1989

Community Health Decisions: An Analysis Of A Grassroots Venture Into Citizen Participation In Health Care Policy Prioritization Issues, Michele Bonnee-Nichols

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Health care policymaking has been largely a closed system in which policymaking experts, special interest groups, and politicians have joined forces to decide what was best for the health care of the American people. This system has been shortsighted leading to severe long-range consequences on society; These critical forms of social consequence warrant this study of health care planning. Specifically, an analysis of a citizen-based grassroots venture, known as "Community Health Decisions," provides us a description of a civic participation movement into the health care political arena; It would appear that with the conclusions of this author, we might learn …

Analysis Of Deformation Bands In The Aztec Sandstone, Valley Of Fire State Park, Nevada, Robin Eugene Hill Jan 1989

Analysis Of Deformation Bands In The Aztec Sandstone, Valley Of Fire State Park, Nevada, Robin Eugene Hill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Deformation bands were analyzed by mapping and describing over 500 of the structures exposed on a bedding surface of about 560 square meters present in the Aztec Sandstone in the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada; Three sets of deformation bands are present. Two sets are interpreted as coeval and form a conjugate set with a dihedral angle of 90 degRees These are often composed of multiple bands. In contrast, the third set is nearly always a single band which is sinuous or jagged along its length. They often curve sharply near the intersections with the earlier formed sets, becoming …

Analysis Of Hotel Guest Room Supply, Donald Walter Raymond Jan 1989

Analysis Of Hotel Guest Room Supply, Donald Walter Raymond

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

"Analysis of Hotel Guest Room Supply" is an exploratory paper that develops both a methodology and a model for estimating the expected number of hotel rooms at a destination location (MSA). The expected number of hotel employees at a destination are estimated from US government data (1980 Census of the Population and County Business Patterns). The hotel employee estimates are used to determine the expected number of hotel guest rooms for a destination location. These estimates were also applied to a third model, inventory shortage, to determine if hotel guest room supply and demand were in a state of equilibrium. …

Counterterrorism In The 1990s: A Framework For Dynamic Analysis, Marilyn Rose Rogers Jan 1989

Counterterrorism In The 1990s: A Framework For Dynamic Analysis, Marilyn Rose Rogers

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The costs of terrorism are high. Beyond the immediate targets of violence, there exists an audience of public perception whose fragile temperament is too often swayed by the seeming randomness of the act. When terrorism gains momentum, legitimate governments lose public confidence in state protection. To minimize such effects, governments must consider a variety of options to counter the impact of terrorism; Chapter One focuses on the necessity of counter-terrorism plans which encompass the totality of the circumstances; Chapter Two examines the historical evolution of terrorism from a tactical open warfare activity to its modern form as a complex political …

Analyses Of The Structure And Function Of Lower Colorado River Riparian Plant Communities, David E Busch Jan 1989

Analyses Of The Structure And Function Of Lower Colorado River Riparian Plant Communities, David E Busch

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Throughout western North America, riparian ecosystem function has been transformed by anthropogenic influences on riverine environments. Modified flood frequencies, durations or intensities, depressed floodplain water tables, and increased rhizosphere salinities contribute to change in communities formerly dominated by alluvial forest taxa. In addition, the invasion of a naturalized arborescent shrub, Tamarix ramosissima, potentially alters competitive hierarchies and disturbance regimes in riparian ecosystems. To evaluate southwestern riparian community structure and function, comparison of ecophysiological characteristics of dominant woody taxa with site physical parameters was undertaken in riparian ecosystems that are relatively pristine (Bill Williams River) and highly perturbed (lower Colorado River). …

An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Workplace In A Selected Year-Round School, Kelly Ann Sturdy

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study sought to describe the workplace of the year-round school using the structure of Johnson's workplace theory. The rationale for conducting the study was based on the assumption that the nature of the workplace affects the teaching/learning act. Teachers' perceptions of the workplace ultimately influence their attitudes, efforts, and commitment toward the act of teaching. The year-round school schedule was found to influence teachers' perceptions of their workplace; The frequent breaks of the year-round schedule were perceived as beneficial for both students and teachers by providing alternate vacation opportunities, time for inexperienced teachers to evaluate and plan instructional strategies, …

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger Jan 1989

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger

Honors Theses

The feasibility of using solid-phase resins for monitoring concentrations of pesticides in water was examined. Efforts were made to ascertain relationships between concentrations of a pesticide (methoxychlor) in water and on a resin (AXD-2) under laboratory conditions. Solutions of pesticide in water were drawn through columns of resin. Methylene Chloride was used to absorb the pesticide from the resin. Gas chromatography and ultraviolet spectrophotometry were used to measure concentrations of pesticide.
