Comparison Of Color Lightness In Two-Color Plus Black Reproduction Systems Vs. Three-Color Reproduction Systems, Lonnie Jackson Nov 1987

Comparison Of Color Lightness In Two-Color Plus Black Reproduction Systems Vs. Three-Color Reproduction Systems, Lonnie Jackson

Theses

A theory that has existed since 1948 has just recently gained wide acceptance from the printing industry. The recent technological advancements in electronic scanners has made it feasible for color separations to be scanned implementing Gray Component Replacement (GCR) . Eventhough most of the electronic scanners today have GCR capabilities, some questions regarding GCR and its implementation have gone unanswered. In an attempt to help resolve this problem, this paper investigated the issue of lightness characteristics associated with GCR reproductions. In particular, this paper attempted to prove that, by replacing a graying component of a conventional reproduction made up of …

Design And Implementation Of A Local Area Network Utilizing Intel 310/80286 Systems, James Leach Nov 1987

Design And Implementation Of A Local Area Network Utilizing Intel 310/80286 Systems, James Leach

Theses

The goal of this work was to provide the foundation for a course in networking by developing the hardware and software for a token ring Local Area Network (LAN). Any course work in networking would focus on the emerging International Standards Organization (ISO) Open Systems Interconnections (OSI) model. This model provides a seven layered structure, where each layer performs some logical aspect of the communication process. Thus, the software developed would have to provide the functionality of a multiple layered design, implying multiple tasks communicating by operating system primitives. Also, a simplified design would minimize the time for those students …

A Mathematical Analysis Of An Electronic Dot Generating Scanner For Dot Resolution And Tone Reproduction, Frederick K. Waechter Oct 1987

A Mathematical Analysis Of An Electronic Dot Generating Scanner For Dot Resolution And Tone Reproduction, Frederick K. Waechter

Theses

An electronic dot generating scanner is a complex machine. This complexity is based in the photographic methods which the scanner is designed to duplicate. This study addresses the mathematical principles of the entire scanner system. This paper was intended to provide an improved understanding of the scanner system. The hypothesis states that a mathematical analysis with experimental verification can be developed to accurately model the internal optics, tone reproduction, and output dot characteristics of an electronic dot generating scanner. The analysis begins with a functional block diagram, which shows the information flow through the scanner. This diagram breaks the process …

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing Poly(Vinyl Chloride), David W. Lee Oct 1987

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing Poly(Vinyl Chloride), David W. Lee

Theses

The thermal degradation of blends of poly(vinyl chloride) ( PVC ) with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA), and two ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing 70 weight percent vinyl-acetate (EVA70) and 45 weight percent vinyl acetate (EVA45) were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The PVC, PVA, EVA45 and EVA70 degrade in two-step processes for each polymer. The PVA/PVC , EVA45/PVC and the EVA70/PVC blends do show some inter action during the first step of the degradation process while the respective second steps are unaffected. The acid produced by the degradation of one polymer causes accelerated loss of the other acid in …

Factors Influencing The Rate Of Sensitization And Maximum Sensitivity Of An Iridium (Iii) Surface Sensitized Silver Bromide Emulsion, Nimrod Natan

Theses

A monodisperse silver bromide emulsion was surface sensitized with potassium hexachloroiridate (III). The rate of sensitization and maximum photographic sensitivity were determined at different sensitization conditions. The effects of silver ion concentration (pAg), length of sensitization, and the presence of the thiocyanate onion during sensitization were defined. The highest gain of sensitivity of an Iridium sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.43 log H units at pAg 9 after 30 minutes of after-ripening at 70 C. The highest gain of sensitivity of an iridium + thiocyanate sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.55 log H units at pAg …

Land Cover Classification Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Images Using Pseudo Invariant Feature Normalization Applied To Change Detection, Tim Hawes Sep 1987

Land Cover Classification Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Images Using Pseudo Invariant Feature Normalization Applied To Change Detection, Tim Hawes

Theses

A radiometric normalization technique for compensating illumination and atmospheric differences between multi-temporal images should allow classification of the images with a single classification algorithm. This allows a simpler approach to land cover change detection. Land cover classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery with and without Pseudo Invariant Feature Normalization was performed to demonstrate the effect on classification and change detection accuracy. A post-classification change detection method using two separate classification algorithms, one for each date, was performed as a baseline comparison. Land cover classification using one classification algorithm was attempted with and without gain and offset correction to serve as …

Comparison Of The Mid-Frequency Line Edge Noise Algorithms Of Jim Hamerly And Yigal Gur For The Best Correlation To The Psychophysical Defect Known As Raggedness, Kevin Huff Aug 1987

Comparison Of The Mid-Frequency Line Edge Noise Algorithms Of Jim Hamerly And Yigal Gur For The Best Correlation To The Psychophysical Defect Known As Raggedness, Kevin Huff

Theses

A study was conducted to compare the mid-frequency line edge noise algorithms of Jim Hamerly and Yigal Gur. Comparisons were made to determine which algorithm correlated best with the psychophysical defect known as raggedness. Tests were conducted on "standard" observers using a series of test images with varying amounts of edge noise. A master image was produced photographically and ensuing images generated with random error using electrophotographic processes. Scanning of the images to determine output metric values was done on a Zeiss microdensitometer. It was found that with electrophotographic prints, the Hamerly algorithm has a correlation coefficient of .83. Determination …

Effects Of Chromatic Surrounds On The Perceived Color Balance Of Reflection Prints, David R. Odgers Aug 1987

Effects Of Chromatic Surrounds On The Perceived Color Balance Of Reflection Prints, David R. Odgers

Theses

Many have pursued an understanding of factors that affect color perception. One such factor is the viewing condition under which an observation occurs. For example, the appearance of a color patch is altered by the color and luminance of the area surrounding it. Even if this perception is subconscious, it still influences the viewer's judgments. Thus, one expects that the perception of a complex scene, a photograph, will also be changed by a colored surround. This paper investigates such an effect, thereby increasing the understanding of color perception.

Awakening The Spirit, Jane Emily Dalton Aug 1987

Awakening The Spirit, Jane Emily Dalton

Theses

I have chosen to create a series of woven rugs and handwoven panels which reflect a personal vision. I choose to think metaphysically about the world I live in and about the objects that surround me. Life represents a spiritual journey in which each of us is involved. The Bible says that, "Many are called, but few are chosen." However, I tend to agree more with the following statement: "We all are called and we are all chosen if we simply have the courage to step into the unknown." Many things could cause a person to begin an internal evaluation …

A Study Of Color Image Quality With Respect To Screen Angle Arrangement In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Ted (Te-Chung) Chen Aug 1987

A Study Of Color Image Quality With Respect To Screen Angle Arrangement In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Ted (Te-Chung) Chen

Theses

The advantage of using a single screen-angle (Dot-on-Dot) reproduction for multicolor halftone printing is a sharper reproduction with the decrease, of. a rosette pattern in all image areas. The purpose of this study was to quantify the differences of color image quality between conventional reproduction using four screen-angles and a single screen-angle printing technique. In addition, the influence of screen frequency to the final color image quality in the Dot-on-Dot printing was also investigated. The results of this study confirmed that there is a linearity of image quality for all color halftone printing regardless of the arrangement of the screen …

Evaluation Of Some Multivariate Cusum Schemes, Susan L. Spindler

Theses

This paper will review and compare five multivariate CUSUM techniques. Two of these are proposed by Crosier (1986), the multivariate CUSUM and the CUSUM of T (COT). It will also compare two proposed by Pignatiello (1986), the multivariate CUSUM #1 (MCl) and the multivariate CUSUM #2 (MC2). The fifth method which will be compared is the multivariate Shewhart method. A discussion of the method of computation and a comparison of results of all the above methods using the same data set will be included. Additionally, a short commentary on the cusum method by Woodall and Ncube is enclosed. Graphical interpretation …

The Optical Spread Functions And Noise Characteristics Of Selected Paper Substrates Measured In Typical Reflection Optical System Configurations, Janet L. Kofender Jul 1987

The Optical Spread Functions And Noise Characteristics Of Selected Paper Substrates Measured In Typical Reflection Optical System Configurations, Janet L. Kofender

Theses

Research into the signal and noise characteristics that ultimately determine the performance quality of an imaging system has done little to isolate the contribution of the final image carrying substrate. A study is presented that experimentally analyzes some optical characteristics of six paper substrates representative of those used in lithography, xerography and photography. The optical characteristics studied can have a direct impact on image quality and are a result of the paper structure and its light scattering properties. Reflection microdensitometer techniques are used to provide representations of optical spread functions and an analysis of paper noise which is quantified as …

Pate De Verre Process, Ann Frellsen

Theses

The intent of this thesis is to present a concise summary of the basic processes involved in the pate de verre method of casting glass. The pate de verre process allows one to cast practically any conceivable form into a glass object. Prior to beginning, however, one should give same consideration to the entire process its possibilities and its limitations. Beginning with making glass frit, the techniques covered include experimentation an combining glass frit with ceramic frits to achieve a variety of surfaces not normally available with one glass formula. The ingredients of the plaster mold used to contain the …

An Exploration Of Conscious And Instinctive Concepts Within Ceramic Sculpture, Pamela Jayne Fayer Jun 1987

An Exploration Of Conscious And Instinctive Concepts Within Ceramic Sculpture, Pamela Jayne Fayer

Theses

This thesis report describes the driving force behind my ceramic sculpture, a pursuit of form reflecting conscious and instinctive concepts in art. Each piece, a created situation removed somewhat from the context of the visual and expected, calls attention to the processes by which the human species functions. The environments created program a controlled ituation that evokes viewer response as they add to and heighten the illusions of real situations. The drama of these sculptural realities is further intensified by being life-sized. An intention of the work is not to function as the object it visually represents, but to explore …

Dye Image Stability Of Polaroid Time Zero Supercolor Prints, Anthony Zych Jun 1987

Dye Image Stability Of Polaroid Time Zero Supercolor Prints, Anthony Zych

Theses

This paper discusses research on an automatic focusing system for IC-linewidth measuring instruments. The instrument incorporates a collimated light source, a device to move a sample in small, precise increments, and a charge-coupled device. The autofocusing model would measure the step-height to a focus position. Thickness of samples on an enlarged scale were measured to verify the feasibility of this device.

Personal Vessels, Keith Cullen Jun 1987

Personal Vessels, Keith Cullen

Theses

Ideas relating to ritual and ceremony have interested me for some time, and the visual possibilities of things archaeological, and their potential for the expression of ritual ideas seemed to be the best combination to express how I felt about precious objects, containment and the vessel. I summarized these thoughts in my thesis proposal: I intend to create a group of objects that relate closed vessel forms to archaeological or ritual characteristics. I will use glass and, when appropriate, other media. This report will define and explain my point of view on each of the issues in the proposal, illustrate …
