The Illawarra Rainforests: An Historical, Floristic And Environmental Study Of Their Distribution And Ecology, Kevin Gibson Mills
The Illawarra Rainforests: An Historical, Floristic And Environmental Study Of Their Distribution And Ecology, Kevin Gibson Mills
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This study presents a detailed analysis of the structure, floristic pattern and environment of the Illawarra rainforests and also evaluates their relationships with rainforests elsewhere in Australia. The results presented here illustrate the fact that the district's rainforests can be viewed as a part of a continuum of rainforest vegetation throughout eastern Australia, with links to those well to the north and to the south. This research contributes to a national effort, over recent years, to more fully understand Australian rainforests.
The rainforest vegetation found in the Illawarra district represents one of five major areas of rainforest in New South …
A History Of The Clothing And Allied Trades Union, B. L. Ellem
A History Of The Clothing And Allied Trades Union, B. L. Ellem
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis explores the history of clothing trades' unionism in Australia from its origins in the nineteenth-century until 1967. From 1907 that history is the history of the Clothing and Allied Trades' Union, an organisation established in that year under the aegis of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration.
The Introduction establishes explicit organising questions and themes and locates them within current debates about labour history. The Introduction asks the question: 'what is the Clothing Trades' Union?' The thesis examines how this question has been answered by unionists themselves and it examines the circumstances under which those solutions have …

An Appraisal Of The Tekken Test, Alan Lionel Wingrove
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Literature relevant to the weldability of steel by manual metal arc welding has been reviewed. In particular, the process of manual metal arc welding has been examined and current theoretical models that have been developed to predict the structure of the weldment are discussed. Weld defects, particularly hydrogen assisted cold cracking of the heat affected zone (HAZ) are discussed and a review of weldability tests relevent to HAZ cracking has been made. The Japanese developed Tekken Test has been examined in detail and the relevance of Cracking Index measurements has been analysed.
The effects that variations to the extrinsic welding …
Modelling Of Stormwater Quality In Byarong Creek, C. J. Woodward
Modelling Of Stormwater Quality In Byarong Creek, C. J. Woodward
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Byarong Creek in the illawarra region is typical of many coastal streams which commence in a predominantly natural escarpment and drain across urbanized lowlands into a coastal lake or directly to the sea. In this present study the variation of suspended sediment and soiute concentrations in the upland catchment of Byarong Creek is presented for ten, well documented storm events. Rainfall and flow were continuously recorded for each storm event and water samples were collected from the beginning to the end of each storm at half hourly intervals and analysed for suspended solids (nonfiltrable residues) and total dissolved solids (electrical …

Optimisation Of Transformer Tap Settings On Primary Radial Distribution Systems, Brian Albert Richardson
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The determination of tap settings for zone and distribution transformers within primary radial distribution systems is important to ensure customer voltages are always maintained within limits irrespective of system load. The thesis describes a computer programme which can analyse the performance of primary radial distribution systems comprising of zone and distribution transformers. The programme can be used to determine the optimum tap settings of both zone and distribution transformers to ensure that customer supply voltages are always within limits irrespective of system load. The computer programme presented Is fully applicable to any primary radial distribution system where zone transformers have …
Model Studies Of Gas Flow Effects On The Stockline Of A Bell-Less Charged Blast Furnace, Patricia Jeune Eshman
Model Studies Of Gas Flow Effects On The Stockline Of A Bell-Less Charged Blast Furnace, Patricia Jeune Eshman
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Detailed analyses of the effects of air flow on the stockline of a l/17th model of the ironmaking blast furnace with a Paul Wurth hopper and top were carried out. Sinter and coke layers were separately charged against air flow rates from zero to 0.372m3/s. Different particle sizes for sinter and coke were selected in order to exaggerate the individual behaviour of each material. Coke particle sizes ranged from -8.0+6.3mm to -4.0+3.15mm and sinter particle sizes ranged from -2.5+2.0mm to -1.0+0.5mm. Thermistors were used to record above burden velocity profiles. The experimental data were analysed by theories of segregation and …
Numerical Methods For The Navier-Stokes Equations With Reference To The Driven Cavity Problem, Mark Gregory Tatam
Numerical Methods For The Navier-Stokes Equations With Reference To The Driven Cavity Problem, Mark Gregory Tatam
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
A number of formulations for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are given with reference to steady state incompressible flow. The driven cavity problem is used as a numerical test case for the methods examined. A number of finite difference and finite element schemes have been used to reduce the problem to a form suitable for numerical computation. Convergence of the iterative procedures for the solution of the non-linear systems of equations is often difficult, frequently requiring very fine meshes and accurate starting points for the iterative techniques used.
Developmental Changes In The Membrane Fatty Acids Of Rats And The Role Of The Thyroid, Namita Sen
Developmental Changes In The Membrane Fatty Acids Of Rats And The Role Of The Thyroid, Namita Sen
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The role of the thyroid in developmental changes in membrane fatty acids was examined in the rat. Three tissues were studied in euthyroid and hypothyroid rats, the tissues were liver, heart and brain. Hypothyroidism was acheived by providing pregnant and young rats with drinking water containing 0.05% PTU. Both euthyroid and hypothyroid rats were killed at 1, 5, 15 and 25 days of age as well as adult rats. The following parameters were measured in both groups ; plasma T^ and T3 concentrations, body weight, tissue weights, phospholipid content of tissues, fatty acid composition of phospholipids isolated from these tissues.
The Politics Of Science: The Establishment Of The Australian Animal Health Laboratory, Pam Scott
The Politics Of Science: The Establishment Of The Australian Animal Health Laboratory, Pam Scott
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Decisions by governments involving the funding and application of science and technology are increasing in complexity. Paradoxically, there is an increasing demand for greater public participation in these decisions. There are a number of reasons for this: the recognition that science and technology can have far-reaching implications and consequences and may involve considerable risks, high costs, and ethical, moral and environmental considerations. Furthermore, there has been a growing distrust, or at least a questioning, of the authority and neutrality of science and the credibility and trustworthiness of scientific institutions. The establishment of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory with its long, …

Mix Design Of Rice Husk Ash Concrete: An Australian Experience, Nelson Semaan
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Research carried out in various parts of the world, has. led to the conclusion that rice husk ash (RHA) a pozzolanic material can be used as partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in making concrete.
Recently a new mix design procedure has been established in which two parameters are identified. They are the strength correlation factor, e, and the differential lubrication constant, f, both of which can be obtained by routine laboratory tests. This design procedure has been proved to be reliable for RHA produced at the Asian Institute of Technology. (AIT) in Thailand. The applicability of this new …
Osmoregulation In Cyanobacteria, Mark Alexander Mackay
Osmoregulation In Cyanobacteria, Mark Alexander Mackay
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This study was undertaken as an initial investigation of osmoregulation in Cyanobacteria with particular reference to the use of organic osmoregulatory solutes and consequently to examine any physiological basis for the classification according to habitat made by Geitler in 1932. Cyanobacteria from marine and freshwater environments were readily available from culture collections, but because very few hypersaline strains were available, a number of cyanobacteria were isolated from hypersaline environments in Australia.
Aspects Of Source Rock And Reservoir Potential Of The Port Campbell Area, Otway Basin, Victoria, H. Panggabean
Aspects Of Source Rock And Reservoir Potential Of The Port Campbell Area, Otway Basin, Victoria, H. Panggabean
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Sedimentary sequences in the Port Campbell area range from the Early Cretaceous to Pliocene in age. Two major groups are distinguished in the Cretaceous sequences. The Otway Group was deposited in a braided river fluviatile environment which is unconformable overlain by the fluvio-deltaic to shallow marine sequences of the Sherbrook Group. The Tertiary sequences are divided into Wangerrip Group (paralic to deltaic and shallow marine), Nirrandra Subgroup and Heytesbury Group (both marine environments)• The present study of organic petrology gives an assessment of organic matter type and abundance, and the rank of possible petroleum source rocks in the Port Campbell …

Unemployed Youth In The Urban Illawarra, Ron Mehmet
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis examines a number of aspects of youth unemployment in the Urban Illawarra, one of Australia's high-unemployment regions. A number of questions are posed:
Who are the young unemployed in this region? What sorts of lifestyles do they lead? How and how hard do they search for work? What do they think of their prospects of finding employment? What attitudes do they hold toward employers and toward the institutions with which they come in contact?
Answers were sought to these questions using data generated from interviews of 81 people aged 15-24 years, currently unemployed and belonging to the Community …
A Study Of The Structure And Properties Of Some Polynuclear Transition Metal Complexes, Gary Roy Erickson
A Study Of The Structure And Properties Of Some Polynuclear Transition Metal Complexes, Gary Roy Erickson
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Twenty two binuclear copper(ll) complexes based on the ligand 1,3-bis(salicylaldimine)propan-2-ol, (SAL-DPLH3), have been prepared as model compounds for the structure and function of the Type(lll) copper site found in Hemocyanins and Tyrosinase. The complexes are divided into four basic groups, depending on, (1) the type of bridging molecule and/or (2) adducts of the phenylacetate bridged complex. One of these complexes is the superoxide (02-) bridged complex, prepared by a novel synthetic method.
The infra-red and visible spectra of the complexes were determined as well as their magnetic properties. The crystal structures of [Cu2(SAL-DPL)pz] …
A Matrix Manipulation Method Using Phase Shifted Sinewaves For Real-Time Robot Control, T. Vu-Dinh
A Matrix Manipulation Method Using Phase Shifted Sinewaves For Real-Time Robot Control, T. Vu-Dinh
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This work involves the theoretical development of a new realtime matrix manipulation method and the practical proof of the new theory. There is a need for such a method because it has not yet proved possible to provide non-recursive solutions to robot dynamic problems in real-time. This is because the matrix products and matrix derivatives required are, as is well known, too time consuming to numerically compute in real-time, due to the large number of additions and multiplications involved in the matrix manipulation.
It is shown that the partial orthonormality of the standard Denavit/Hartenberg matrices used in the robot control …
A Galerkin Finite Element Solution Of The Time Dependent Reynolds Equation For The Rectangular Gas Slider Bearing, Yit-Kim Yap
A Galerkin Finite Element Solution Of The Time Dependent Reynolds Equation For The Rectangular Gas Slider Bearing, Yit-Kim Yap
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The study of gas as a Lubricant between two non-paraUel rigid surfaces in relative motion is a particular case of viscous compressibLe fluid flow under restrictive conditions. MathematicalLy, this physical phenomenon is governed by Reynolds equation which is a non-linear partial di f ferent iai equation of parabolic type. Closed form solutions are rare, excepting special cases, usually of a simplified problem. Previous numerical solutions have mainly used the method of finite differences but recent studies have employed the finite element method to solve the time-independent Reynolds equation. However, as for the time-dependent case, it appears this is the first …
Number Sequences And Phyllotaxis, Tony Peter Van Ravenstein
Number Sequences And Phyllotaxis, Tony Peter Van Ravenstein
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis is largely concerned with the study of phyllotaxis (leaf arrangement) in plants. Most higher order plants exhibit a remarkable degree of regularity in the positioning of their leaves. In a sunflower, for instance, one can perceive two sets of opposed spirals which each partition the set of florets. Intriguingly, the numbers of spirals are almost certainly consecutive members of the Fibonacci sequence (Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2, n >= 2, F0 = 0, F1 = 1). This pattern manifests itself in 95% of those plants which produce their leaves sequentially.
Austenite Recrystallisation And Ferrite Formation In Hot Rolled Titanium Microalloyed Steels, Satish Misra
Austenite Recrystallisation And Ferrite Formation In Hot Rolled Titanium Microalloyed Steels, Satish Misra
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The effect of titanium on austenite recrystallisation and ferrite formation after single pass hot rolling has been investigated in low carbon 0.076 and 0.052 wt% Ti steels having Ti in excess of that for the stoichiometric TiN composition. Rolling reductions were given in the range 10-60% in temperature range 850-1100°C and the deformed samples were held at the rolling temperature up to 1800 sec in order to study the progress of recrystallisation. The deformed austenite was transformed isothermally to ferrite at 690°C for up to 1800 sec. The kinetics of both austenite recrystallisation and ferrite formation have been compared quantitatively …
A Structural Analysis Of The Relationship Between Programme, Harmony And Form In The Symphonic Poems Of Franz Liszt, Keith Thomas Johns
A Structural Analysis Of The Relationship Between Programme, Harmony And Form In The Symphonic Poems Of Franz Liszt, Keith Thomas Johns
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
This thesis examines the central concern in an analysis of the symphonic poems of Franz Liszt, that is, the relationship between programme, harmony and form. In order to make a thorough and clear analysis of this relationship a structural/semiotic analysis has been developed as the analysis of best fit. Historically it has been fashionable to see Liszt's symphonic poems in terms of sonata form or a form only making sense in terms of the attached programme. Both of these ideas are critically examined in this analysis.
The authenticity and history of the written programmes has been discussed and an analysis of …
Analytical Studies On Australian Shale Oils, C. E. Rovere
Analytical Studies On Australian Shale Oils, C. E. Rovere
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
New analytical methods were developed for the analysis of shale oil. They included two for the complete chemical class separation of shale oil, one for the resolution of 1-6 ring aromatic hydrocarbons and one for the quantitation of nitriles by infrared spectrophotometry (IR). The first chemical class separation scheme was an extension of an existing method and employed a combination of acid and base extraction and open column chromatography. The fractions collected comprised alkanes, alkenes, n-alkadienes, n-alkylmonoaromatics,
Technology Transfer: The Role Played The United States Bureau Of Reclamation In The Development Of The Snowy Mountains Scheme, Ross Dill
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Technology permeates and is an integral part of the whole social, economic, cultural and political fabric of society. The state of the technology which exists at a particular point in time is, amongst other things, the product of many individual decisions and preferences by governments, industry, individuals and the community. Whilst some technology involves substantially new developments, much of it is evolutionary and occurs largely out of sight. The same is true of the process of Technology Transfer which at its most fundamental level involves the movement of knowledge across boundaries. The processes and methods of technology transfer vary according …
Mental Rehearsal And Skill Acquisition In Sports, Jim Sheedy
Mental Rehearsal And Skill Acquisition In Sports, Jim Sheedy
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Mental rehearsal is thought to have positive effects upon the learning and retention of gross motor skills such as those demanded in many sports. A field study using 30 participants from the sport of lawn bowls failed to demonstrate a statistically significant benefit from the use of mental rehearsal in the performance of their skill. As minimal instruction, training and control accompanied the field experiment a more stringently run study was conducted to establish the extent to which mental rehearsal may effect the acquisition of motor skills.
New Directions In Contemporary Music Theatre, Lynette Frances Williams
New Directions In Contemporary Music Theatre, Lynette Frances Williams
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
Initial research In Australia Into attitudes of personnel Involved In the generation and realization of contemporary Music Theatre/Opera, revealed opinions that the Nineteen Eighties represented a period of consolidation for the genre In the wake of the tremendous advances made since World War 11. The author was concerned that this consolidation process was, In fact, harbouring 'backward-looking' attitudes and that new Ideas which would ensure the future existence of the genre were not being explored. Further research was undertaken In England to establish current opinions as to what makes artistically and financially viable Music Theatre/ Opera for audiences of today. …
Massim Art: A Review Of The Visual Arts Of The Massim Area, Their Development, Diffusion And Distinction, Susan Cochrane
Massim Art: A Review Of The Visual Arts Of The Massim Area, Their Development, Diffusion And Distinction, Susan Cochrane
University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016
The perception of Massim art by members of Massim societies is contrasted with the conceptual framework from which Europeans have viewed and commented on their forms of creative expression since late last century. In particular, the recognition now emerging that there is a system of visual communication with layers of encoded meaning contained in the carved and painted designs of master carvers on canoe prow boards leads to the characterisation of sets of canoe prow carvings as the first steps towards a better understanding of this system of communication.
The similarity of design motifs occuring on some rock art sites, …
