Price Relationships Between South Dakota Wheat Markets, Destination And Futures Markets, Tyler J. Stowater May 1986

Price Relationships Between South Dakota Wheat Markets, Destination And Futures Markets, Tyler J. Stowater

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota wheat prices are determined by a complex arbitrage process among commodity complexes, domestic and international destinations, and futures markets. South Dakota's two major classes of wheat, spring wheat and winter wheat, must compete against other classes of wheat and other grains for specific industrial uses. The domestic processing of South Dakota wheat happens primarily outside the state. These domestic markets must compete with international markets. Finally, the futures markets provide a pricing system for arbitrage over time, place and wheat class. The purpose of this thesis is to quantify these relationships. The research objectives, methodology, and sources of …

Effect Of Level Of Exercise Of Self-Care Agency And Selected Pain Treatment Modalities In Surgical Patients, Candice Pederson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Imagine being in severe pain. Imagine having significant pain for an extended period of time. Imagine being dependent on others for the relief of this pain. And imagine the anxiety associated with the uncertainty of not knowing pain relief will come when it is needed. The preceding are common occurrences among those persons facing illness, injury or surgery. The anxiety surrounding the fear that this pain will not be relieved can augment the pain itself. Post-operative pain can lead to complications such as pneumonia, atelectasis, and immobility. For example, research has indicated that measures which decrease pain may increase lung …

This research attempted to investigate if there was any difference between Japanese and American students studying at universities in the United States in the response to some words carrying Christian concepts. This study used the semantic differential technique to measure the intensity of response that individuals have toward the concepts. The following null hypotheses relative to Christian concepts were tested for this study: 1. There is no difference in response to the concept "Prayer" between Japanese and American students. 2. …

Use Of An Intact Soil Core - Acetylene Reduction Assay To Estimate In Situ Nitrogen Fixation Rates, Christi Ann Nordstrom May 1986

Use Of An Intact Soil Core - Acetylene Reduction Assay To Estimate In Situ Nitrogen Fixation Rates, Christi Ann Nordstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Availability of nitrogen to the plant is a paramount concern in agricultural production today. Crop yields are most often dependent on the level of available nitrogen than any other element. Nitrogen can be supplied to the soil environment by either fertilizers or by the natural processes of decomposition of nitrogen containing compounds and biological fixation of nitrogen. The most abundant source of nitrogen on the earth is the atmosphere. Although the atmosphere is approximately 79% nitrogen, this form is generally unavailable for plant use. Atmospheric nitrogen contains two nitrogen atoms held together by a triple bond which must be reduced …

A Comparison Of Leadership Styles Between College Physical Education Instructors And College Football Coaches, Randy R. Megard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of leadership in physical education and athletics is a relatively new area but some groundwork has already been laid. Knickerbocker considered the primary function of a leader to be organizing the activities of individuals toward the accomplishment of some end through controlling the means for the satisfaction of relevant needs of members of that group. Leadership is personality in action under group conditions. It includes dominant personality traits of an individual and receptive personality qualities of many persons. Many terms and classifications have been used to describe leaders. Bogardus for example described leadership in relation to other people …

Selenoamino Acids In Wheat And High-Selenium Yeast, Jinq Lih Lee. Lee May 1986

Selenoamino Acids In Wheat And High-Selenium Yeast, Jinq Lih Lee. Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium has been known to cause toxicity problems in animals since 1928. These problems arise when the element occurs in the soil at reasonably high concentration and is taken up by plants. Animals consuming the plants may then develop certain toxicity signs. More recently selenium has been shown to be an essential nutrient because of its involvement in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (Rotruck et al., 1973). Evidence has been accumulating that the element may even help protect against cancer in humans (Shamberger, 1970). Consequently, there has been great interest in knowing about the content of selenium in various foods and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our curiosity about how an area has developed into what it is today invariably draws our attention to its initial situation. In the United States, the frontier serves as the logical locus upon which questions such as the latter can be laid. Frederick Jackson Turner has popularized the frontier concept by elevating its place in the history of the American national development. What Turner's frontier thesis has for special offer to geography lies in the observation of the frontier as a discrete areal unit, set off, as it was, from the settled area due to the differential pace in the …

Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On Chicken Fats, Myung Chul Kim May 1986

Effects Of Gamma Irradiation On Chicken Fats, Myung Chul Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food irradiation is a process which may provide an alternative to existing conventional food processes. It will not completely replace or substitute for other processes, but its unique qualities offer an additional processing option. A major difficulty with food irradiation is that it can potentially affect all food, and thus it touches on all food issues - from affecting the physical characteristics of food to labeling and consumer acceptance. Research directed toward the use of radiation for the preservation of foods began in 1945. Most of the studies have been government sponsored, at least partly because the 1985 food additives …

Soil is a heterogenous mixture of humus and minerals containing both immobilized enzymes and occluded microbial cells. Each of the organic and mineral fractions in soil has a special influence on enzyme activity. Soil enzyme activity results from accumulated enzymes and from the enzymatic activity of proliferating microorganisms. Microbial populations have developed to the point that short residual times have occurred for an applied pesticide. The target pest is not controlled and these soils are referred to as “problem" soils. The objective of this study was to ascertain the relationship between soil enzyme activity and pesticide persistence in soils with …

Role-Taking And Power In Health Care, Dana Charles De Witt Apr 1986

Role-Taking And Power In Health Care, Dana Charles De Witt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on differential role-taking ability between physicians and nurses. Many sociologists note, subordinates are in positions of lower structural power than superordinates and therefore must employ other means of control. These other strategies of control come from a person’s own interpersonal skills. This source of power is referred to as personal influence and is considered by Franks, Thomas et. al. Wrong, to be more situated in nature than structural power which is viewed as having a more enduring quality. Most persons, regardless of the power of the position they hold.in a given social context, must interact and role-take …
