Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon Jan 1986

Parsing Routines In Syntactic Processing: The Effect Of Expected Word Order On Sentence Comprehension, Ann Dibella Jablon

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Two experiments were conducted to test the SVO Expectancy Hypothesis. This hypothesis embodies three claims: (a) the syntactic parsing device has an initial expectation for the SVO (syntactically defined) structure, (b) the parser reads or tracks the syntactic information in the utterance to confirm or adjust its predictions, and (c) the parser has the ability to make on-line revisions based on the syntactic information contained within the utterance.

In the first experiments using tachistoscopic presentation, 75 sentences representing 15 different sentence types were read by subjects. Each type varied in structure and in the clarity of markers, used to indicate …

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager Jan 1986

Viewers' Perceptions Of Gender Roles On Television, Susan Barbara Prager

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation develops and applies a method for studying viewers' perceptions of gender roles on television. Two hypotheses–selective perception and oversocialization–were tested. In contrast to other studies which rely on subjects' long-term memories, subjects were shown a tape of One Day at a Time, a popular television show, immediately prior to responding to a questionnaire on the show. Subjects were also asked for demographic data and administered the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test. T-Tests and correlations were done, using groups formed around the sex role attitudes of the subjects (as measured by the Demplewolff Sex Role Attitude Test), as …

String Quartet, No. 2, Edward M. Smaldone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Three movements (Vibrant, Exalted, Recitative: Scherzo) for two violins, viola, and 'cello. Part I of this dissertation is an essay entitled "Linear Analysis of Selected Posttonal Works of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward an Application of Schenkerian Concepts to Music of the Posttonal Era."

Working At Home And Being At Home: The Interaction Of Microcomputers And The Social Life Of Households, Jamie L. Horwitz Jan 1986

Working At Home And Being At Home: The Interaction Of Microcomputers And The Social Life Of Households, Jamie L. Horwitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Not until the recent upsurge of interest in microcomputers and home work has attention been devoted to the household as a setting for technical learning and invention, or organizational and independent work. Drawing upon theoretical implications of research on industrial technology and the household, this study contributes to the development of an empirical basis for understanding the first ten years of microcomputer use at home.

The environmental approach to this psychological study includes two stages. In the first, a survey and content analysis of over 400 articles in mainstream periodicals and national newspapers revealed that since 1976 the representation of …

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer Jan 1986

Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Recent theoretical developments in the theory of inhomogeneous media have enabled Physicists to explore various properties of random composites. We demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to the treatment of electrochemical systems, specifically porous structures. A Random Network Model is introduced to represent the porous electrode immersed in electrolyte, and using numerical simulation the a.c. impedance behavior of the system is explored. We explore how various compositional and structural parameters contribute to the electrical properties of the system. The topology of our model is analyzed, and the effect of fractal structures on impedance behavior is considered. To examine the …

Linear Analysis Of Selected Posttonal Works Of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward An Application Of Schenkerian Concepts To Music Of The Posttonal Era (And) String Quartet, No. 2 (Original Composition), Edward M. Smaldone Jan 1986

Linear Analysis Of Selected Posttonal Works Of Arnold Schoenberg: Toward An Application Of Schenkerian Concepts To Music Of The Posttonal Era (And) String Quartet, No. 2 (Original Composition), Edward M. Smaldone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The analysis of posttonal music is approached through a method (which originated with Henry Weinberg) utilizing Schenker's approach to tonal music as a conceptual model. This method differs from all other methods of analysis in that voice leading is combined with a unique approach to nontonal harmony. The presentation of the analytical method is given a historical perspective through the analysis of "Jimbo's Lullaby," by Debussy. There follows detailed analyses of Op. 15 no. 1 (The Book of the Hanging Gardens) and Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19 by Arnold Schoenberg.

Part II of the dissertation is an …
