The Effects Of Program Change On The Social Climate At Boys Town, Loren E. Brooks Nov 1978

The Effects Of Program Change On The Social Climate At Boys Town, Loren E. Brooks

Student Work

An attempt was made to determine what the effects of implementing a child care program, the Teaching-Family Model, would be on the social climate of a midwestern youth care institution, Boys Town. The Community Oriented Programs Environment Scale (COPES) was implemented four times over an 18-month period to assess if changes in the social climate at Boys Town were taking place and, if changes were occurring, what they possibly were due to. The results of the study were four-fold. First, the data suggested that changes in the social climate were occurring. Next, it was determined that these changes were more …

The Development Of Compensation And Conservation: Young Children's Understanding Of Number, Length, And Liquid Quantity., David J. Welsh Aug 1978

The Development Of Compensation And Conservation: Young Children's Understanding Of Number, Length, And Liquid Quantity., David J. Welsh

Student Work

As water is poured from one container to another, its quantity remains unchanged, no matter what size or shape of container it is poured into. Similarly, five objects do not become more or less simply because they are grouped together or spread apart. Quantity remains invariant—is conserved—under such irrelevant transformations. Interestingly enough, Paiget (1952) has shown that children below the age of six or seven fail to manifest any understanding of conservation. Such children indicate, for example, that if the water in a standard container is poured into a narrower, taller container it becomes “more” water because it rises to …

Modification Of Locus Of Control In First And Fifth Graders: A Comparison Of Change Techniques, Gary Kinstlinger Aug 1978

Modification Of Locus Of Control In First And Fifth Graders: A Comparison Of Change Techniques, Gary Kinstlinger

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative effectiveness of three training programs on internality in an academic setting and a generalized setting and on reflectivity-impulsivity. The training procedures consisted of behavioral intervention, achievement training, and a combination of the two. The subjects were 48 first and fifth grade children (24 in each grade) from a largely middle-class school. Each of the three treatment groups consisted of four males and four females who were assigned to the groups on the basis of a median split performed on pretest Intellecutal Achievement Responsibility test scores. A group of eight students …

Training Two Parents For The Price Of One: Teaching A Parent To Train A Spouse In Child Management Skills, Susan A. Adubato Aug 1978

Training Two Parents For The Price Of One: Teaching A Parent To Train A Spouse In Child Management Skills, Susan A. Adubato

Student Work

This study analyzed the training of a mother, through the use of verbal and written instructions, modelling and immediate feedback, to increase the independent dressing skills of her developmentally delayed son. In addition, it analysed the mother's ability to teach the child management techniques to her husband with no assistance from the clinician, as well as the generalization of parent training to two other child skills - eating and toy use. The parent training package, introduced sequentially across two components of the mother's behavior in a multiple baseline design, led to desired changes in the mother’s behavior in the dressing …

The Effects Of Mental Age And Chronological Age On Conservation And Classification In Normal And Retarded Children, William J. Doucette Aug 1978

The Effects Of Mental Age And Chronological Age On Conservation And Classification In Normal And Retarded Children, William J. Doucette

Student Work

The effect of experience, as measured by CA, and intelligence on conservation and classification ability was systematically investigated, using groups of retarded and normal subjects matched on MA and CA. Three groups of subjects were matched on a MA of 72 months: a group of 12-year old retarded subjects, a group of 16-year old retarded subjects, and a group of 6-year old normal subjects. The 6-year old normal group was also matched on CA with a mentally retarded group whose MA was 36 months. Three conservation tasks (some-all, a resemblance sorting, hierarchical classification) using both routine test items and real …

A Professional Union: An Exploratory Study, Edward L. Suntrup

Student Work

One of the areas of white-collar unionization which is increasingly making itself felt in the United States is that of professional union-ization. The three professional occupational groups that have been most successful in this respect have been the engineers, nurses, and teachers (Cf. Taylor, 1968).

Graphic Feedback And Instructions As A "Booster Shot" Following Didactic Parent Training, Michael R. Mcdonald Jul 1978

Graphic Feedback And Instructions As A "Booster Shot" Following Didactic Parent Training, Michael R. Mcdonald

Student Work

This study analyzed the effectiveness of a simple "booster” training procedure for refining a parent's skill in child management following a clinical training package. Initially, a mother was introduced to the procedures of behavior management through individual didactic sessions in her home, in order to help her reduce the oppositional behaviorof her Down's Syndrome son. This training resulted in moderate but unstable improvements in the parent's use of child management techniques, and in her child’s response to them, with gradual deterioration in parent and child performances over sessions. To refine the parent’s skill in child management, a simple "booster” training …

Nonverbal Communication: Its Importance In Salesmanship, Kenneth Paul De Meuse May 1978

Nonverbal Communication: Its Importance In Salesmanship, Kenneth Paul De Meuse

Student Work

It has been "common knowledge" for decades that verbal skills are necessary in selling. Many authors stress the importance of verbal skills a successful salesperson must possess (Feldman, 1974; Jones & Healey, 1973; Perry, 1975; Townsend, 1966). In this study, however, we are concerned with the nonverbal skills a salesperson must possess. How vital are nonverbal skills to a salesperson's performance? More specifically, are nonverbal skills even more important in sales success than verbal skills?

Employability Skills Training For Displaced Homemakers Measured Via The Practice Interview, Carolyne Grimm Mierswa Jan 1978

Employability Skills Training For Displaced Homemakers Measured Via The Practice Interview, Carolyne Grimm Mierswa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two groups of females participated in a practice interview designed to measure the effectiveness of assertive communication taught during a two week program for Displaced Homemakers. The Experimental Group, selected according to CETA criteria, were interviewed after receiving training. The Control Group were women similar in all relevant respects with the exception of having worked for pay outside the home within the past three years. The structured interview was designed to incorporate the same areas for evaluation as would potential employers in a real selection process. Instructions to provide motivation, or demand characteristics, for both groups were contained in a …
