Incumbency And Turnover In United States House Elections 1934-1974, Vincent A. Borlaug

Theses and Dissertations

This work aims at laying the groundwork for a new approach to Congressional elections: turnover theory. Turnover is simply the change in membership of a Congressional chamber, and occurs in two forms: short-run turnover, in which seats change hand3 over a single election, and long-run turnover, in which incoming classes of Congressmen are decimated over several successive elections. The former is referred to in the body of this work as simply "turnover," the latter as "attrition."

The work is based on original data gathered from the Biographical Directory of the American Congress and other sources. It tests relationships between factors …

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey Jul 1976

Reapportionment : An Oregon History And A Critique Of Baker Vs Carr, Ann Frissell Lackey

Dissertations and Theses

This study explores the ways in which federal and state authorities have sought to deal with a difficult problem of political power in the context of the U.S. Constitution. Oregon reapportionment history offers an appropriate introduction to a critique of the national reapportionment decisions of Baker vs Carr and Reynolds vs Sims. Its Constitution stipulated population and the ratio derived from a population based formula were the means by which apportionment was to be determined and noncompliance had been particularly evident from 1933 to 1952. Also, by the initiative process and a decision by the Oregon Supreme Court, Oregon had …

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington Jan 1976

Criticism Of The Liberal Intellectual In The Political Fiction Of Mary Mccarthy, Terrill Hyde Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For more than thirty years, Mary McCarthy has served as the conscience of the liberal American intellectual. McCarthy’s method of writing is satire, and she treats both her sympathetic and unsympathetic characters satirically. The characters in her fiction are generally liberal intellectuals who follow one of two patterns. The sympathetic characters are those who, despite their flaws, endeavor to be conscientious, objective and truth seeking. They are plagued by self-doubt and constant awareness o their own limitations. In contrast, her unsympathetic characters are egotistical and self-deluding. Their intellectual capabilities are bent not toward fulfillment of their liberal and humanitarian ideals, …

Sectarianism And The Development Of Elementary Education In New South Wales, 1788-1918, Kenneth Davies

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The purpose of this dissertation is to trace the influence of sectarianism upon the development of elementary education in New South Wales between 1788 and 1918. Because to date none of the historians, social scientists, or sociologists studying sectarianism has constructed a precise and universally applicable definition, a pragmatic approach has been adopted to the phenomenon. For the purposes of this study, sectarianism has'been taken,to mean that fanaticism or narrowness of religious belief which', because of real or imagined attacks upon religious conscience, promotes conflict between the sects. Although the various sects of Protestants differed amongst themselves, •in general they …

Task of the Project

The task of this project was to prepare a report on the present condition of the Euro-American Seventh-day Adventist church focusing on six such congregations in the Greater New York Conference. By studying their historical, cultural, and environmental background, the writer sought to determine whether the existence of such congregations, as separate units within the Seventh-day Adventist organization, was justified. And, on the basis of that investigation, to submit his recommendation in favor of their separate ethnic outreach among the groups they represent, or to recommend that they be incorporated with the English-speaking congregations of the …
