The Senate Small Business Committee During World War Ii, Catherine Neff Bugg Dec 1975

The Senate Small Business Committee During World War Ii, Catherine Neff Bugg

Student Work

That small business was essential to the American way of life was an unquestionable tenet of both liberals and conservatives in the government prior to and during the Second World War. Both political factions also agreed that the war needed to be won and that great sacrifices would be necessary in order to achieve that victory. Beyond these two basic areas of agreement, however, great divergence as to the methods to be used for conserving and protecting small business while fighting an all-out war for survival soon became apparent. Nowhere was this conflict more obvious than in the formation of …

The History Of Notre Dame Academy Omaha, Nebraska, Anita Rolenc

Student Work

"I give Him to you that you may make Him grow."· With these words, the Virgin Mary extended the Infant Jesus to the open arms of Blessed Alix Le Clerc. Since that vision in 1597, nearly four hundred years ago, the School Sisters de Notre Dame have carried on the work of education begun by Alix Le Clerc and a small band of women, under the direction of St. Peter Fourier. On Christmas night 1597, a new Religious Order came into being in Lorraine, France. From here the Congregation spread throughout Europe. In 1853 the Reverend Gabriel Schneider established the …

The World Herald's Editorial Reaction To The Spanish American War, Catharine Fogarty Aug 1975

The World Herald's Editorial Reaction To The Spanish American War, Catharine Fogarty

Student Work

The city of Omaha has three major newspapers in the second half on the nineteenth century. The Republican, as the name suggests, was the mouthpiece of the Republican Party. The Herald espoused the principles of the Democratic Party. Dedicated to the growth of the city, the Herald considered the Union Pacific to be a major business factor behind that growth. The third Omaha peer, the Bee, came into existence when its founder, Edward Rosewater, desired to mold public opinion in favor of the creation of a Board of Education. Organized on a partisan bias, all three papers took positions on …

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer May 1975

A History Of Mapleton, Utah To 1945, Ralph K. Harmer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mapleton, a small rural Utah community located on the benchlands between Hobble Creek Canyon and Spanish Fork Canyon fifty miles south of Salt Lake City, was settled in the late 1860s and early 1870s by Springvllle and Spanish Fork families who built their homes on their individual farms. These families did not follow traditional Mormon settlement patterns with a City of Zion plat as their guide; their community grew along quite different lines. Its inhabitants never heard a "call" nor did they have their land alloted to them by their church.

The Latter-day Saint Ward, established on the bench In …

National Efficiency And Social Planning In Britain, 1914-1921, Norman Richard Eder Feb 1975

National Efficiency And Social Planning In Britain, 1914-1921, Norman Richard Eder

Dissertations and Theses

Traditionally, improvements in the quality of life in Britain resulted from the temporary fusion of sometimes opposite interests which spurred Parliamentary action. Therefore, reform was rarely a party issue. Each reform question was treated separately and never as a part of a body of similar measures. Individuals were free to support or oppose particular reforms according to their own interests and motivations. The result of this lack of strong consistent reformist sentiment was a pattern of piece-meal legislative action with a notable absence of comprehensive social planning. The First World War, however, brought new challenges to British society. As the …

The Labyrinth Of Otherness : An Essay On Authoritarian Acquiescence In Mexico, Mary Elizabeth Scott

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this inquiry, the attempt is made first to see Mexico through the eyes of Octavio Paz, who in his essay, The Other Mexico: Critique of the Pyramid, considers the development of modern Mexico from a cultural, historical and political perspective and secondly to interface a universal archetype with the Mexican experience. Regarding the first endeavor, it is Paz’s intention to bring his nation to a better understanding of its own peculiar dilemmas and to indicate changes of attitudes essential for salutary future progress. It is true that as Mexico’s renowned poet, essayist, playwright, editor and diplomat, Paz treats the …

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher Jan 1975

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) is a lay church inasmuch as it has no professionally trained ministers. Because of this, the Chaplains Corps during World War II questioned whether members of the Mormon faith could serve effectively as chaplains. The answer to the effectiveness of Mormon chaplains is found in their performance as many received high praise from their superiors.
During the Second World War, the Mormon Church provided the military services with a total of 45 chaplains, and although only 45 served, they saw duty in all theaters of war and served at such major …

The Historical Development Of Wasatch Trails In Salt Lake County, Clyde Brian Hardy Jan 1975

The Historical Development Of Wasatch Trails In Salt Lake County, Clyde Brian Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

In this study investigation was made concerning the etiology of the foot trails that thread their way through Wasatch Forest lands in Salt Lake county. The time delimitation was 1847 to 1975.

The origin of the majority of these trails dates back to the nineteenth century and is closely tied to the efforts of pioneers who labored to wrest a living from semi-arid land. Early lumbering, livestock operations, mining activities, water collection systems, and pioneer recreation all provided impetus for trail development. In a sense these trails are a kind of anthology of human endeavor.

Passing into the twentieth century …

A History Of Kirtland Camp: Its Initial Purpose And Notable Accomplishments, Gordon Orville Hill

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a history of a group of Latter-day Saints who travelled from Kirtland, Ohio to Adam-ondi-Ahman, Caldwell County, Missouri during the late summer and early autumn, 1838. The group numbered between five and six hundred when they left Kirtland and had diminished to approximately half that many at the end of their journey.

The official name, "Kirtland Camp," was adopted by the group which was originally founded and governed by seven men, i.e. the Seventies Presidency in Kirtland.

The camp was organized to assist Church members who otherwise would have been unable to escape persecutions in Ohio. Camp …

From Empire To Dependence: The Evolution Of Turkish Underdevelopment, Doğu Ergil Jan 1975

From Empire To Dependence: The Evolution Of Turkish Underdevelopment, Doğu Ergil

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Both Turkish and western explanations of the decline and demise of the Turkish (Ottoman) Empire, and later, of the inability of Republican Turkey to become a developed polity have generally been of a superficial nature. To Western scholars, the Turks lacked the necessary qualities to become a civilized (Western) nation due partly to their “barbaric” past and partly to the incompatibility of Islamic culture with Western ideas and institutions. The Turkish thinkers on the other hand emphasized other explanations at different historical periods: the Ottoman scholars believed that the moral strength of the nation had loosened up and corrupt practices …

In each of the three principal sections of the thesis, the focus is on the dynamic rather than the static quality of the Society; on the interrelationship between the changing political environment and the changes in the Club's membership, leadership, strategy and tactics.

The first section of the thesis presents an account of the political, social, economic and intellectual forces which led to the outbreak of the Revolution of 1789 and contributed to …

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell Jan 1975

The Settlement And Development Of Wayne County, Utah, To 1900, Aldus Devon Chappell

Theses and Dissertations

Although John C. Fremont had traveled through Wayne County, Utah, in the winter of 1853-54, it was not until 1874 that the first herd of cattle was introduced to Rabbit Valley. Reports soon circulated that here was a new land, conducive to the raising of livestock, and in 1876 about a dozen families entered the valley and began settlement. Families that moved into this area came from various places. Each settler came to make a new life, and came independently of the others. In 1895 the population was nearly 2,000, and by 1970 it had dropped to 1,486.

The Church …

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake Jan 1975

The History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In South America, 1945-1960, Joel Alva Flake

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America between 1945 and 1960 shows growth in numbers of members and strength of those members. The church grew more than 1000 percent during those fifteen years and almost half of all South American branches came under the direction of local, native leadership. The three new missions organized were evidence of the growth being made. Church building was stepped up and Church literature in Spanish and Portuguese became plentiful.

Some problems encountered were opposition of the prevailing church, misunderstandings with government, and the inefficiency of transportation and …

History Of Four Mormon Landmarks In Western New York: The Joseph Smith Farm, Hill Cumorah, The Martin Harris Farm, And The Peter Whitmer, Sr., Farm, Rand H. Packer Jan 1975

History Of Four Mormon Landmarks In Western New York: The Joseph Smith Farm, Hill Cumorah, The Martin Harris Farm, And The Peter Whitmer, Sr., Farm, Rand H. Packer

Theses and Dissertations

As the church returned to Western New York in the early 1900s there was much prejudice against Mormonism. The twenty-four year mission of the Willard Bean family was instrumental in establishing a friendly atmosphere in the Palmyra, New York area and in regaining four historic land marks to the ownership of the Church.

It is still uncertain if the present Joseph Smith Sr., home was completed enough for the family to live in by the time the Angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith. Since 1881 the Sacred Grove was considered the woods where Joseph Smith had his First Vision. The term …

A Study Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Upper Canada, 1830-1850, Richard E. Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine the factors contributing to the rise and subsequent decline of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Upper Canada. Although the time period of this study spans from 1830 until 1850, the principal years of activity were from 1832 until 1840. An effort is made to discuss any major location wherein the Church made substantial progress.

The major contribution of the thesis lies in the effort to stage the Mormon drama against a Canadian background of changing social factors. During the times of greatest economic stagnation, political upheaval and …
