The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe Dec 1969

The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe

Honors Theses

The name "Levellers" applies to a political organization which functioned as a potent force in the politics of England in the late 1640s. During this period a fierce struggle for power was being fought, partly on an ideological level. The fighting of the first civil war had ended in 1646; the army of Parliament had defeated the royalist forces and had captured the King. In the wake of military victory, the various factions among the victors began to vie for power. In 1645 and 1646 tracts supporting the establishment of a representative democracy, the guarantee of civil and religious freedoms, …

The Ocean Resource: A Scenario For Its Control, Ronald Poitras Dec 1969

The Ocean Resource: A Scenario For Its Control, Ronald Poitras

Theses and Major Papers

As man expands his horizons on planet earth, he is beginning to turn increasingly to the oceans as a source of resources, and at a pace commensurate with the growth of his needs and his technical ability. Traditionally the deep sea has always been a "no man's land," an unlimited source of space to be traversed and used infrequently. A scarcity of natural resources and an abundance of human extensions (i.e. technology) are together making deep ocean seclusion a thing of the past. Increasing use of a particular resource is a limited space sooner or later implies an increasing need …

Costs And Efficiencies Of Model Meat Packing Plants In The Tennessee Valley, John P. Kuehn Dec 1969

Costs And Efficiencies Of Model Meat Packing Plants In The Tennessee Valley, John P. Kuehn

Doctoral Dissertations

The overall objective of this study was to generate short and long range planning data for combined beef and pork packing plants in the Tennessee Valley. The effects of prices received by packers for meat products and variations in plant utilization rates were also considered .

The general approach involved application of an economic engineering or synthetic cost analysis. Four kinds of plant operations (beef slaughter, beef boning, hog slaughter, and hog cutting and boning) were described so that each could be considered as an autonomous plant. Each operation had its own total cost function and was "constructed" in three …

Strength Properties Of Secondary Fibers Repulped Under Various Conditions, David J. Deyoung Dec 1969

Strength Properties Of Secondary Fibers Repulped Under Various Conditions, David J. Deyoung

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The inability of fibers to swell to their original extent is probably the largest single factor contributing to strength losses of repulped fibers. This lack of swelling lessens the number and strength of fiber to fiber bonds in the sheet formed. It is this fact which leads to the decreased mullen, tensile and stretch of the sheet, and the increased tearing resistance. This paper is a study of the effects of temperature, pH and surfactants on the strength properties of secondary fibers. It was shown that a surfactant is very detrimental to strength properties. While not affecting some strength properties, …

A Comparison Of Heritability Estimates Obtained By Different Methods, G. Srinivasan

Doctoral Dissertations

Records of birth weight, average daily gain and 120- day weight of 447 purebred Hampshire lambs in 19 sire groups born from 1952 to 1968 at the Main Experiment Station of The University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station were used to calculate estimates of heritability before and after least-squares adjustments of the records for the significant effects of age of dam, month of birth, sex of lamb, type of birth, type of rearing and year of birth. Estimates from unadjusted data were erratic and inexplicable, whereas, those from adjusted data were reasonable and consistently positive.

Estimates of heritability from regression …

Placental Transfer And Maternal-Fetal Utilization Of Manganese And Copper By Swine And Sheep, Charles T. Gamble Dec 1969

Placental Transfer And Maternal-Fetal Utilization Of Manganese And Copper By Swine And Sheep, Charles T. Gamble

Doctoral Dissertations

Both manganese and copper have been shown to be necessary for the normal functioning of the animal body, and although there is a vast quantity of information available from laboratory animals, little or no factual information is readily available on placental transfer or maternal-fetal utilization of these two minerals. For these reasons this study, utilizing 15 yearling gilts (73 fetuses) and 15 yearling ewes (13 fetuses), was initiated during the spring of 1968. Pregnant gilts and ewes were dosed with a single tracer level of radio-manganese and radio-copper for blood balance and subsequent tissue-organ distribution and placental transfer studies. Results …

The Mean In Statistics, Rex E. Babcock Dec 1969

The Mean In Statistics, Rex E. Babcock

Honors Theses

When one speaks of how statistics have been utilized in decades past there is much to say. However, it is even more astonishing when one speaks of the utilization of statistics today. The use of statistics is widespread virtually over all of the world today, and is put to use in such fields as surveys, census, psychometrics, and almost every business, vocation, and employment that may come to one's mind. But I wish to confine myself to the mean in statistics; I will even make another boundary on myself by discussing only the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, and …

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa Dec 1969

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa

Dissertations

Introduction

In our earlier work we demonstrated the usefulness of the acidcatalyzed reaction between N-(p -tolyl)diphenylketenimine (21) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the oxidation of secondary alcohols. This was exemplified by the oxidation of 2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and other secondary alcohols.1 We have now extended this procedure to the oxidation of hydroxy-steroids.

Alkynylamines or ynamines can be written in two resonance forms: R-C≡C-N R'2 and R-C=C=NR'2. Because of the close similarity between the latter structure and the structure of a ketenimine (R2C=C=N-R') and the ability of sulfoxide-ketenimine to effect the oxidation of secondary alcohols, we …
