This is a comparative study of the vegetation and soils of an exclosure in the mountain brush vegetation of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The exclosure was fenced and initially analyzed during the summers of 1949-1950. The study area is located in Pole Canyon in the Uinta National Forest, a few miles northeast of Provo, Utah. The dominant woody species of the vegetation in the exclosure are big toothed maple (Acer grandidentatum) and Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). After settlement of the area in and around Provo, Pole Canyon became overgrazed by livestock. Since 1949 the area has been protected from grazing. …

This study is an attempt to consolidate the information already known about the trees of Utah and to extend our knowledge of these trees. An intensive study was made of the available literature. The tree specimens of the herbaria of the Utah State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University and the Regional Office of the Forest Service at Ogden were examined. These studies were supplemented with extensive field work in various parts of the state. Forecasting the annual water supply in an arid area by using the water content of snow on watersheds on some particular date, such as April 1, has become a very useful practice. Although these forecasts have given results of great practical value, they have sometimes been considerably in error. Seeking to minimize error, forecasters have incorporated various additional data such as temperature and antecedent rain to improve the relation between snow measurement and measured runoff.

The retail feed industry has grown continually in importance during the past 60 years. Increased population has placed ever greater demands upon food production to feed our nation's people. During 1968, the average American consumed 80 pounds of beef, 63 pounds of pork, 8 pounds of veal, 4 pounds of lamb, 26 pounds of chicken, and 11 pounds of lard. This amounted to an annual per capita consumption of 188 pounds of red meat. With 173 million people to feed, vast quantities of livestock must be produced, finished, and marketed to satisfy our nation's needs.

With increasing pressure on economical production of crops, more fertilizers are being applied to the soil each year to increase crop yields. Economical production of crops with applications of fertilizer requires an evaluation of the essential elements of the various crops so applications of fertilizer will not exceed the law of diminishing returns.

The wool industry is important to the state of Utah, which was the sixth largest producing state in the United States in 1958. Wool growers in Utah received approximately $7,897,000 in sales proceeds and government payments for wool sold during the 1958 marketing year (12).¹

The Sharp Mountain area is situated in the southern part of the Bear River Range in Utah. The geology of the Bear River Range to the north of this area, in Utah and Idaho, has been mapped; however, prior to this study little was known about the Sharp Mountain area. The purpose of this investigation are as follows: (1) to map and describe the geology of the area, and (2) to relate the stratigraphic and structural features of the Sharp Mountain area to those of the surrounding region.

During the last two decades, Utah's market milk industry has changed from one of local processing and distribution by small-scale plants to one of state-wide distribution by large-scale dairies. At present, four large producer cooperatives control most of the state's market milk and six large processing plants accounts for more than 80 percent of the state's fluid milk sales.
