Predicting Treatment Outcome In Chemically Dependent Women: A Test Of Marlatt And Gordon's Relapse Model., Renee Marie Agnes. Cormier Jan 2000

Predicting Treatment Outcome In Chemically Dependent Women: A Test Of Marlatt And Gordon's Relapse Model., Renee Marie Agnes. Cormier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test and expand Marlatt and Gordon's (1985) Relapse Model using a sample of substance-abusing women. Marlatt and Gordon hypothesized that coping skills, positive expectancies, and self-efficacy would predict post-treatment substance use. They also hypothesized that individuals who experience the abstinence violation effect following an initial lapse would be at increased risk of further substance use. Variables representing issues relevant to women were added to the original model. Specifically, poly-drug addiction and experiences with physical and sexual abuse were hypothesized to be important in any relapse model applied to women. Questionnaires were administered …

Comparison Of The Psychosocial Typology Of Children With Below-Average Iq To That Of Children With Ld., Margaret Bridgette. Ralston Jan 2000

Comparison Of The Psychosocial Typology Of Children With Below-Average Iq To That Of Children With Ld., Margaret Bridgette. Ralston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the patterns of psychosocial functioning of children with learning problems who meet other commonly used criteria to define Learning Disabilities (LD) but whose Full Scale Intelligence Quotient (FSIQ) scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) fall below average. These children are referred to as having below average IQ (BAIQ). The psychosocial functioning of children with BAIQ was subtyped by the application of both Q-factor analysis and profile-matching to scores of the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC). The resulting typologies were compared to that of previously derived prototypes of psychosocial functioning of children with LD (Rourke …

A Volumetric Evaluation Of The Thalamus In High-Functioning Individuals With Autism Using Mri., Katherine D. Tsatsanis Jan 2000

A Volumetric Evaluation Of The Thalamus In High-Functioning Individuals With Autism Using Mri., Katherine D. Tsatsanis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism is widely accepted to be a genetically based neurodevelopmental disorder. At present, however, there is no consistent evidence of a specific gene, neural pathway, or brain region abnormality to account for its expression. A variety of theoretical models have been proposed, with a particular focus on regions such as the cerebellum, hippocampus, and frontal cortex. In this study, specific consideration is given to a role for the thalamus in autism. Whereas the thalamus has traditionally been referred to as the sensory gateway to the cortex, a current perspective of this structure suggests that it is involved in multiple processes …

Body Image Disturbance In Relation To Self-Perceptions Of Physical Attractiveness, Social Competence, And Need For Approval In College Women., Christine Louise. O'Connor Jan 2000

Body Image Disturbance In Relation To Self-Perceptions Of Physical Attractiveness, Social Competence, And Need For Approval In College Women., Christine Louise. O'Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the relationship between need for approval, social competence, and eating-related attitudes and behaviors. The relationship between physical attractiveness, social competence, and popularity was also explored. Fifty-five female undergraduate students, aged 18 to 25, completed the self-rated attractiveness and popularity measures twice, to determine their two week test-retest reliabilities. Both measures demonstrated adequate stability over time. In the second phase of the study, one hundred and seventy-four female undergraduate students of the same age completed the Eating Attitudes Test, the Marlowe-Crowne Scale, a self-rated physical attractiveness measure, a self-rated popularity measure, and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory. …

Gambling Behaviour And The Distribution Of Alcohol Consumption Model., Richard Joseph. Govoni Jan 2000

Gambling Behaviour And The Distribution Of Alcohol Consumption Model., Richard Joseph. Govoni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The parallels between gambling and other addictive behaviours, such as alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence, suggest that theoretical and empirical work derived from the study of alcohol consumption may be useful in understanding aspects of gambling behaviour. One approach to understanding drinking behaviour in a population is the distribution of consumption model first proposed by S. Ledermann in 1956 and significantly extended by O.-J. Skog. This "distribution of consumption model" suggests that alcohol consumption in a population will be highly skewed to the right, i.e., toward higher consumption levels, be characterized by the lognormal distribution, and that the shape of …

Does The Theory Of Planned Behaviour Predict Suicidal Intent?, Gail Anne. Matheson Jan 2000

Does The Theory Of Planned Behaviour Predict Suicidal Intent?, Gail Anne. Matheson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is generally recognized that a variety of factors contribute to suicide. No single determinant is either necessary or sufficient to bring about suicide. A theoretical framework within which to consider how suicide becomes an acceptable option for some people is needed. The Theory of Planned Behaviour was applied to suicidal behaviour, and it was hypothesized that the attitude one holds towards suicide, the subjective norms one experiences regarding suicide, and the sense of perceived behavioral control that one has with regard to suicide would predict suicidal intent. Participants completed a survey measuring these variables based on a vignette about …

Reliability And Concurrent Validity Of A French Version Of The Youth Self-Report For Francophone Youths., Christian Andre. Wyss Jan 2000

Reliability And Concurrent Validity Of A French Version Of The Youth Self-Report For Francophone Youths., Christian Andre. Wyss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the study was to establish basic psychometric information on the Youth Self-Report (YSR) and a French-Canadian version of the Youth Self-Report for a non-referred Canadian sample. A survey of psychologists and psychological associates in Ontario revealed that there were few psychological instruments available to psychologists serving the Francophone population, particularly for personality and emotional assessments (Wyss, 1997). Since bilinguals tend to disclose more when they use their first language (Canino & Spurlock, 1994), the lack of appropriate psychological instruments that can be administered in French may significantly impede evaluation of Francophones. The present study compared adolescent self-report …

An Examination Of Exercise Dependence And Its Relation To Eating Pathology., Dory. Becker Jan 2000

An Examination Of Exercise Dependence And Its Relation To Eating Pathology., Dory. Becker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exercise provides a number of health related benefits. However, it can be maladaptive when it becomes excessive and depended upon. The study of exercise dependence has been limited by the reliance on measures of frequency and duration, ignoring the importance of motives and withdrawal symptoms. Most research has assessed exercise dependence as a feature of eating disorders. Few have recognized that exercise dependence can be an autonomous disorder, take on many forms, and affect both men and women. The purpose of the present study was to examine exercise dependence and its relationship with eating pathology. Participants included 250 undergraduate females. …

Psychosocial Sequelae Of Pediatric Tbi: A Subtype Analysis Using The Child Behavior Checklist (Cbcl)., Susan Elizabeth. Hayman-Abello Jan 2000

Psychosocial Sequelae Of Pediatric Tbi: A Subtype Analysis Using The Child Behavior Checklist (Cbcl)., Susan Elizabeth. Hayman-Abello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to identify subtypes of psychosocial functioning in a sample of children who had sustained traumatic brain injury (TBI). Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) profiles were subjected to cluster analysis and then to Q-Factor analysis. The subjects consisted of 92 children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 who had been treated at either a community or an acute rehabilitation centre following a mild, moderate or severe TBI. Sixty-four of the subjects were classified into a four-category psychosocial typology using Q-Factor analysis. Based on the mean clinical scale elevations of the eight CBCL syndromes, the subtypes were labelled …

Predictors Of Quality Of Life And Adjustment To Chronic Fatigue Syndrome., Janette Marie. Collier Jan 2000

Predictors Of Quality Of Life And Adjustment To Chronic Fatigue Syndrome., Janette Marie. Collier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present research examined factors that contributed to the psychosocial adjustment and quality of life of individuals with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Variables studied included coping strategies, health locus of control, social support, quality of life, and psychosocial adjustment to illness. Forty CFS patients volunteered to participate in this study. Coping strategies were conceptualized in accordance with Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) stress and coping paradigm and were assessed using the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). Social support was conceptualized as a multidimensional construct involving social interaction, instrumental support, and positive and negative subjective support. Social support was …
