The Comparability Of The Wisc-R And Wisc-Iii In A Group Of Children With Learning Disabilities., Catherine B. Dool

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the test-retest comparability of the WISC-R and WISC-III in a group of children with learning disabilities. Children in the WISC-III group were tested with the WISC-III approximately 1 year following an initial evaluation with the WISC-R. Children in the WISC-R group were tested with the WISC-R twice over the same interval. The WISC-R group exhibited no significant change in IQ scores between trials. In contrast, the WISC-III group was found to have IQ scores on the WISC-III which were 7 to 9 points lower than their corresponding WISC-R scores. Correlations between …

The purpose of this study was to investigate, within the framework of psychoanalytic self psychology, the ability to regulate affect and self-esteem, and the level of object relations and self-object experiences, in a group of 30 bulimic women. The relationships between self-regulatory functions and relational experiences, and severity of bulimic symptoms were examined. Comparisons of self-regulatory functions and relational experiences were made between the bulimic group and three control groups composed of 30 depressed women, 30 overweight dieting women, and 30 normal controls who were not overweight, not dieting, not depressed, and not bulimic. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of hostility and direction of hostility, with particular emphasis on inwardly directed hostility in suicide attempt. The study proceeded by addressing the following issues: (a) relationship between inwardly directed hostility and suicide intent, (b) relationship between inwardly directed hostility, depression, and suicide intent, and (c) relationship between diagnosis, level of hostility and direction of hostility. The sample consisted of 100 participants who belonged to one of four groups: (a) inpatient suicide-attempters, (b) outpatient suicide-attempters, (c) inpatient depressives, and (d) non-clinical controls. A series of written, hypothetical case vignettes was created to investigate the effect of bias in decisions regarding a criminal defendants's fitness to stand trial. The design of this study involved a manipulation of variables corresponding to the legal standard of fitness to stand trial: the presence of a mental disorder which compromises the defendant's ability to understand the nature and importance of the proceedings and/or communicate with defence counsel. Within this framework, three legally irrelevant variables were also manipulated. Previous research has indicated that there may be an association between alcohol abuse and the occurrence of panic attacks for many individuals. The purpose of the present investigation was to gain a greater understanding of the role of anxiety in alcohol abuse. A comparative analysis of alcoholics who reported experiencing panic attacks versus non-panic alcoholics was conducted. Of primary interest in our investigation was the study of the attentional processes. Comparisons between groups of alcoholics were made on a modified Stroop word task which was designed to evaluate an individual's attention to selected stimulus words. Tension exists among members of various mental health professions, but factors that contribute to this tension are unclear. Levinger and Snoek's (1971) theory of interpersonal attraction and Deusch's (1981) theory of competition for limited resources provide a framework from which to discuss hypotheses and results. The purposes of the present study were to (1) assess amount and type of interdisciplinary contact available to mental health professionals-in-training, (2) assess interdisciplinary attitudes of professionals-in-training, and (3) determine factors contributing to favourable attitudes toward mental health professionals.
