Measuring Aggression And Conflict About Aggression., Christine A. Gudas Jan 1986

Measuring Aggression And Conflict About Aggression., Christine A. Gudas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health professionals need objective measures to assess their clients' disposition to aggress. Minuchin's (1950) measures of expressive aggression and defense against aggression on the TAT predicted neuropsychiatric inpatients' aggressive behavior. Recent work with the nonverbal, projective Picture-Preference Test (PPT; Auld & Kline, 1984; Kline, Auld, & Cooper, 1983) suggests that several of its scales--and the Eysencks' Psychoticism (P) scale--are also measures of a person's tendencies to aggress (Antisocial Tendencies, Maladjustment, Primary Process Thinking) or to inhibit aggression (Impulse Control). The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between the PPT scales, Eysencks' P scale, and Minuchin's …

Theoretical Orientations And Values Of Feminist Psychologists., Mary. Ricketts Jan 1986

Theoretical Orientations And Values Of Feminist Psychologists., Mary. Ricketts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the theoretical orientations and values of contemporary North American feminist psychologists. Surveys were distributed to all participants at the 1985 annual national conferences of the Association for Women in Psychology, and the Canadian Psychological Association's Section on Women and Psychology. On dichotomous measures of theoretical orientation in psychology (those that are based on the concept of opposing objectivist vs. subjectivist or scientist vs. humanist epistemologies), scores of respondents in the present study tended on the average to be in a markedly subjectivistic direction. As well as tending to favour subjectivistic rather …

Neuropsychological Characteristics Of Normal And Disabled Readers And Spellers: A Profile Analytic Approach., Diane Leslie. Russell Jan 1986

Neuropsychological Characteristics Of Normal And Disabled Readers And Spellers: A Profile Analytic Approach., Diane Leslie. Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study presents the results of a four-year follow-up study of the neuropsychological abilities of normal and disabled readers/spellers. The relationship between the neuropsychological profiles of these two groups and of a group of subjects from another data base was determined. The results of these analyses indicated that the neuropsychological profiles of disabled readers/spellers matched very highly with the profiles of other children who presented with such difficulties as academic problems, low academic achievement levels, speech and/or language problems, a lower Verbal IQ than Performance IQ on the WISC, and the left cerebral hemisphere implicated in their neuropsychological diagnosis. On …

Personality Characteristics Of Forensic Patients, Incarcerated Offenders, And Nonoffending Psychiatric Patients., Barbara J. Schmalz Jan 1986

Personality Characteristics Of Forensic Patients, Incarcerated Offenders, And Nonoffending Psychiatric Patients., Barbara J. Schmalz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to compare psychiatric, forensic, and inmate groups in an attempt to clarify the forensic distinction. The second purpose of this study was to examine the applicability of the Overcontrolled Hostility (O-H) scale of the MMPI and its corresponding typology (Megargee, 1967) to the forensic and inmate groups. This typology suggests that persons who commit severely assaultive crimes tend to overcontrol their hostility and score higher on the O-H scale than do persons who commit mildly/moderately assaultive crimes. Sixty subjects per group from an inpatient psychiatry unit, a medium secure forensic assessment unit, and …

Depression, Cognitive Distortion And Self-Efficacy In Chronic-Pain Patients., Ann M. Sprague Jan 1986

Depression, Cognitive Distortion And Self-Efficacy In Chronic-Pain Patients., Ann M. Sprague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive distortion, mood change, treatment expectancies and treatment choice in depressed and nondepressed chronic-pain outpatients, and to see whether a persuasive message could influence expectancies about treatment. Thirty patients referred for psychological assessment participated in the study. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Differential Personality Inventory (DPI), and the MMPI were used to assess depression. Mood change was measured by three administrations of the Profile of Mood States. Bandura's definitions of self-efficacy and outcome expectancy were used to design a measure of expectancies about pain-management treatment. All subjects were provided with assessment …

A Test Of Life Stress Theory And Role Stereotypes As Predictors Of Psychological Adjustment., Mary Anne. Johnston Jan 1986

A Test Of Life Stress Theory And Role Stereotypes As Predictors Of Psychological Adjustment., Mary Anne. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Life stress theory was examined from the perspective of its three components--life event characteristics, personal dispositions, and social supports. A literature review suggested that these components were important predictors of psychological adjustment. The purpose of the present study was to examine the stress-disorder relationship, with a secondary aim of exploring sex and age differences. It was expected that those who experienced more undesirable and uncontrollable events, who attributed internal, stable, and global causes to negative events, and who utilized fewer social supports, would show poor adjustment. In addition, due to sex-role stereotyping, females were expected to be less well-adjusted than …

Pathways To Care: Does Referral Type Provide Meaningful Data?, Ann L. Dyer Jan 1986

Pathways To Care: Does Referral Type Provide Meaningful Data?, Ann L. Dyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Self-referrals to a mental health facility were compared to a group of other-referrals on four measures: the Mental Health Locus of Origin Scale, the Mental Health Locus of Control Scale, the Personality Research Form, and the Help-Seeking Information Questionnaire. It was hypothesized that self-referrals would be more internal and independent than the other-referrals. Confirmation of this hypothesis was obtained. Self-referrals differed significantly from other-referrals in their beliefs about the etiology of mental health problems as measured by the Mental Health Locus of Origin Scale. Other-referrals revealed an external orientation by attributing emotional distress to endogenous factors. Self-referrals demonstrated more of …

Assessment Of A Therapist's Strategic Processing Of Psychotherapy: A Multivariate Single Case Procedure For Supervision., Marcia Nadine. Gragg Jan 1986

Assessment Of A Therapist's Strategic Processing Of Psychotherapy: A Multivariate Single Case Procedure For Supervision., Marcia Nadine. Gragg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A review of the literature examined the prevailing approach to supervision research and provided a conceptual framework for an alternative approach. The present study used a hypothesis generating approach with a single case design and an emphasis on process rather than outcome. The patterns of change in the student therapists' perceptions of psychotherapy and supervision were systematically evaluated and described. The subjects were six clinical psychology graduate students with some prior psychotherapy experience. There were three females and three males ranging in age from mid-twenties to early thirties. The research was conducted in conjunction with a course on systemic approaches …

An Archival Investigation Of The Relationship Of Severity Of Problems And Amount Of Exposure Practice, To Positive Changes And Outcome Status Among Agoraphobic Participants In A Behavioural Treatment Program., Carol. Franklyn-Phills Jan 1986

An Archival Investigation Of The Relationship Of Severity Of Problems And Amount Of Exposure Practice, To Positive Changes And Outcome Status Among Agoraphobic Participants In A Behavioural Treatment Program., Carol. Franklyn-Phills

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present archival study focused upon the relationship between amount of exposure practice, severity of problems, outcome status and positive change in a behavioural treatment program for agoraphobia. This program primarily involved in-vivo exposure (systematic desensitization) to feared situations. Subjects recorded the duration and frequency of their exposure practice on behavioural diaries. These diaries, along with other self-report data, were treated as an archival source which was subjected to the scrutiny of "control" hypotheses as suggested by Kerlinger (1964). Since the program to be utilized here was behavioural in its approach, these hypotheses were deduced from findings of the behavioural …

Helplessness, Sex Roles, And Depression., Ralph. Billingsley Jan 1986

Helplessness, Sex Roles, And Depression., Ralph. Billingsley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Epidemiological studies have shown depression to be more prevalent among women than among men. In attempting to explain this fact, the author made use of E. Bibring's (1953) theory of depression. Bibring proposed that a fixation to a feeling of helplessness is predisposing to depression. The present author conjectured that women, more than men, have developed such fixations. Birbring postulated three kinds of helplessness fixation. The present author used the Succorance scale of Jackson's Personality Research Form (PRF-S) to measure the dependency that is characteristic of an oral-level helplessness fixation. He used the Hostile-Guilt scale of the Mosher Incomplete Sentences …
