Additive Manufacturing With High Density Polyethylene: Mechanical Properties Evaluation, Calvin Wampol Jan 2018

Additive Manufacturing With High Density Polyethylene: Mechanical Properties Evaluation, Calvin Wampol

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High-density polyethylene is a common recyclable plastic that has a large potential as an additive manufacturing material due its economic and environmental benefits. However, high-density polyethylene has undesirable thermal properties that cause the material to shirk and not adhere to the printing bed during an additive manufacturing processes. Researchers have attempted to combat these thermal properties but have only created novel filaments of high-density polyethylene without being able to create 3D printed specimens for mechanical property testing. This paper presents several methods to create 3D printed specimens with pure high-density polyethylene filament on a fused filament fabrication type 3D printer. …

A Development Of Travel Time Equation For Overland Flow As Affected By Vegetation, Naga Vara Prasad Ganti Jan 2018

A Development Of Travel Time Equation For Overland Flow As Affected By Vegetation, Naga Vara Prasad Ganti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In overland flow water research, travel time is a significant parameter used in estimating peak discharge in channels or rivers. Overland flow is assumed to be in turbulent condition to estimate travel time using Manning’s Velocity Equation (MVE). When the flow is in a laminar condition, Grismer’s Laminar Mean Velocity Equation (GLMVE) is applied but fails to consider the roughness parameter. A review of the literature shows numerous equations for overland travel time, but there is no known equation that determines the mean velocity of overland flow under laminar condition with a roughness coefficient or other coefficient related to the …

Mechanical Bar Splices For Accelerated Construction Of Bridge Columns, Puskar Kumar Dahal Jan 2018

Mechanical Bar Splices For Accelerated Construction Of Bridge Columns, Puskar Kumar Dahal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical bar splicing is an alternative method of connecting reinforcing bars in concrete structures compared to conventional lap splicing mainly to reduce bar congestion in joints. Recently, mechanical bar splices, which are also referred to as bar couplers, have been used to connect precast members to accelerate construction of concrete bridges and buildings. Current codes prohibit the use of couplers in the plastic hinge regions of bridge columns in high seismic zones. This may be because of a lack of systematic test data on the coupler performance, limited experimental studies on mechanically spliced bridge columns, and an engineering precaution. The …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Tack Coat Type, Application Rate, And Surface Type On Interlayer Shear Strength, Chamika Prashan Dharmarathna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tack coat is an asphaltic material applied between asphalt pavement layers. Since pavement is a multilayered structure, it is highly important to make proper bond between the layers to achieve a monolithic behavior. Hence, inadequate bond due to application of inadequate amount of tack coat may lead to poor structural behavior and premature failure. Also, applying excessive amount of tack coat may lead to layer slippage and binder migration. Therefore, it is highly important to apply an optimum amount of tack coat between layers. Over the past decades several studies have been conducted to determine the optimum tack coat application …

Volumetric Three-Component Velocimetry Two-Phase Flow Measurements Of Sediment Suspension Under Regular Plunging Waves, Deryn Ann Beck Jan 2018

Volumetric Three-Component Velocimetry Two-Phase Flow Measurements Of Sediment Suspension Under Regular Plunging Waves, Deryn Ann Beck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breaking waves suspend and transport large amounts of sediment particles in the surf zone. Two important aspects of the problem are the mechanism of sediment suspension and the distribution of the suspended sediment. One approach to solving this problem is to measure the sediment particles’ position and movement simultaneously with the characteristics of the flow field. Previous studies have found that sediment suspension events are related to a number of flow parameters including the vertical velocity, vorticity, horizontal velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, total shear stress, and turbulent shear stress. The objective of this study was to design and conduct an …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Internal And External Nutrient Removal To Control Algal Bloom In Eutrophic Lakes, Sepideh Sadeghi Jan 2018

Laboratory Evaluation Of Internal And External Nutrient Removal To Control Algal Bloom In Eutrophic Lakes, Sepideh Sadeghi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eutrophication is one of the most widespread water quality problems in lakes and reservoirs. Frequent cyanobacterial blooms resulting from eutrophication can greatly damage aquatic ecosystems and pose a high risk to human health. Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) are the major causes for eutrophic conditions and can enter to the aquatic ecosystem via different sources. The combination of phosphorus precipitation and sediment capping are promising technologies to minimize internal P loading and control harmful algal blooms in eutrophic lakes. Denitrification bioreactors have emerged as an important edge-of-field treatment technology to reduce nitrate-nitrogen loads from external sources. The objective of this …
