Fathers' Physical Play With Their Children With Autism: Benefits For Fathers, Jason Bloom Oct 2015

Fathers' Physical Play With Their Children With Autism: Benefits For Fathers, Jason Bloom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated fathers’ physical play with their children with Autism (ASD), and the benefits of this play for fathers. Benefits included improvements in parenting stress, impact on parenting, and life satisfaction, which are challenges that fathers of children with ASD experience. Fathers of sons with ASD aged 4-11 (N = 60) completed an online survey, and 20 completed an additional phone interview. Multiple regression analyses revealed that more frequent physical play behaviours (i.e., tickling, piggyback riding) were associated with lower parenting stress scores for fathers. Analyses also revealed that higher satisfaction with play and relationship-quality were associated with …

Examining The Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers Toward Including Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In A General Education Setting, Luanne Beth Sailors Jul 2015

Examining The Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers Toward Including Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders In A General Education Setting, Luanne Beth Sailors

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Including students with a range of abilities in today's classrooms paired with increasing inclusive practices has presented itself as a challenge for all educators. More specifically, students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have had an increased presence in general education settings. This study aimed to discover pre-service teachers' perceptions toward including students with ASD in a general education setting, examine pre-service teacher knowledge regarding ASD, and examine if any correlation between the two may exist. The main research instrument consisted of a set of 1) demographic questions (categorical data), 2) perceptions of inclusion of students with ASD measured in a …

Screening For Autism Spectrum Disorders In African American Toddlers: Utilizing The Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment And Maternal Factors To Improve Classification Accuracy, Rachel Louise Peterman Feb 2015

Screening For Autism Spectrum Disorders In African American Toddlers: Utilizing The Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment And Maternal Factors To Improve Classification Accuracy, Rachel Louise Peterman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Improved diagnostic accuracy and intervention services for toddlers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) necessitates early identification of children at risk for the disorder. African American and low-income children are at increased risk for delayed diagnosis; however, universal screening may identify those at risk. This study examined the utility of the Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA) as an ASD screener in an exclusively African American sample. Moreover, contribution of maternal factors to predict ASD was explored. Participants were selected from the CANDLE (Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood) study, which is an ongoing study in an …

Exploring Autism Prediction Through Logistic Regression Analysis With Corrections For Rare Events Data, Jennifer Hunter Jan 2015

Exploring Autism Prediction Through Logistic Regression Analysis With Corrections For Rare Events Data, Jennifer Hunter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of rare events data in which observations of non-event outcomes far outnumber event outcomes makes inference under these circumstances quite difficult. Ideally, for a binary dependent variable, one would like sample data to contain enough observations from both outcome categories. With rare events data, however, this is usually impossible and/or costly to achieve with random sampling. This exploratory research aims to find a set of potential predictors that could be used to quantify a person's risk for developing autism spectrum disorder. A more efficient data collection strategy will be employed that allows for a smaller sample size of …

Facilitating Healthy Interpersonal Relationships For Adolescents With Autism: An Examination Of Knowledge Acquisition And Retention Over Time, Elizabeth Pask Jan 2015

Facilitating Healthy Interpersonal Relationships For Adolescents With Autism: An Examination Of Knowledge Acquisition And Retention Over Time, Elizabeth Pask

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the Healthy Relationships & Autism (HR) curriculum (Sutton & Wesley Spectrum Services, 2013), which is a developmentally sequenced, manualized treatment intended for children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The HR curriculum is designed to facilitate healthy interpersonal relationships in children and adolescents with ASD. Specifically, this study investigates the effectiveness of Module 2 of the curriculum, which focuses on teaching basic biological sex education, using well researched techniques designed to reach individuals with ASD. The paper elaborates on the history and development of the need to address these issues, …

Novel Solid-Phase Extraction Techniques For Biological And Environmental Analysis Using Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, Andrew Boggess Jan 2015

Novel Solid-Phase Extraction Techniques For Biological And Environmental Analysis Using Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, Andrew Boggess

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Awareness and study of the ways in which the environment can interact with the personal genetics and epigenetics of an individual has grown substantially in recent years, resulting in the field of Exposomics. In an era of increasingly personalized medicine, novel techniques are necessary to ensure the accurate and sensitivity measurement of clinically and environmentally relevant molecules in biological and environmental samples. Addressing existing shortcomings cited in literature, methods were developed and optimized for the extraction, separation, mass analysis, and quantification of a suite of environmental organic pollutants in both biological and environmental samples, with the primary objective of improving …

Quality Of Life And Healthcare Utilization And Costs Among Adults With Autism, Krutika Maulik Jariwala-Parikh Jan 2015

Quality Of Life And Healthcare Utilization And Costs Among Adults With Autism, Krutika Maulik Jariwala-Parikh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are to: 1) assess construct validity of the World Health Organization’s Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) instrument, 2) evaluate quality of life (QOL) among adults with autism and 3) assess the prevalence, healthcare utilization and costs, and medication use among adults with autism enrolled in the Medicaid program. METHODS The study methodology included both primary and secondary data collection techniques. For objectives one and two, a cross-sectional, descriptive quantitative design was utilized. An internet-based survey using Qualtrics was administered to adults with autism enrolled with the Interactive Autism Network (IAN). The WHOQOL-BREF instrument was validated …
