Impact Of Blended Salt Anti-Icers/Deicers On Properties Of Asphalt Binders, Nurudeen A. Abidoye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anyone who has ever attempted to remove a layer of ice from a roadway or sidewalk by plowing or shoveling knows it is no easy task when the ice is firmly bonded to the asphalt/concrete surface. Winter anti-icing/deicing operations are moral choices that mankind has made to combat winter storms. This research is aimed at evaluating the macro and nano structural impacts of (anti-icing/de-icing) salt on aged and unaged asphalt binders. The macro structural impacts focused on the rheological and creep properties, and the nano structural impacts focused on the surface topography, adhesion force, and modulus of asphalt binders. Rheological …

In the last two decades, trains have been developed either to carry heavy weight of cargo or for high-speed rail transport. Nonetheless, track structure, have not been improved adequate to support the extra loads or dynamic vibrations of high-speed trains. As a result, the performance of track will be affected from heavy freight or high-speed trains. In the long term it results in trackbed damage by increasing the subgrade and ballast displacement. Besides, it negatively affects the performance of the locomotives. Therefore, alternative subballast, should be introduced to reduce the stress and deformation of the track under dynamic or heavy …

Evaluation Of The Moisture-Induced Damage Potential Of Asphalt Mixes And Asphalt Binder-Aggregate Systems, Rajan Acharya Jan 2018

Evaluation Of The Moisture-Induced Damage Potential Of Asphalt Mixes And Asphalt Binder-Aggregate Systems, Rajan Acharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current thesis presents the findings of a study conducted on asphalt mixes to evaluate their moisture-induced damage potential through testing of the plant produced asphalt mixes in South Dakota using local aggregates and commonly used asphalt binders. The moisture-induced damage potentials of the asphalt mixes were evaluated by conducting tensile strength ratio (TSR) and modified Semicircular Bend (SCB) tests. The effect of moisture on asphalt binder-aggregate adhesion was evaluated by conducting binder bond strength (BBS) test on binder-aggregate systems. The asphalt mixes tested in this study included a hot mix asphalt (HMA) containing hydrated lime (1% by the weight …
