The Lotka Hypothesis And Bibliometric Methodology, Paul Travis Nicholls Jan 1987

The Lotka Hypothesis And Bibliometric Methodology, Paul Travis Nicholls

Digitized Theses

This study is an empirical examination of Lotka's law and the bibliometric methodology associated with it. A number of previous investigators have contributed to the empirical validation and generalization of Lotka's hypothesis; however, these studies are largely incomparable and inconclusive, owing to substantial differences in sampling, measurement, parameter estimation, testing, and even basic interpretation of the model. These data are subjected to a consistent secondary analysis here; newly collected data are also analysed, to expand the database of previous results. There are two main objectives in this study: First, to thoroughly and critically review the literature bearing on the statistical …

Molecular And Genetic Analysis Of The Phi X174 A* Gene And The Escherichia Coli Rep Gene, Joseph James Colasanti Jan 1987

Molecular And Genetic Analysis Of The Phi X174 A* Gene And The Escherichia Coli Rep Gene, Joseph James Colasanti

Digitized Theses

This work involves the molecular cloning the {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} gene of {dollar}\Phi{lcub}\rm X174{rcub}{dollar} and the rep gene of E. coli into plasmid vehicles that allow their expression to be regulated. These special plasmids contain controlling elements of phage {dollar}\lambda{dollar} that enable expression of cloned genes to be switched "on" by altering the temperature at which they are propagated.;The presence of the {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} gene product is extremely toxic to E. coli. Therefore, to isolate and stably maintain a recombinant plasmid carrying this gene, its expression must be repressed. The use of an inducible expression vector allowed gene {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} to …

Dynamic Analysis Of Offshore Structures, Hisham Mohammed Mitwally Jan 1987

Dynamic Analysis Of Offshore Structures, Hisham Mohammed Mitwally

Digitized Theses

This study comprises three main parts: (1) Pile Driving Analysis. The conventional one dimensional wave equation analysis of the pile driving problem suffers from the empirical representation of the soil parameters. In this study, an improved one dimensional wave equation model is developed which accounts for wave propagation in the soil mass and thus gives more realistic prediction of the pile displacements. A three dimensional finite element analysis of the problem is also formulated and its results are compared with those of the one dimensional analysis. The finite element analysis is computationally very expensive which is not justified due to …

Progesterone And Estrogens In Intrauterine Tissues During Pregnancy And Labour, Stephen George Power Jan 1987

Progesterone And Estrogens In Intrauterine Tissues During Pregnancy And Labour, Stephen George Power

Digitized Theses

A decline in progesterone and a rise in estrogen levels in the maternal and fetal plasmas occur prior to parturition. I examined the hypothesis that similar changes in the ovine intrauterine tissues are associated with labour. I also determined whether the intrauterine tissues could produce progesterone and estrogens and whether these activities change in association with labour.;Samples of maternal and fetal bloods, fetal fluids, myometrium, endometrium, chorion, amnion and allantois were obtained from pregnant sheep of different gestational ages and in labour occurring either at term or induced prematurely by administration of ACTH to the fetus. Steroids were measured using …

The Poetry Of A M Klein, Noreen Golfman Jan 1987

The Poetry Of A M Klein, Noreen Golfman

Digitized Theses

This thesis is devoted to a full explication of the poetry of A. M. Klein. Klein's unpublished and uncollected work, almost all of it located in the Public Archives of Canada, as well as his published poetry volumes (Hath Not a Jew..., Poems (1944), The Hitleriad, The Rocking Chair and Other Poems), are discussed in detail. The thesis begins with Klein's earliest unpublished efforts in the mid to late 'twenties and advances chronologically through to 1948 and the Governor General Award-winning Rocking Chair volume.;It is the author's thesis that Klein's poetry consistently and masterfully represents the central conflict of modernism: …

Inflation And Costly Price Adjustment, Jerzy Dariusz Konieczny Jan 1987

Inflation And Costly Price Adjustment, Jerzy Dariusz Konieczny

Digitized Theses

The welfare costs of anticipated inflation are analyzed on the basis of the roles money plays in the economy. The traditional account of Bailey (1956) and Friedman (1969) are incomplete. When money is a store of value inflation distorts the optimal portfolio composition and the intertemporal allocation of consumption. When money is a medium of exchange, inflation is a tax on market activities. It reduces the trading efficiency of the economy and so shrinks agents' opportunity sets. When money is used as a unit of account, accounting costs rise. The frequency of price changes may, but need not, increase. The …

Trade And Intermediation Services, Cillian Ryan Jan 1987

Trade And Intermediation Services, Cillian Ryan

Digitized Theses

This thesis focuses on the problem of dimensionality in trade. It interprets the service sector as a group of agents who emerge endogenously in order to assist other agents in surmounting barriers of space, time, or information.;I develop the thesis in two stages, the first using a fixed-factor model of trade and the second using a mobile-factor version. The new results that arise in this thesis are due to two features of the model. In the fixed-factor model servicers' offer curves are linear due to the fact that they arise from technological restrictions rather than the usual utility maximizing process …

The Effect Of Chilling Temperatures On Aspects Of Porphyrin Metabolism In Leaves Of Seedlings Of Maize (Zea Mays L), Robert Russell Hodgins Jan 1987

The Effect Of Chilling Temperatures On Aspects Of Porphyrin Metabolism In Leaves Of Seedlings Of Maize (Zea Mays L), Robert Russell Hodgins

Digitized Theses

The effect of chilling temperatures on porphyrin biosynthesis was studied in maize (Zea mays, L.). The results were consistent with the hypothesis that there are at least 3 temperature sensitive sites that compromise the accumulation of chlorophyll. Week old 28{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C light grown seedlings synthesized negligible amounts of chlorophyll when exposed to 12{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C for a subsequent 6 d. The effects were reversible in that plants returned to 28{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C had the chlorophyll content restored to control levels. The results were not consistent with a low temperature mediated decrease of carotenoid content, depletion of chlorophyll per chloroplast, accelerated senescence, or a dessication mediated …

Synthesis And Mechanism In Organic Sulfonyl Chemistry, Kishan Chand Khemani Jan 1987

Synthesis And Mechanism In Organic Sulfonyl Chemistry, Kishan Chand Khemani

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes four topics in synthesis and mechanism of reactions of certain organo-sulfonyl compounds. The first describes the reaction of thiirane-1,1-dioxide with hydroxide ion. Notwithstanding an earlier report, it was found that the major product of this reaction was ethanesulfonate anion, substituted analogues of which have occasionally been observed as products of certain Ramberg-Backlund reactions. It is proposed that the reaction proceeds via a penta-coordinated sulfur intermediate formed by the attack of hydroxide ion at the sulfonyl function of thiirane-1,1-dioxide.;In the second study, use of {dollar}\sp{lcub}18{rcub}{dollar}O labels and kinetics led to the conclusion that hydrolysis of 2-hydroxyethanesulfonyl chloride to …

Managers, Learning And The Multinational Firm: Theory And Evidence, Bernard Camille Beaudreau Jan 1987

Managers, Learning And The Multinational Firm: Theory And Evidence, Bernard Camille Beaudreau

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the question of managerial/organizational advantages as a cause of foreign direct investment (FDI) and thus as the basis of multinational enterprises (MNE's). Three approaches to this question are taken: historical, analytical, and empirical. Historically, managerial/organizational advantages as a cause of MNE's is traced back to the early work of Southard and Phelps in the 1930's. Analytically, three models of embodied-in-managers, intangible assets are advanced, of which two are non-strategic. In the strategic model, foreign direct investment is shown to be a dominant strategy when entry by former managers (defectors) is threatened. These models make use of Penrose's …

Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner Jan 1987

Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner

Digitized Theses

The goal of this study was to investigate relationships among teacher flexibility, classroom teaching behaviour, and perceived teacher effectiveness in a sample of 95 secondary school teachers. Teacher flexibility was defined as a global, multifaceted characteristic consisting of both a cognitive and personality component. Three paper-and-pencil measures of each component of flexibility were employed. Frequency of occurrence of specific teaching behaviours and overall teaching effectiveness were rated by students in classes taught by participating teachers, using a 40-item teaching evaluation form.;The results provided very little support for an underlying unidimensional teacher flexibility construct in either the cognitive or personality domain. …

A Kinematic And Electromyographic Study Of The Mechanisms Contributing To Cerebellar Intention Tremor And Dysmetria, Didier A. Flament Jan 1987

A Kinematic And Electromyographic Study Of The Mechanisms Contributing To Cerebellar Intention Tremor And Dysmetria, Didier A. Flament

Digitized Theses

The kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) characteristics of cerebellar tremor and dysmetria were investigated in six Cebus monkeys. Cerebellar dysfunction was produced by reversible cooling lesions of the dentate and interposed nuclei. The aims of the study were (1) to compare the characteristics of the cerebellar intention tremor that occurs after the end of a voluntary movement (static or terminal tremor) with the tremor that occurs after the limb has been perturbed, (2) to determine the role played by stretch-evoked activity in generating this tremor, (3) to investigate the nature of the tremor that occurs during a voluntary movement (kinetic tremor) …

A Major Cell Envelope Protein Of Escherichia Coli K12: Purification And Properties, Douglas Arthur Kuntz Jan 1987

A Major Cell Envelope Protein Of Escherichia Coli K12: Purification And Properties, Douglas Arthur Kuntz

Digitized Theses

The isolation and characterization of a major cell envelope protein from E. coli K12, the so-called "succinate eluted protein" (SEP) is reported. SEP was released by EDTA-sucrose and osmotic shock treatments, or during the formation of spheroplasts. The protein was purified on columns of aspartate-Sepharose (A-S) an affinity matrix previously used for the isolation of dicarboxylate transport components. SEP was the major protein eluted when the A-S columns were equilibrated in low ionic strength buffer (10 mM phosphate containing 5 mM EDTA). SEP was purified to apparent homogeneity as judged by SDS-PAGE, IEF and HPLC/gel filtration. SEP stimulated succinate transport …

Les Debuts De La Carriere Theatrale De Michel Garneau: La Mise En Oeuvre De Ses Ecrits Theoriques, Michael John Klementowicz Jan 1987

Les Debuts De La Carriere Theatrale De Michel Garneau: La Mise En Oeuvre De Ses Ecrits Theoriques, Michael John Klementowicz

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines the application of Michel Garneau's theoretical writings to his early dramatic works. Michel Garneau has become one of Quebec's foremost literary figures over the last twenty years. We demonstrate how Garneau is trying to establish the role that writing, and in particular theatre, can, and according to him, should play in society. This approach to theory, an applied approach, is contained in his creative works. His theatrical techniques are unique, closely related to his beginnings as a poet.;Through a critical analysis of his theoretical writings in the last two volumes of the collection of poetry entitled Langage …

The Impact Of Computer-Mediated Communication Systems On Interpersonal Relations And Task Performance, Jimming Tzu-Ming Lin Jan 1987

The Impact Of Computer-Mediated Communication Systems On Interpersonal Relations And Task Performance, Jimming Tzu-Ming Lin

Digitized Theses

Computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS) have numerous implications for business policy, MIS management and many other areas. This study is based on a research framework derived from social exchange theory, interpersonal relations, bilateral bargaining, communication modality, and other areas. The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of CMCS, as compared to face-to-face (FTF) communications, on two facets on interpersonal interactions: interpersonal relations and task performance.;This study employed an experimental method. The independent variables were media, namely, computer-mediated communication systems CMCS vs. FTF; and familiarity, e.g., familiar (FAM) vs. unfamiliar (UFA). Four groups, labelled CMCS-FAM, FTF-FAM, CMCS-UFA, and …

Some Physiological Aspects Of The Soybean - Phytophthora Megasperma F Sp Glycinea Interaction, With Special Reference To The Phytoalexin, Glyceollin, Madan Kumar Bhattacharyya Jan 1987

Some Physiological Aspects Of The Soybean - Phytophthora Megasperma F Sp Glycinea Interaction, With Special Reference To The Phytoalexin, Glyceollin, Madan Kumar Bhattacharyya

Digitized Theses

The interaction of soybean cultivars (Glycine max) with Phytophthora megasperma f.sp. glycinea (Pmg) races is governed by single host genes (Rps) and is consistent with the "gene-for-gene" hypothesis. Using the near isogenic cultivars Harosoy ({dollar}rps\sb1{dollar}, susceptible to race 1) and Harosoy 63 ({dollar}Rps\sb1{dollar}, resistant) and Pmg race 1 it was demonstrated that the {dollar}Rps\sb1{dollar} gene is expressed in hypocotyls and roots of light and dark grown seedlings, in green cotyledons and leaves but not in immature leaves. Leaves of cv. Harosoy became resistant with age. The phytoalexins, glyceollin isomers I, II and III, accumulated rapidly in resistant responses. Proportions of …

The Intrinsic Resistance Of V79 Multicell Spheroids To Mitoxantrone, Adriamycin And Menogaril, Tewfik Jermyn Bichay Jan 1987

The Intrinsic Resistance Of V79 Multicell Spheroids To Mitoxantrone, Adriamycin And Menogaril, Tewfik Jermyn Bichay

Digitized Theses

Cancer chemotherapy usually fails to completely cure solid tumors due to surviving cells often repopulating the tumor or metastasizing to other sites. It is not clear whether tumor cells are apparently resistant due to a restricted drug penetration into the tumor mass, or whether the resistance is intrinsic being due to the tumor microenvironment.;We have used an in vitro model of tumor nodules, the multicell spheroid, to determine the apparent and intrinsic resistances of cells growing in contact in a tumor-like environment to two anthracyclines: adriamycin, and menogaril, and the anthracenedione mitoxantrone. A combination of HPLC, radiolabel, and flow cytometric …

Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy And Events In The Asbestos-Valcourt Region, Southeastern Quebec, Michel Parent Jan 1987

Late Pleistocene Stratigraphy And Events In The Asbestos-Valcourt Region, Southeastern Quebec, Michel Parent

Digitized Theses

The stratigraphic record of the Asbestos-Valcourt region indicates that glacial sediment deposite during at least two regional glacial advances underlie Late Wisconsinan ice-contact and glaciolacustrine sediments. Glaciolacustrine sediments (unit B), which underlie surface till (drift unit C), were deposited during a rather short-lived interstade, prior to the Late Wisconsinan glacial maximum; unit B is a probable correlative of the Gayhurst Formation (Middle Wisconsinan).;Till deposited in the Appalachian Uplands during the earlier glacial advance (drift unit A) contains only rare Shield-type erratics and has a distinctive Appalachian provenance. Till geochemistry as well as till clast lithology and fabrics indicate that drift …

Maternal Adaptation To A Hearing-Impaired Child: A Comparison Of The Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Social Support And Personality, Alexandra Louise Quittner Jan 1987

Maternal Adaptation To A Hearing-Impaired Child: A Comparison Of The Mediating And Moderating Effects Of Social Support And Personality, Alexandra Louise Quittner

Digitized Theses

The current study assessed the relationships among parenting stress, social support, marital satisfaction and psychological adjustment in a sample of 96 mothers of hearing impaired preschoolers and 118 matched mothers of nondisabled children. Two competing models of the effects of social support and specific personality variables on adjustment were tested: the "buffer" and mediator models. Respondents completed a structured interview and a series of standardized questionnaires. Factor analyses of the independent variables yielded two dimensions of parenting stress and three dimensions of social support.;Significant group differences were obtained on the measures of parenting stress, marital satisfaction and psychological adjustment. Moderating …

Low Light Level Television Meteor Observations And Simulations, Teddy Sarma Jan 1987

Low Light Level Television Meteor Observations And Simulations, Teddy Sarma

Digitized Theses

A new sample of low light level television observations was combined with meteor model simulations to deduce meteoroid structure. The observations constitute the largest sample of faint meteor trajectories currently available. Simulations of compact stone and dustball meteor models were conducted. The large diversity of observed trajectories were not reproduced by the models presented in this thesis.;The 1981 and 1982 double station low light level television observations produced 459 meteor trajectories in the mass range 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} to 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}-4{rcub}{dollar} grams. These trajectories exhibited large variations in beginning heights, vertical trail lengths and light curves. The variations were attributed to differing meteoroid …

A Photoelectron Study Of The Bonding Ability Of Phosphine And Isocyanide Ligands In Organometallic Complexes, Lisa Marie Dignard Jan 1987

A Photoelectron Study Of The Bonding Ability Of Phosphine And Isocyanide Ligands In Organometallic Complexes, Lisa Marie Dignard

Digitized Theses

High resolution ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of substituted tungsten carbonyl derivatives have been measured. The study of the photoelectron peaks due to the tungsten 5d orbitals in the series of complexes (W(CO){dollar}{lcub}\rm\sb{lcub}n{rcub}L\sb{lcub}6-n{rcub}{rcub}{dollar}) has demonstrated that the Ligand Additivity Model holds for the systems where L are tertiary phosphine ligands. This work confirms that the splitting of the tungsten 5d orbitals observed in the photoelectron spectra can be described in terms of ligand field effects and are not dominated by relaxation effects.;The substituent effects of methyl and phenyl groups in isocyanide and tertiary phosphine ligands have been studied by photoelectron, infrared and …

Perceptions Of Children's Moral Reasoning, Susan Louise Bryant Jan 1987

Perceptions Of Children's Moral Reasoning, Susan Louise Bryant

Digitized Theses

Moral judgment has been a popular area of interest over the past few decades as researchers have begun to consider adults' perceptions of the moral reasoning abilities of others. The present thesis provided an extension to this previous research and considered adults' awareness of young children's moral judgment skills.;The first study examined adults' predictions of moral reasoning for different-aged children. Adults' prescriptions for advice they would offer to teach moral reasoning were also assessed at three age levels. Comparisons revealed that the adults were able to predict the moral performance of the children. Their prescriptions, however, did not reflect an …

Life History Strategies Of A North Temperate Salmonid, Salvelinus Fontinalis, In Polar Bear Provincial Park, Ontario, Peter Owen Steele Jan 1987

Life History Strategies Of A North Temperate Salmonid, Salvelinus Fontinalis, In Polar Bear Provincial Park, Ontario, Peter Owen Steele

Digitized Theses

A northern anadromous population of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), from the Sutton river, in the Ontario Hudson Bay Lowlands, was examined to determine if its life history differed from that reported for the species elsewhere. The Sutton River population was similar to historical anadromous populations native to North America 200 years ago. Only minor differences were discernible between the life histories of brook trout from Sutton River, Ontario, Nelson-Hayes River, Manitoba, and Richmond Gulf, Quebec. All of these populations differed from populations in Canadian Maritime Provinces, in that the northern trout migrated to saline water earlier, matured later and at …

The Cholinergic Septohippocampal Projection And Hippocampal Activity In Waking Behavior, Sleep And Anesthesia, Dwight James Stewart

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effects of lesions of the septohippocampal system on hippocampal rhythmical slow activity (RSA) and large amplitude irregular activity (LIA). Slow wave activity was recorded from rat hippocampus during waking behaviors and following the administration of atropine or urethane after either an intraseptal injection of ibotenic acid, an intracerebroventricular injection of ethylcholine aziridinium ion (AF64A) or control solutions. Hippocampal activity was also investigated during quiet and active sleep following ibotenic acid or control treatment.;Ibotenic acid selectively abolished the atropine-sensitive form of RSA normally seen during tonic periods of active sleep and during …

Sectoral Shifts, Costly Mobility And Aggregate Unemployment: Evidence From Seven Industrialized Countries, Lucie Samson Jan 1987

Sectoral Shifts, Costly Mobility And Aggregate Unemployment: Evidence From Seven Industrialized Countries, Lucie Samson

Digitized Theses

Determining what percentage of a country's unemployment rate is "natural", as opposed to cyclical, has been a preoccupation of macroeconomists for a very long time and is still a subject of debate today. This thesis studies this issue in the light of a more recent and comprehensive approach. A theoretical model is presented in the second chapter that puts the emphasis on the presence of transaction costs in the labour and the goods markets, and of technological shocks hitting firms differently depending on the good they produce. Given the assumption of costly mobility of labour across sectors of production, it …

Banded Chlorite-Sericite-Garnet Schist (BCSGS) is in sharp upper contact to Graphitic …

An Empirical Study Of The Ability Of Canadian Oil And Gas Companies' Reserves Disclosures To Account For Relative Changes In Common Stock Prices, Howard Douglas Teall Jan 1987

An Empirical Study Of The Ability Of Canadian Oil And Gas Companies' Reserves Disclosures To Account For Relative Changes In Common Stock Prices, Howard Douglas Teall

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine which of these alternative annual report disclosures of oil and gas reserves, namely historic capitalized costs, quantities and discounted cash flows, contributes the most information content. Information content is defined as the ability of a reserves disclosure to account for relative changes in common stock prices.;It has been proposed by the "events" approach to accounting theory that a role of the annual financial report is to report on the economic events of the accounting period that influenced the expected stream of future cash flows of a corporation. As a corporation's common stock …

Some Studies Of Interactions At Biological Surfaces, Donald John Mciver Jan 1987

Some Studies Of Interactions At Biological Surfaces, Donald John Mciver

Digitized Theses

Interactions between biological surfaces are central events in a wide variety of biological processes, including ligand-receptor binding, adsorption of molecules from suspension onto interfaces, and adhesive interactions between whole cells or subcellular particles. Despite the chemical diversity of these reactions--for example, the wide range of ligand structures and binding behaviour--it is believed that the underlying physicochemical forces do not differ between all of these surface phenomena.;In this study, an approach based on classical equilibrium capillarity has been adapted to estimate the magnitude of the macroscopically observable resultant of these surface forces (the surface affinity or work of adhesion) between several …
