This condition is the result of persistent pathogenic microorganisms such as Enterococcus faecalis (E. f) and Candida albicans (C. a) remaining in the root canal systems of teeth, and the ability of those organisms to directly cause acute and chronic inflammation in the periapical tissues. It is caused by a transversely deficient maxilla, relative to the mandible, and results when the mandible shifts to one side to so the teeth can maximally interdigitate. An important goal of root canal therapy is elimination of microorganisms which are usually organized into a biofilm phenotype. Irrigants play an indispensable role in areas inaccessible to mechanical instrumentation. In this study, a novel endodontic irrigant was formulated composed of a penetrating solvent, 70% Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with a 1:1 molar ratio of an antibiotic (Clindamycin HCl) and antifungal agent (Nystatin). Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) stability tests were conducted to prove the mixture was chemically stable. Temperature elevation during guided surgery was compared to that of conventional drilling in bovine femur specimens. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test the method of the Four Faces of Orthognathic SurgeryRTM in regards to surgical accuracy and the ability to transfer this method to an academic setting. Methods: An experimental group consisted of 15 patients from a university setting and 17 patients from a private practice setting. Lateral cephalograms were taken immediately prior to the orthognathic procedure and post-operatively within six weeks. Appalachian has many social, economic, and biologic factors impacting dental health over the life-course.;Purpose: This study examined dental caries experience and family structure, dental fear, and fatalism in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.;Method: Using a cross-sectional study design, 2002-2009 Center for Oral Health Research in Appalachia data were analyzed utilizing the World Health Organization definitions for caries experience, dichotomized into low and high. Three groups were studied: 1) children, 11-13 years (N=237); 2) adolescents, 14-17 years (N=191); and 3) adults, 18 years and above (N=1125). The purpose of this study is to determine the existence and extent of ultrasonic scaling instrumentation instruction in dental hygiene programs nationally. Currently, there is no research available defining a consensus of instruction for ultrasonic instrumentation in dental hygiene programs. An email survey was sent to all directors of dental hygiene programs in the United States (n=323). The response rate was 45%. No significant differences in methods or extent of instruction were found between associate and baccalaureate degree granting programs. Eighty-nine percent of programs introduce hand scaling prior to ultrasonic scaling instrumentation instruction. Students in 96% of the programs are …

EDTA has long been the gold standard for smear layer removal in endodontics. Recently Ballal has suggested maleic acid as a more effective alternative to EDTA, but more research is needed before it can be used in clinical practice. This study focused on comparing EDTA to maleic acid when removing the smear layer from curved root canals in human posterior teeth. Objectives. To evaluate the short and long-term results of using a Modified Hyrax Expander with Protraction Facemask at an early age. Methods. Twenty three patients were treated with Dr. Kiebach's Modified Hyrax Expander and Protraction Facemask at an early age. Lateral Cephalograms were taken at three time points: pre-treatment (T1), post-treatment (T2), and 2 years post-treatment (T3) and evaluated using cephalometric analysis. Results. Statistically significant results were found for all three time points: T2-T1, T3-T2, and T3-T1. Results of evaluating chemotherapeutic effectiveness have focused on planktonic, two-dimensional bacterial existence. Biofilms exist as three-dimensional structures which shelter bacteria deep within. Current research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of various chemotherapeutics against bacteria residing inside of a biofilm. In order to do so, this study evaluated the effectiveness of four common chemotherapeutics (cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine gluconate, chlorine dioxide, and essential oils) against four bacteria (S. mutans, S. sobrinus, F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis) in both planktonic and biofilm modeled culture media.
