Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The determination of selenium(IV), arsenic(III), vanadium(V), and molybdenum(VI) at sub-nanomolar to picomolar levels has been investigated with square wave cathodic stripping voltammetry (SWCSV) and square wave adsorptive stripping voltammetry (SWAdSV). Se(IV) and As(III) form intermetallic compounds with copper and are deposited at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). V(V) and Mo(V) form dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) complexes which can be adsorbed at an HMDE. The reduction currents for the complexes are greatly enhanced by coupling a catalytic effect of bromate, and reaction mechanisms are reported. Generally, square wave voltammetry gives either better or similar sensitivity to linear scan and differential pulse voltammetry. …

Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski Jan 1996

Nucleation And Growth Of Gan On Sapphire By Mbe, Steven Buczkowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

GaN was grown by molecular beam epitaxy in an effort to determine nucleation and growth conditions which lead to high quality, single-crystal films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that growth under Ga-rich conditions promotes the nucleation of films with large nucleation domains leading to a lower density of intrinsic defects related to domain boundaries. These conditions are also shown to promote a 2-D growth mode resulting in films with a high degree of nucleation domain coalescence and surface roughnesses below 2 nm. Addition of atomic hydrogen, using a thermally-cracked source, is shown to increase the growth rate …

The Hydraulics Revolution: Science And Technical Design Of Urban Water Supply In The Enlightenment., Edward Howard Winant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In the later half of the eighteenth century, French engineer-scientists revolutionized hydraulics. Funded by Royal research programs, these experimenters formulated predictive equations for flow velocities and quantities. Their results were published throughout Europe and America, causing a distinct change in the practice of designing aqueducts. Case studies of aquaeducts for Edinburgh in 1721 and New York City in 1838 detail the changes in the practice of hydraulic design. A comparison of these two examples illustrates the practical effects of the new hydraulic formulas. These are presented in chronological order, along with the details of the French research programs which so …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In biology and medicine, free radicals are now of intense interest because they have been shown to be involved in many different aspects of metabolism, ranging from oxygen consumption and autocatalysis to xenobiotic metabolism. Formation of free radicals in various systems may contribute to diseases and degenerative processes. Free radicals attack guanine in DNA to give 8-substituted guanine derivatives including C-8-oxo-2{dollar}\\sp\\prime{dollar}-deoxyguanosine (oG) and C-8-aryl guanine derivatives via hydroxy and aryl radicals, respectively. The work to be described herein resulted from studies of both adducts in relation to carcinogenesis and other pathogenesis. This dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter I …

Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement In The Presence Of An Irrelevant Operandum., April Michele Williams Jan 1996

Response Acquisition With Delayed Reinforcement In The Presence Of An Irrelevant Operandum., April Michele Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Rats and pigeons responded under schedules of delayed reinforcement in three experiments. Two operanda were available but only one was correlated with reinforcement. In Experiment 1, either operandum could be correlated with reinforcement depending on which was pressed first. Due to this procedure the source of reinforcement varied irregularly between sessions. In Experiment 2, the operandum correlated with reinforcement was pre-determined and remained consistent within conditions. In Experiment 3, the source of reinforcement was pre-determined and varied semi-randomly. Responses were acquired without prior response shaping in the first two experiments and maintained in all three using unsignalled, resetting delays to …

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield Jan 1996

Narrating The Pathological, 1837-1848: Revolution And Social Discourse In Carlyle, Dickens, And Gaskell., Scott Aaron Dransfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Published during the years that mark the English working-class movement known as Chartism, Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution (1837), Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge (1841), and Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1848) all present a picture of social revolt. The scenes depicted in these narratives (all of which are based upon historical events--respectively, the French Revolution, the 1780 Gordon Riots in London, and the Chartist rebellion after the failure of the first petition in 1839) strongly suggest that the act of social revolt stems not so much from radical strategies of political action as from the proliferation of a set of dangerous "passions" …

Studies Of Renal And Biliary Clearance In Severe Kidney Dysfunction: Development Of A Rat Model Mimicking The Pharmacokinetics Of Ceftriaxone In Man., Qinying Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Ceftriaxone (CRO) is a third generation cephalosporin with a long half-life. The majority of patients with severe renal failure have slightly increased half-lives but a small subset of patients exhibit strikingly prolonged half-lives. The reduced ability of this minority of patients to eliminate CRO by biliary excretion will result in excessive drug accumulation. Therefore, the series of studies included in this dissertation were proposed to develop a renal failure model in rats, to examined the pharmacokinetics of CRO in this animal model, and to explore the biliary excretion mechanisms of CRO. Rats pretreated with uranyl nitrate exhibited a dramatic increase …
