A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace
A Palynological Study Of Two Upland Bogs In The Gulf Coastal Plain, Alabama And Mississippi, Linda C. Pace
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Fewer Quaternary palynological studies have been conducted in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States than In the northern United States and Canada, resulting in major gaps in the pollen record of this region. The existing studies display discrepancies in the chronology of the pine rise, appearance of the modem climatic regime and vegetation, and timing of the Hypsithermal. In order to fill a gap in the paleoecological data network of the Gulf Coastal Plain, pollen analysis, charcoal analysis, and sediment stratigraphic techniques were used to reconstruct the last 6500 years of Sweetbay Bog, Mississippi, and Minamac Bog, …
Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis
Of Rectangles And Centuries. A History Of The Use Of A Garden Pattern From Romanesque Europe To Nineteenth-Century New Orleans, David Dwayne Lewis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Settlers of New Orleans brought with them ideas of gardens that influenced the way they shaped gardens in the colony. Although the influence of those ideas has been acknowledged in studies of New Orleans gardens, specific connections between the ideas and gardens in New Orleans have not been made. To illuminate some of those connections, this study focuses on one garden pattern — a composition of long, rectangular planting beds -- that is common to at least fifty gardens in New Orleans and to European gardens dating from the ninth century. A developmental history that chronicles the use of the …

Nature, Culture And Big Old Trees: Human Relationships With Ceiba (Ceiba Pentandra) And Live Oak (Quercus Virginiana) In The Landscapes Of Guatemala And Louisiana., Katharine Anderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The ceiba in Guatemala and the live oak in Louisiana are examples of two trees that attain great size and age within the cultural landscape. Humans have adopted both as symbolic trees; they protect, encourage and even plant them. As the trees age, they become historic landmarks, are indicators of important places, and give character to the landscape. Although each tree is native within portions of each study area, both have taken advantage of human disturbance to expand beyond their original habitats. In addition, they have been moved deliberately by humans to new areas well beyond their geographical limits. Other …
Coastal Management Regarding Beach And Dune Protection: An Exploratory Analysis., Melissa Lee Gordon
Coastal Management Regarding Beach And Dune Protection: An Exploratory Analysis., Melissa Lee Gordon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The Congressional declaration of national coastal policy in Section 303 of the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) of 1972 charges the coastal states to meet the objective of coastal resource protection. At this time, when the appropriate mix of authority between federal and state governments concerning environmental regulations is in debate; it is important to determine whether the inter-governmental partnership created by CZMA is effective in protecting coastal resources. This research is an exploratory analysis of coastal management regarding beach and dune protection within the twenty-four coastal states. The dissertation objectives are as follows: (1) determine the level of …
Solid State Energy Barriers To Olefin Ligand Rotation Of Rhodium Compounds And Single Crystal X-Ray Structure Determination Of Synthetic And Natural Products., Yen-Hsiang Liu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) were derived from X-Ray diffraction data collected at two different temperatures (294K and 115K) from a single crystal of Rh(acac)(C$\rm\sb2H\sb4)\sb2.$ Since the thermal ellipsoids of atoms in the one crystallographically independent ethylene group displayed distinctive elongation normal to the C=C bond, a TLS rigid body analysis of the $\rm C\sb2H\sb4$ ligand rotation was undertaken. Using a locally modified version of Trueblood's THMA14 computer program, it was found that at 115K the root-mean-square amplitude of libration normal to the Rh-(CC centroid) axis is $7(4)\sp\circ,$ while at 294K it is $10(6)\sp\circ$ (estimated standard deviations in parentheses). The rotational …
