This project set out to find the best methods for use in a Guided Reading classroom as well as the results that would be produced from a year long use of guided reading in a first grade classroom. Guided Reading produces reading results in early and emergent readers as it provides structure and assessment practices for the teacher to instruct and guide students through the process of learning to read.

The purpose of this study was to investigate an alternative teaching strategy for assisting five first grade students who were struggling with learning how to read. This project examined how Mini Shared Reading, a melding of Shared Reading and Guided Reading, enabled these students to progress five to ten reading levels in five weeks.

This project begins by looking at kindergarten from a historical perspective. It reviews research relating to all-day kindergarten and half-day kindergarten programs. It demonstrates that increased instructional time is beneficial especially for those low-achieving or disadvantaged students.
