In this study, six precast, prestressed concrete girders were constructed and instrumented to measure prestress losses of bridge A7957 in Missouri. The concrete mixture for the bridge was designed with varying mechanical and rheological properties. High-strength concrete, high-strength self-consolidating concrete, and normal-strength self-consolidating concrete were used to construct the bridge girders. Vibrating wire strain gauges with integrated thermistors were embedded through the girders' cross sections to measure strains and temperatures. The measured short- and long-term prestress losses were compared with those obtained using different empirical models, specified in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and in the PCI Design Handbook: …

This paper investigates various retrofitting schemes for a prestressed concrete box beam using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets with the goal of increasing flexural strength. A simply-supported box beam is studied with a constant uniformly distributed load and three gradually increasing concentrated loads proportional to HS20 truck loading of the Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Various retrofitting schemes are considered each with single, double, and triple CFRP sheets, respectively, installed in high compression and tension regions. Cross-sectional nonlinear moment-curvature relations are developed and coupled with a finite-difference solution algorithm to predict load-deflection relations for both retrofitted …

HL-93, the current bridge traffic load model used in the United States, is examined here. Weigh-in-motion from 17 sites in 16 states, and containing 74 million truck records, is used to assess the level of consistency in the characteristic load effects implied by the HL-93 model. The load effects of bending moment and shear force are considered on single-lane and two-lane same-direction slab and girder bridges with a range of spans. It is found that the ratio of WIM-implied to HL-93 load effect varies considerably from one load effect to another. An alternative model is proposed which achieves improvements in …

The objective of this study is to develop an economical solution with metallic dampers for the seismic retrofit of highway bridges in low occurrence seismic zones, such as in the Central and Eastern United States. Select low carbon steel rods were first tested for their ductile behavior and material strength. Large-scale, tapered rods were then tested for their energy dissipation capability and fatigue strength under regular, irregular, and earthquake loads. A full-scale damper made of five tapered rods was designed next for the seismic retrofit of a three-span continuous steel-girder bridge in southeast Missouri; its system performance including joints and …

The occurrence of a strong earthquake in Indiana or neighboring states, as has occurred in the past, has serious implications for the State Transportation System with respect to adequate response. The definition of Earthquake Emergency Routes for the State of Indiana became a priority for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Lead-based paints are commonly used for painting steel bridge structures. Soils in the immediate vicinity of older bridges have been contaminated with Pb as a result of normal weathering and peeling of the paint coupled with removal prior to repainting. The objectives of this project were to assess the extent of lead contamination near highway bridges and to evaluate phytoremediation and immobilization as means of remediation. We examined soils in the vicinity of approximately 20 bridges in Indiana that had been repainted recently and were know to have been painted originally with Pb-based paint.
