The Impact Of Covid-19 On Student Motivation In Secondary Instrumental Music, Martha Jane Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to provide strategies to improve student motivation in band and orchestra programs in Elkhart Community Schools. The problem for band and orchestra teachers was declining enrollment and student participation in outside music activities such as audition opportunities since the COVID-19 pandemic. The rationale for this study was to examine student motivation and provide educators with immediately applicable strategies to improve student participation in instrumental music programs. Educators must understand why students continued to struggle with returning to normalcy by seeking strategies as to how to reach and help these students. Early research following the …

Student Enrollment And The Experiences Of Liberal Arts Faculty At A Historically Black College And University: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Sanford Derrick Dennis

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to understand how liberal arts faculty members at a small private historically black college are affected by unstable student enrollment. The institution is being affected by various states of unstable student enrollment, which naturally creates many challenges. The study utilized the hermeneutic phenomenological approach, and the cognitive appraisal theory as the theoretical framework. The cognitive appraisal theory is based on how individuals mentally process an event or a condition. In application to this study, liberal arts faculty members are in a challenging environment, and how do they mentally process it as an …

Making College Worth It: Inequalities In Higher Education And How To Solve Them, Katharine Meyer

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Most students who graduate from college go on to earn higher wages, have more employment stability, and enjoy better health. While posted tuitions are high, a “high price, high aid” approach to college pricing means that the average cost of college has actually declined in recent years. Yet, public confidence in higher education is at an all-time low. What explains this tension? Who gains from going to college and who does not? What can colleges do to change perceptions about the value of a college education? This lecture by Brookings Institution scholar Katharine Meyer highlights trends in college enrollment and …

Recruiting And Retaining Non-Traditional Secondary Music Students Through Modern Band, Luke Besong Oct 2023

Recruiting And Retaining Non-Traditional Secondary Music Students Through Modern Band, Luke Besong

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Despite the numerous research studies promoting popular music education, many school districts need to implement an ensemble that teaches popular music. On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To …

Objective: In this qualitative study, we explored why students in a free community college environment in Tennessee chose not to enroll in college or dropped out of college shortly after enrolling. Methods: We conducted 27 in-depth interviews with individuals who were eligible for the Tennessee Promise. Perna’s (2006) conceptual model for college access and choice guided our analysis. We analyzed data using a three-tier approach, which included open/emergent coding, followed by a priori/theoretical analysis. Results: We identified 15 emergent themes common among interview participants, which we then categorized into the four constructs of Perna’s model. Conclusions: …

The Impact Of External Stakeholders' Collaboration On International Student Enrollment In The College Of Career And Technical Education In A City In The North-Central United States: A Case Study, Jacques Kubranz Buhendwa

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This intrinsic case study aimed to understand how the external stakeholders' (ESs) collaboration impacts international students’ enrollment in the College of Career and Technical Education (CCTE) in the North Central United States. The stakeholder theory guided this qualitative case study, based on the philosophical assumption expressed in the ontological assumption taken from the social constructivism paradigm (Vygotsky, 1916). The central research question was: How do the collaboration of the external stakeholders of the college of career and technical education, the alums (international students), and their local community leaders impact new students’ enrollment? The objective was to understand this phenomenon and …

Building University Relationships: A Holistic Approach To Student Success In Online Learning Environments, Elizabeth Carson-Murphy Jan 2023

Building University Relationships: A Holistic Approach To Student Success In Online Learning Environments, Elizabeth Carson-Murphy

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Online learning in the higher education sector has grown exponentially over the past 15 years. Whereas online learning was once a viable alternative for the nontraditional adult student, enrollment trends now show an influx in traditional students opting for virtual education opportunities especially in the last three years during the COVID-19 pandemic. While there has been exponential growth in online learning, the rates of attrition have also significantly increased, making it difficult for institutions to retain their online students. This qualitative narrative inquiry study will explore the impact of authentic relationships on student success, engagement, and overall persistence in online …
