China-Based Industrial Espionage, Joel Savary Dec 2014

China-Based Industrial Espionage, Joel Savary

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

On Oct 8, 2014 China has surpassed the United States as the world’s largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)” (IMF). My paper explores one of the instances of unlawful business practices that have contributed to China’s new world position. China based espionage undercuts American businesses and U.S. foreign policy directly, causing catastrophic economic implications for America, its businesses, and its allies. The U.S. government is grappling with the means and methods China uses to disseminate information stolen from U.S. businesses to support China based industries. Due to the lack of transparency in China, it has been difficult …

The Creative Economy In Southern Illinois: Opportunities For Reshaping Carbondale And Siu, Kent Dolezal Oct 2014

The Creative Economy In Southern Illinois: Opportunities For Reshaping Carbondale And Siu, Kent Dolezal

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Since the 2002 release of Richard Florida’s seminal book, The Rise of the Creative Class, a considerable amount of the regional and local development discussion has focused on his concept of attracting and retaining the creative class as a vehicle of economic growth. Florida’s (2002) work centers on the premise that contemporary development is not a process of attracting large employers but attracting talented people to an area; it is a process of jobs following people, not people following jobs. Although Florida has a primarily urban focus (Peck, 2005), with more than 59 million or 19.3 percent of the American …

Exploring Economists & Society: Constructing Expert Identity, Joseph Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke Jul 2014

Exploring Economists & Society: Constructing Expert Identity, Joseph Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

The recent economic crisis has created a heightened interest in economics and greater demand for economics experts. The media has played an important role in meeting this demand as mediated expertise is relied upon to understand the complex relationships within society (Albaek, Christiansen and Togeby 2003; Beck 1992; Boyce 2006; Giddens 1990). Such interactions of experts with media are a key element of the knowledge flows within society (Sturdy et al. 2009) and so have attracted research attention (Ekstrom and Lundell 2011; Hutchby 2006; Montgomery 2008). This paper contributes to this literature by focusing on the under-researched area of the …

Revisiting Marketing As Constructive Engagement: Linking Policies And Managerial Practices, Clifford J. Shultz Jul 2014

Revisiting Marketing As Constructive Engagement: Linking Policies And Managerial Practices, Clifford J. Shultz

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Policies that initiate or support responsible micromarketing institutions and practices can be some of the most important catalysts to socioeconomic development and sustainable peace and prosperity, particularly in distressed or devastated political economies. Such polices and the accordant positive marketing forces might be considered a form of constructive engagement. The consideration of constructive engagement, including the idea that managerial marketing can be complementary to macromarketing, is gaining currency among some macromarketers, and is explored in this presentation. The author discusses some evolving successful cases from fieldwork in developing, devastated, transitioning and/or recovering economies.

Economic Analysis Of Greenhouse Lighting: Light Emitting Diodes Vs. Intensity Discharge Fixtures, Jacob A. Nelson, Bruce Bugbee Jun 2014

Economic Analysis Of Greenhouse Lighting: Light Emitting Diodes Vs. Intensity Discharge Fixtures, Jacob A. Nelson, Bruce Bugbee

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Lighting technologies for plant growth are improving rapidly, providing numerous options for supplemental lighting in greenhouses. Here we report the photosynthetic (400-700 nm) photon efficiency and photon distribution pattern of two double-ended HPS fixtures, five mogul-base HPS fixtures, ten LED fixtures, three ceramic metal halide fixtures, and two fluorescent fixtures. The two most efficient LED and the two most efficient double-ended HPS fixtures had nearly identical efficiencies at 1.66 to 1.70 micromoles per joule. These four fixtures represent a dramatic improvement over the 1.02 micromoles per joule efficiency of the mogul-base HPS fixtures that are in common use. The best …

The Church And Its Economic Involvement In Colonial Latin America, Michael A. Jensen Jan 2014

The Church And Its Economic Involvement In Colonial Latin America, Michael A. Jensen

Student Research

Because of the Church's prominence in colonial Latin American society, understanding the role of the Church in the economy of the times does not simply give insight into Church policies; it provides clarity, depth, and color to our understanding of the culture, society, and economy of the time. This paper begins by examining the part the Church as an institution played in the economy of colonial Latin America, and what effect that involvement had. Then, the discussion delves into a deeper assessment of what colonial Americans expected of the Church, what the Church expected of the people, and what happened …

Presidential Rhetoric And The Federal Reserve, C. Damien Arthur Jan 2014

Presidential Rhetoric And The Federal Reserve, C. Damien Arthur

Political Science Faculty Research

Presidents persistently use their rhetoric as a mechanism of influence over salient policies. As the economy has become more salient, presidents have tried to gain a semblance of control over its direction and robustness. Yet, there exists no substantial research regarding whether the rhetoric is influential with the most important economic actors such as the Federal Reserve. Assessing whether presidential cues and signals shape the Fed’s economic behavior provides an assessment of rhetoric’s effect. Utilizing the economic speeches from D.D. Eisenhower through B.H. Obama this paper questions whether the Fed’s behavior modeled what the presidents wanted. Presidents have increased their …
