Different from Transportation Network Companies and shared-car providers, social carpooling is personalized incentives-based and smartphone-enabled peer-to-peer ridesharing. Social carpooling emerges as a community-based strategy to reduce car ownership and mitigate congestion. It facilitates the transition from solo driving to effective carpooling by matching individuals’ travel demand in space and time. Personalized incentives, such as real-time information, travel feedback, and monetary incentives, are leveraged to spur the change. This project investigates the impact of social carpooling on users’ travel behavior and the system’s performance. The empirical data are supported by Metropia, which is a social carpooling platform enabling ride-match. Three research …

Most formulas analyzed in fuzzy mathematics assume -- explicitly or implicitly -- that the corresponding "and"-operation (t-norm) is the simplest minimum operation. In this paper, we analyze what happens if instead, we use other "and"-operations. It turns out that for such operations, a fuzzification of a mathematical theory naturally leads to a more complex mathematical setting: fuzzification of equivalence relation leads to metric, fuzzification of order leads to kinematic metric, and fuzzification of topology leads to area or volume.

For simplicity and to minimize variation, functional response experiments frequently use environments of simple physical structure and small size. Less attention is paid to similarity of the experimental environment to the natural environment where predation occurs. Assumptions about predator and prey use of space are often implied in the choice of experimental environment. We illustrate how these assumptions may affect conclusions with an experiment testing how arena size affects a functional response. Toxorhynchites rutilus preyed upon larval Culex restuans in containers differing in volume by 15x, but spanning a similar range of prey/liter. The most plausible Type II model included …

In this upper elementary mathematics education assignment, the prospective teachers gain hands-on experience in measuring distances in feet and inches, calculating areas, and converting distance and area measurements. Moreover, they solve a real-life situation by choosing the most economical tiles for their kitchen. This last part (3) of the assignment develops critical thinking and expressing one's thought processes. Part 3 can be used as an in-class discussion, which further promotes reasoning skills.

In this paper, we demonstrate how atypical visual representations of a triangle, square or a parallelogram may hinder students’ understanding of a median and altitude. We analyze responses and reasoning given by 16 preservice middle school teachers in a Geometry Connection class. Particularly, the data were garnered from three specific questions posed on a cumulative final exam, which focused on computing and comparing areas of parallelograms, and triangles represented by atypical images. A virtual world was created using the popular sandbox game Minecraft to support the development of preservice teachers’ knowledge for teaching mathematics. Preservice teachers explored the virtual world for a geometry activity involving area and volume problems. They then discussed how this integration of technology could support students’ effective learning of mathematics in a meaningful way. The findings of the study demonstrated that to a certain extent the Minecraft activity supported the transfer of knowledge from preservice teachers’ mathematics content knowledge to their mathematics pedagogical and instructional practice knowledge. In PNAS, McDermott et al. (1) analyze a 2014-2016 central Pacific fishing surge, focusing on the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) inside the Kiribati exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The authors incorrectly attribute the surge to the anticipated industrial fishing closure of PIPA and describe the phenomenon as a blue paradox (i.e., an unintended negative consequence of a conservation policy). However, a broader analysis demonstrates that this surge was unrelated to the closure of PIPA and was due to a strong El Ni~no event that created a fishing surge across multiple EEZs and high seas, not just PIPA (2).

Personality disorders have received limited recognition as a public health priority, despite the publication of treatment guidelines and reviews showing effective treatments are available. Inclusive approaches to understanding and servicing personality disorder are required that integrate different service providers. This viewpoint paper identifies pertinent issues surrounding early intervention, treatment needs, consumer and carer experiences, and the need for accurate and representative data collection in personality disorder as starting points in mental health care reform.

The effects of climate oscillations on spatial and temporal variations in wildland fire potential in the continental U.S. are examined from 1979 to 2015 using cyclostationary empirical orthogonal functions (CSEOFs). The CSEOF analysis isolates effects associated with the modulated annual cycle and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The results show that, in early summer, wildland fire potential is reduced in the southwest during El Nino but is increased in the northwest, with opposite trends for La Nina. Modern systems of official statistics require the estimation and publication of business statistics for disaggregated domains, for example, industry domains and geographical regions. Outlier robust methods have proven to be useful for small-area estimation. Recently proposed outlier robust model-based small-area methods assume, however, uncorrelated random effects. Spatial dependencies, resulting from similar industry domains or geographic regions, often occur. The impedance of electrodes at 1 kHz is typically reported to assess the signal-to-noise ratio of neural recording electrodes. The impedance response of platinum electrodes modified by poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene doped with dextran sulfate has been examined. The modified electrodes have lower impedance at low and intermediate frequencies compared to unmodified electrodes. The impedance and phase angle at low frequencies is strongly correlated with the electrode area. The geometric and linear diffusion charge densities of the modified electrodes are also dependent on the electrode area and impedance at low frequencies. Neural electrodes have been coated with electrodeposited poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene doped with chondroitin sulphate. Optical and electrochemical methods were used to determine the effective electrode area, charge injection capacity and charge density of the modified electrodes. Deposition times of 15 to 60 s slightly increased the geometric and steady state diffusion electroactive areas while the linear diffusion electroactive area grew significantly, indicating an increase in electrode roughness. The effective electrode area and charge injection capacity were significantly smaller than PEDOT doped with previously tested dopants. A simple procedure, which enables accurate measurement of transmission electron microscopy (TEM)/STEM probe currents using an energy loss spectrometer drift tube is described. The currents obtained are compared with those measured on the fluorescent screen to enable the losses due to secondary and backscattered electrons to be determined. The current values obtained from the drift tube allow the correction of fluorescent screen current densities to yield true current. Wireless body area networks (WBAN) emerge as one of the main research streams for future wireless communications. One of the candidates for the WBAN physical layer is multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) technology. However, despite its high data rate feature, it performs poorly in the very dispersive WBAN channel. To improve its performance, this paper proposes two novel mechanisms. Neural stimulation is used in the cochlear implant, bionic eye, and deep brain stimulation, which involves implantation of an array of electrodes into a patient's brain. The current passed through the electrodes is used to provide sensory queues or reduce symptoms associated with movement disorders and increasingly for psychological and pain therapies. Poor control of electrode properties can lead to suboptimal performance; however, there are currently no standard methods to assess them, including the electrode area and charge density.
