Fundamental Shifts In Research, Ethics And Peer Review In The Era Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Edward Barroga, Janet B. Matanguihan
Biology Educator Scholarship
The era of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to fundamental shifts in research, ethics, and peer review including reframing of the research design, adapting methodologies to the study type, transitioning of research mechanics, changing research methodologies, overcoming data collection and standardization constraints, upholding research standards and ethics, maintaining informativeness and social value, and providing guarded peer review flexibility. Indeed, the COVID-19 crisis, despite disrupting research worldwide to an unprecedented degree, has also become a catalyst to develop strategies of adaptation to this disruption. As the COVID-19 pandemic continuous to evolve, new, cost-effective, and highly flexible research models …

Translingual Practices In A ‘Monolingual’ Society: Discourses, Learners’ Subjectivities And Language Choices, Reiko Kato, Yuri Kumagai
East Asian Languages & Cultures: Faculty Publications
This study explores how Japanese EFL students engaged in translingual practices during a telecollaborative project that connected two college classrooms in the US and Japan. The project aimed at encouraging the students’ creative uses of languages, promoting an appreciation for their multiple linguistic resources, and nurturing their sense of ownership of languages informed by translingual practices. Contrary to our expectations, students in Japan exhibited great efforts to write in monolingual English and/or Japanese, which prompted us to investigate the reasons behind their language choices. Based on data analyses drawing on poststructural theory of subjectivities, we argue that the students’ language …
Skbi Big 5 Survey 2020 August, Singapore Management University
Skbi Big 5 Survey 2020 August, Singapore Management University
Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics
The COVID-19 pandemic led to whopping downward revisions to 2020 real GDP growth among the Big5 economies, on average greater than 7%-points (ranging from roughly 3.5%-points for China to more than 10%-points for India). The forecast revisions to headline inflation were less sizable and more uneven, perhaps because of the confluence of supply and demand influences. The 2021 median GDP forecast is expected to turn positive overall, with a balanced risk assessment for most of the Big5 (but a coin toss in IN and US), but the growth reversal is likely to be highly uneven. While China regains its prior …

How Other Countries Reopened Schools During The Pandemic – And What The Us Can Learn From Them, Robert W. Spires
How Other Countries Reopened Schools During The Pandemic – And What The Us Can Learn From Them, Robert W. Spires
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications
As American school officials debate when it will be safe for schoolchildren to return to classrooms, looking abroad may offer insights. Nearly every country in the world shuttered their schools early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have since sent students back to class, with varying degrees of success.
I am a scholar of comparative international education. For this article, I examined what happened in four countries where K-12 schools either stayed open throughout the pandemic or have resumed in-person instruction, using press reports, national COVID-19 data and academic studies.

Transgender Identity In Pre-Modern Japan, Sam Friedline
Transgender Identity In Pre-Modern Japan, Sam Friedline
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
This paper examines the documented history of transgender identity in pre-modern Japan. Through literary analysis of the Torikaebaya Monogatari and depictions of Kabuki actors and sex workers in woodblock prints, transgender individuals’s place in Japanese society is deconstructed, societal view of LGBTQIA+ individuals during these periods is interpreted, and where trasngender people were most prevalent in society is determined.
The Transnational Frontiers Of Japanese Education: Multiculturalism, Cosmopolitanism, And Global Isomorphism, Hiro Saito
The Transnational Frontiers Of Japanese Education: Multiculturalism, Cosmopolitanism, And Global Isomorphism, Hiro Saito
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The Japanese education system today faces three transnationally created challenges. The first is multiculturalism. Given an increasing number of students whose parents are either migrants or naturalized citizens, the government needs to rethink the nature of public schools, which have traditionally catered to ethnic majority students, and explore how to make them culturally more inclusive. The second is cosmopolitanism. Although cosmopolitanism is regarded as a desirable disposition and competency in a globalizing world, the government has difficulty incorporating it into the education system that continues to function as a central vehicle of nation-building. The third is global isomorphism. While world …

Japanese And Chinese Stock Market Behaviour In Comparison – An Analysis Of Dynamic Networks, Jan Hendrik Schuenemann, Natalia Ribberink, Natallia Katenka
Japanese And Chinese Stock Market Behaviour In Comparison – An Analysis Of Dynamic Networks, Jan Hendrik Schuenemann, Natalia Ribberink, Natallia Katenka
Computer Science and Statistics Faculty Publications
Driven by the advancement of technology, emergence of financial institutional bodies superseding geographical constraints, as well as cross-regional liberalization paired with the removal of restrictions, global stock markets tend to become increasingly interconnected. On the one hand, it is believed that the globalization has made stock markets more efficient and alleviated the inherent risk thereof, resulting from greater access to financial assets, and thus the possibility to diversify therein. On the other hand, this may, however, lead to increased stock price volatility and trading instability, due to the major stock markets being increasingly correlated. Increasing interconnectedness between companies leads to …

Covid-19 And Japanese Shareholder Activism: Brief Respite For Japan's Self-Healing Concrete, Toru Yoshikawa, Gavin Chua
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Extrapolating from modern international understanding of corporate Japan’s distinct form of managerial capitalism, we elaborate on the growing momentum of shareholder activism in Japan leading up to the COVID-19 health crisis, so as to inform the subsequent discussion on the relevant primary considerations that belie the future direction of shareholder activism in Japan post-COVID-19. On an initial logical extrapolation, it appears probable that COVID-19 could mark the peak of Japanese activism. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that the success of Japan’s managerial capitalism have also declined, which poses a question on to which direction Japanese corporate governance may be …
Contextualized Songwriting In The Japanese Church, Katie Ann Mcwilliams
Contextualized Songwriting In The Japanese Church, Katie Ann Mcwilliams
Masters Theses
The Christian Church of Japan has very few songs written in their own language and style. Most songs are translated from English or another language. While Japan is a very westernized country, this is a problem because things can get lost in translation and these songs are not always representative of their musical style. Furthermore, they have a unique voice of worship that is currently missing from the global Church. My research project was intended to identify songwriters and encourage songwriting for the local church with the intention of expanding the Japanese voice in the global context and raising awareness …
