Gaseous Carbon Emissions (Methane And Carbon Dioxide) From Wetland Soils In A Re-Created Everglades Landscape, Bradley R. Schonhoff Nov 2015

Gaseous Carbon Emissions (Methane And Carbon Dioxide) From Wetland Soils In A Re-Created Everglades Landscape, Bradley R. Schonhoff

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reducing the rates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is critical in combatting global climate change. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) are the two most important carbon-based GHGs, for their atmospheric warming potential. Wetlands such as the Florida Everglades play major roles in the global carbon cycle, as varying hydrologic conditions lead to differential production rates of these two GHGs. This study measured CO2 and CH4 emissions in a re-created Everglades ridge-and-slough wetland, where water levels were controlled to reflect natural flood patterns. As expected, lower elevations were flooded longer and produced more CH …

The Effect Of Bike Lanes On Congestion And Ridership In Boise, Stephen Gustafon, Brooke Jardine, Keegan Curry, Jacob Morris, Tyler Rahmann Apr 2015

The Effect Of Bike Lanes On Congestion And Ridership In Boise, Stephen Gustafon, Brooke Jardine, Keegan Curry, Jacob Morris, Tyler Rahmann

College of Business and Economics Presentations

This research project examines the effect of adding bike lanes in the downtown area of Boise and the impact it has on congestion as well as ridership. Cycling has become increasingly popular in major U.S metropolitan areas as an alternative form of transportation. The addition of bike lanes in downtown areas has been furiously debated in recent years. We will explore how bike lanes have affected congestion and ridership thus far in Boise, and in other regional cities of comparable size, Spokane, WA and Eugene, OR in hopes of determining the impact that the addition of bike lanes causes. Our …

The introduction of particulate and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) after-treatment controls on heavy-duty vehicles has spurred the need for fleet emissions data to monitor their reliability and effectiveness. The University of Denver has developed a new method for rapidly measuring heavy-duty vehicles for gaseous and particulate fuel specific emissions. The method was recently used to collect 3,088 measurements at a Port of Los Angeles location and a weigh station on I-5 in northern California. The weigh station NOx emissions for 2014 models are 73% lower than 2010 models (3.8 vs. 13.9 gNOx/kg of fuel) and …

Fungal spores as a prominent type of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAP) have been incorporated into the COSMO-ART (Consortium for Small-scale Modelling- Aerosols and Reactive Trace gases) regional atmospheric model. Two literature-based emission rates for fungal spores derived from fungal spore colony counts and chemical tracer measurements were used as a parameterization baseline for this study. A third, new emission parameterization for fluorescent biological aerosol particles (FBAP) was adapted to field measurements from four locations across Europe. FBAP concentrations can be regarded as a lower estimate of total PBAP concentrations. Size distributions of FBAP often show a distinct mode at …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Agricultural soils are the primary anthropogenic source of atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2OO), contributing to global warming and depletion of stratospheric ozone. Biochar addition has shown potential to lower soil N2OO emission, with the mechanisms remaining unclear. We incubated eucalypt biochar (550 °C) - 0, 1 and 5% (w/w) in Ferralsol at 3 water regimes (12, 39 and 54% WFPS) - in a soil column, following gamma irradiation. After N2OO was injected at the base of the soil column, in the 0% biochar control 100% of expected injected N2OO was released into headspace, declining to 67% in the 5% amendment. In …

A Newsvendor Approach To Compliance And Production Under Cap And Trade Emissions Regulation, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes Jan 2015

A Newsvendor Approach To Compliance And Production Under Cap And Trade Emissions Regulation, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the 1990s, governmental agencies have increasingly turned to market based cap and trade programs to control the emission of pollutants. Firms subject to cap and trade regulation are typically required to acquire emissions allowances via open auction markets. The cost to acquire allowances may impose a substantial financial burden on a firm. While emissions reduction efforts may eliminate some firm's need to acquire additional allowances, there are still numerous firms that need to purchase additional allowances on the open market. This study presents a new forward buying heuristic, designed for those firms that need to purchase emissions allowances via …

Reactive Nitrogen Species Emission Trends In Three Light-/Medium-Duty United States Fleets, Gary A. Bishop, Donald H. Stedman Jan 2015

Reactive Nitrogen Species Emission Trends In Three Light-/Medium-Duty United States Fleets, Gary A. Bishop, Donald H. Stedman

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

Repeated, fuel specific, emission measurements in Denver (2005/2013), Los Angeles (2008/2013) and Tulsa (2005/2013) provide long-term trends in on-road reactive nitrogen emissions from three light/medium duty U.S. fleets. Reductions in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions ranged from 21% in Denver (5.6 ± 1.3 to 4.4 ± 0.2 gNOx/kg of fuel) to 43% in Tulsa (4.4 ± 0.3 to 2.5 ± 0.1 gNOx/kg of fuel) since 2005 while decreases in fleet ammonia (NH3) emissions ranged from no change in Denver (0.45 ± 0.09 to 0.44 ± 0.02 gNH3/kg of fuel) since 2005 to …
