Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Viral Hollywood: How Social Media & Other Emerging Technologies Have Molded The Modern Moviegoing Landscape, Benjamin P. Conniff
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There’s no denying that the rise of the internet has brought about change in the Hollywood landscape. Fans now use social media, like Facebook and Twitter, to share word-of-mouth about movies both good and bad. In a sense, anyone can use these new “spreadable media” to be a critic. I myself took it one step further and started my own film review blog. I was even published in the College Heights Herald student newspaper for over a year! In gauging my audience’s tastes in social media usage and in film, I have uncovered the fact that the hot-button marketing issues …

Digital Cinema, Montage And Other Visualities, Shaun Huston
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Digital technology is enabling a reconceptualization of film and cinema. The pliability of digital media opens up, particularly, the theory and practice of montage to revision. This pliability allows for cheap and easy copying and combining of images, and, relatedly, the transition from film frame to digital screen provides a less precious and more flexible creative space for filmmakers. In this article, I use my documentary, Comic Book City, Portland, Oregon USA (2012), to demonstrate and discuss how digital production can be used to construct new forms of montage, particularly in the combination of creative norms and practices traditionally associated …

The Anchor, Volume 128.12: November 26, 2014, Hope College
The Anchor: 2014
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Manga History As A Manga Character: The Gekiga Movement's Role In Tatsumi Yoshihiro's A Drifting Life, Jon P. Holt
Manga History As A Manga Character: The Gekiga Movement's Role In Tatsumi Yoshihiro's A Drifting Life, Jon P. Holt
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Why is manga history so important in Tatsumi's manga biography? Is A Drifting Life an autobiography, or, is it a history of the Japanese comic books, particularly the "mature-audience" gekiga sub-genre? Both? Neither? How do the narratives of history and self intertwine? How should we read the gekiga (dramatic pictures) in this manga?
Creating Digital Comics In Response To Literature: Aesthetics, Aesthetic Transactions, And Meaning Making, Kelly Wissman, Sean Costello
Creating Digital Comics In Response To Literature: Aesthetics, Aesthetic Transactions, And Meaning Making, Kelly Wissman, Sean Costello
Literacy Teaching & Learning Faculty Scholarship
This article explores how eighth-grade students in a reading support class responded to the novel The Outsiders with the software program Comic Life. Rather than viewing this work from a new technologies or digital literacies perspective, we argue that unique insights can be gained by analyzing students’ digital compositions with lenses attuned to the arts, the aesthetic transaction, and student perspectives. In our presentation of four case studies, we are informed by two conceptualizations of aesthetics. First, we consider the aesthetic qualities of students' comics by analyzing the presence and impact of image selection, color choice, and overall design on …

Graphic Novels And Introduction To Library Research, Robert G. Weiner, Carrye Kay Syma
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Graphic Novels and Introduction to Library Research is an innovative project created by Associate Librarians Rob Weiner and Carrye Syma. For a one hour credit Library course on research, a graphic novel was created with the assistance of a member of the Libraries’ Communications and Marketing Department. This graphic novel is a complement to the power points previously created for instruction in the course. The novel presents information for various modules in the class, allowing students to experience learning in a fun and exciting manner.
The narrative for the graphic novel was written by Carrye Syma and illustrated by Kevin …

Overlapping Copyright And Trademark Protection: A Call For Concern And Action, Irene Calboli
Overlapping Copyright And Trademark Protection: A Call For Concern And Action, Irene Calboli
Faculty Scholarship
In this Article, I tackle a controversial topic-the overlapping trademark and copyright protection that can apply to creative works such as fictional characters, pictures, video clips, and songs. In particular, I highlight the possible negative consequences that granting trademark protection to these works-concurrently or after the expiration of copyright protection- can have on the societal bargain upon which copyright protection is built and justified. To date, scholars have only limitedly addressed these consequences, and more academic attention is needed in this area. In contrast, the advantages of trademark rights in creative works (in their entirety or in separated features of …

I’ll never forget the first moment, I truly realized who Batman was. No, I’m not talking about (SARCASTIC SPOILER ALERT) his alternate identity as Bruce Wayne, but instead his depth as a character, his uncompromising morals and never-ending cycle of battles with the Joker. Batman, his mythology, and his backstory encompass so much more than the movies; he is alive for me in a way he will never be on screen. From an early age, comics provided my escape; Batman was there to drop kick depression and side-swipe thoughts of suicide. [excerpt]

Distributed Media In The Age Of Eisenhower: Political Buttons, Rachel C. Loughran
Student Publications
This paper describes the purpose and effectiveness of distributed campaign materials in the context of President Dwight D Eisenhower's 1952 and 1956 elections. It analyzes campaign buttons and political cartoons distributed by the Eisenhower administration to determine how they furthered the image Eisenhower wished to convey during his campaigns. This image is presented by applying certain aesthetic qualities to the campaign materials.
