Learning To Teach Mathematics And To Analyze Teaching Effectiveness: Evidence From A Video- And Practice-Based Pre-Service Course, Rossella Santagata, Cathery Yeh
Education Faculty Articles and Research
Although emerging consensus exists that practice-based approaches to teacher preparation assist in closing the distance between university coursework and fieldwork experiences and in assuring that future teachers learn to implement innovative research-based instructional strategies, little empirical research has investigated teacher learning from this approach. This study examines the impact of a video- and practice-based course on prospective teachers’ mathematics classroom practices and analysis of their own teaching. Two groups of elementary prospective teachers participated in the study—one attended the course and one did not. Findings reveal that the course assisted participants in making student thinking visible and in pursuing it …

The Effects Of Standards-Based Grading On Student Performance In Algebra 2, Rachel Beth Rosales
The Effects Of Standards-Based Grading On Student Performance In Algebra 2, Rachel Beth Rosales
Dissertations
The use of standards-based grading in American public schools is increasing, offering students, parents, and teachers a new way of measuring and communicating about student achievement and performance. Parents indicate an appreciation for this method of grading, and students at the elementary grades (K-6) have improved standardized test scores in reading and math as a result of its implementation. This study seeks to determine whether standards-based grading has the same effect on students at the high school level (grades 9-12) by comparing end-of-course test scores and posttest scores of Algebra 2 students enrolled in a standards-based graded classroom with to …

Mathematics Interventions: A Correlational Study Of The Relationship Between Level Of Implementation Of The Accelerated Math Program And Student Achievement, Deborah Walker Driesel
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Current legislation, such as No Child Left Behind (2001) or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (2004), has increased accountability for schools for the education of all students. These laws require schools to provide interventions for struggling learners, as part of the Response to Intervention process (IDEA, 2004). Accelerated Math (AM), published by Renaissance Learning, is a scientifically based program designed to supplement quality instruction as part of the RtI process. This correlational study examined ex post facto data using pre and posttest scores on the STAR Math Test in relation to amount of classroom time dedicated to AM instruction …
The Kronecker-Weber Theorem: An Exposition, Amber Verser
The Kronecker-Weber Theorem: An Exposition, Amber Verser
Lawrence University Honors Projects
This paper is an investigation of the mathematics necessary to understand the Kronecker-Weber Theorem. Following an article by Greenberg, published in The American Mathematical Monthly in 1974, the presented proof does not use class field theory, as the most traditional treatments of the theorem do, but rather returns to more basic mathematics, like the original proofs of the theorem. This paper seeks to present the necessary mathematical background to understand the proof for a reader with a solid undergraduate background in abstract algebra. Its goal is to make what is usually an advanced topic in the study of algebraic number …

The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
The Hidden Stem Economy: The Surprising Diversity Of Jobs Requiring Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math Knowledge, Jonathan Rothwell
Brookings Scholar Lecture Series
Policy and businesses leaders have argued that there is a shortage of highly educated workers in professional occupations related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Critics have countered that Ph.D scientists often face a difficult academic labor market and do not necessarily earn higher wages than other professionals. Yet, both sides of the STEM debate have been relying on an ill-defined definition of STEM work. Using a detailed survey of worker knowledge requirements, this research project redefines STEM jobs based on the level of knowledge required in STEM fields to perform occupations. The results uncover two facts previously unrecognized …

The Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Society is an impressive achievement of collective effort and serious thought, an amazing collection of delightful, unexpected essays, a sourcebook for students and teachers alike. The experience of reading the EMS was, for this encyclopedia enthusiast, enlightening and enjoyable.
If any librarians out there are still wondering, let me be clear: I strongly recommend this encyclopedia. For individuals, the expense might well be an initial turn-off; keeping in mind that the hard copy books come with online access to the same content might alleviate some of the pain.

Measure For Measure : A Review Of Outcomes Of School Education In Australia, John Ainley, Eveline Gebhardt
Measure For Measure : A Review Of Outcomes Of School Education In Australia, John Ainley, Eveline Gebhardt
Assessment and Reporting
There have been a plethora of research reports providing information about the achievements of students in Australian schools and how those achievements differ among jurisdictions and among groups of students. However, each report has often been viewed in isolation from other similar studies. This report is intended to provide an integrated appraisal of the results of the international and national achievement surveys conducted since 1994 but with some references to earlier studies. In addition to limiting the task to manageable proportions, this time span corresponds to the widespread introduction of modern measurement methods so that there is a better basis …

The Discrimination Power Of Structural Superindices, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz
The Discrimination Power Of Structural Superindices, Matthias Dehmer, Abbe Mowshowitz
Publications and Research
In this paper, we evaluate the discrimination power of structural superindices. Superindices for graphs represent measures composed of other structural indices. In particular, we compare the discrimination power of the superindices with those of individual graph descriptors. In addition, we perform a statistical analysis to generalize our findings to large graphs.
Uniqueness Of Quantum States Compatible With Given Measurement Results, Jianxin Chen, Hillary Dawkins, Zhengfeng Ji, Nathaniel Johnston, David Kribs, Fred Shultz, Bei Zeng
Uniqueness Of Quantum States Compatible With Given Measurement Results, Jianxin Chen, Hillary Dawkins, Zhengfeng Ji, Nathaniel Johnston, David Kribs, Fred Shultz, Bei Zeng
Faculty Research and Scholarship
We discuss the uniqueness of quantum states compatible with given measurement results for a set of observables. For a given pure state, we consider two different types of uniqueness: (1) no other pure state is compatible with the same measurement results and (2) no other state, pure or mixed, is compatible with the same measurement results. For case (1), it was known that for a d-dimensional Hilbert space, there exists a set of 4d - 5 observables that uniquely determines any pure state. We show that for case (2), 5d - 7 observables suffice to uniquely determine any pure state. …

An Integrative Framework For Bayesian Variable Selection With Informative Priors For Identifying Genes And Pathways, Bin Peng, Dianwen Zhu, Bradley P. Ander, Xiaoshuai Zhang, Fuzhong Xue, Frank R. Sharp, Xiaowei Yang
Publications and Research
The discovery of genetic or genomic markers plays a central role in the development of personalized medicine. A notable challenge exists when dealing with the high dimensionality of the data sets, as thousands of genes or millions of genetic variants are collected on a relatively small number of subjects. Traditional gene-wise selection methods using univariate analyses face difficulty to incorporate correlational, structural, or functional structures amongst the molecular measures. For microarray gene expression data, we first summarize solutions in dealing with ‘large p, small n’ problems, and then propose an integrative Bayesian variable selection (iBVS) framework for simultaneously identifying causal …
Complete Positivity Of The Map From A Basis To Its Dual Basis, Vern I. Paulsen, Fred Shultz
Complete Positivity Of The Map From A Basis To Its Dual Basis, Vern I. Paulsen, Fred Shultz
Faculty Research and Scholarship
The dual of a matrix ordered space has a natural matrix ordering that makes the dual space matrix ordered as well. The purpose of these notes is to give a condition that describes when the linear map taking a basis of Mn to its dual basis is a complete order isomorphism. We exhibit “natural” orthonormal bases for Mn such that this map is an order isomorphism, but not a complete order isomorphism. Included among such bases is the Pauli basis. Our results generalize the Choi matrix by giving conditions under which the role of the standard basis {Eij} can be …
Orienteering In Knowledge Spaces: The Hyperbolic Geometry Of Wikipedia Mathematics, Gregory Leibon, Daniel N. Rockmore
Orienteering In Knowledge Spaces: The Hyperbolic Geometry Of Wikipedia Mathematics, Gregory Leibon, Daniel N. Rockmore
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this paper we show how the coupling of the notion of a network with directions with the adaptation of the four-point probe from materials testing gives rise to a natural geometry on such networks. This four-point probe geometry shares many of the properties of hyperbolic geometry wherein the network directions take the place of the sphere at infinity, enabling a navigation of the network in terms of pairs of directions: the geodesic through a pair of points is oriented from one direction to another direction, the pair of which are uniquely determined. We illustrate this in the interesting example …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of An Intervention Mathematics Class For Low Achieving Middle School Students In Northwest Georgia, Johnnie Coats
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
High-stakes testing has become crucial in public education, requiring students to meet increasingly higher standards, regardless of their ability levels. This causal-comparative study sought to determine the effectiveness of an intervention mathematics course in the middle school setting for at-risk, sixth grade students. The Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) math scores of 143 at-risk students enrolled in a remediation mathematics course were compared to scores from a control population of 143 at-risk students who did not participate in the class. Math scores from the 2008 administration of the CRCT test were used as covariates, and comparisons were made using …

Many job seekers in higher education are unaware of how large a discrepancy there can be in terms of financial potential for mathematics education jobs in higher education. Recent research on this topic has focused on the base salary (Reys, Reys, & Estapa, 2013), but other financial factors have been left unstudied. Through two cases, the researcher demonstrates a large gap that exists in net pay when major financial factors beyond base salary are considered, specifically insurance and retirement benefits. This article will spur conversations among faculty and graduate students in mathematics education doctoral programs allowing mentors to draw from …
